In his earlier books, Shadows in the Cave (1982) and Phenomenological Hermeneutics and the Study of Literature (1987), Mario Valdés laid the foundation for his phenomenological-hermeneutic approach to literary criticism. With this book he continues the development of his ideas, using his views of literature, cinema, and art to unravel what he calls 'the imaginative configuration of the world, the cultural phenomenon of making sense, poetic sense, of life.'The book takes the form of a collection of studies dealing with a variety of key issues in literary theory. A central theme is the role of the reader in assigning meaning to written works. Literature is understood in its capacity to make sense of certain basic aspects of human experience, including the quest for order in the universe, personal identity over time, a definition of the self with respect to the other, and a definition of the self as a member of a cultural community. Valdés begins each chapter with a synopsis of leading philosophical and literary-theoretical views on the subject at hand, then presenting and illustrating his own position through a detailed analysis of one or more literary works, primarily by Hispanic and Latin American authors.This meticulously constructed phenomenological-experiential approach to literature effectively intervenes in a number of major critical controversies. Valdés's project, begun with his earlier works and continued here, has been to rewrite literary history from a cross-cultural perspective mediated by educated readers.

This book is a unique contribution to scholarship of the poetics of Wallace Stevens, offering an analysis of the entire oeuvre of Stevens’s poetry using the philosophical framework of Martin Heidegger. Marking the first book-length engagement with a philosophical reading of Stevens, it uses Heidegger’s theories as a framework through which Stevens’s poetry can be read and shows how philosophy and literature can enter into a productive dialogue. It also makes a case for a Heideggerian reading of poetry, exploring his later philosophy with respect to his writing on art, language, and poetry. Taking Stevens’s repeated emphasis on the terms “being”, “consciousness”, “reality” and “truth” as its starting point, the book provides a new reading of Stevens with a philosopher who aligns poetic insight with a reconceptualization of the metaphysical significance of these concepts. It pursues the link between philosophy, American poetry as reflected through Stevens, and modernist poetics, looking from Stevens’s modernist techniques to broader European philosophical movements of the twentieth century. Ian Tan is an Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Education at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. His key areas of research are the intersections of literature, philosophy and film with special emphasis on literary theory, modernist poetry and contemporary fiction. He has published work on authors such as James Joyce, Wallace Stevens, Ian McEwan, John Banville and Graham Swift.

Testing the current skepticism that insists that it is impossible not to read one's own moment onto other times and cultures, the essays in this collection use the Victorian era as a means of developing a theory and critique of historical reclamation.In Knowing the Past, a distinguished group of Victorian scholars reflect on the Victorian past and examine the Victorians' own sophisticated contributions to debates about historical and cultural knowledge. Confronting, confirming, and opposing the skeptics, the essays provide close readings of particular texts. In this provocative and forcefully written book, Steven Mailloux takes issue with the validity of a number of distinctions commonly made in contemporary literary theory and cultural studies—distinctions between theory and history, reader and text, truth and ideology, aesthetics and politics.Mailloux first presents the case for a rhetorical hermeneutics and against foundationalist theories of interpretation. Doing hermeneutic theory, he argues, entails doing rhetorical history. By means of a detailed analysis of reader-response criticism, he highlights the connections between institutional politics and the interpretive rhetoric of academic literary criticism.Mailloux then uses Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as an exemplary text. Relating Mark Twain's rhetoric to the cultural politics of post-Reconstruction debates about racist ideology, he places his reader-oriented interpretation within the rhetorical history of controversies over the meaning and value of Huckleberry Finn. Finally, in a far-ranging study of cultural reception, he juxtaposes the twentieth-century concern about the topic of race in Huckleberry Finn with the nineteenth-century audience's very different concerns about juvenile delinquency and the "bad-boy boom." In the final part of the book, Mailloux restates his critique of foundationalist hermeneutics through readings of Ken Kesey, Michel Foucault, Edward Said, and Richard Rorty, and he concludes by examining the role of rhetoric and theory in a congressional dispute over the Reagan administration's reinterpretation of the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty.Rhetorical Power will be welcomed by readers in literary theory and American studies, as well as in such fields as speech communication, the sociology of culture, and social and intellectual history, and by others interested in the politics of persuasion.

This book is a unique contribution to scholarship of the poetics of Wallace Stevens, offering an analysis of the entire oeuvre of Stevens’s poetry using the philosophical framework of Martin Heidegger. Marking the first book-length engagement with a philosophical reading of Stevens, it uses Heidegger’s theories as a framework through which Stevens’s poetry can be read and shows how philosophy and literature can enter into a productive dialogue. This book analyses how the three books of visions by Hildegard of Bingen use the allegorical vision as a form of knowledge. It describes how the visionary’s use of allegory and allegorical exegesis is linked to theories of cognition, interpretation, and prophecy. It argues that the form of the allegorical vision is not just the product of a medieval symbolic mentality, but specific to Hildegard’s position and the major transformations taking place in the prescholastic intellectual milieu, such as the changing use of Scripture or the shift from traditional hermeneutics to cognitive language philosophy. The book shows that Hildegard uses traditional forms of knowledge – prophecy, the vision, monastic theology, allegorical hermeneutics – in startlingly innovative ways by combining them and by revising them for her own time. Dinah Wouters received her PhD in Latin literature from Ghent University, Belgium. She co-founded the research group RELICS and the open access journal JOLCEL, which promotes the study of Latin literature as a European literature. Her current project studies the impact of early modern Latin drama on a European scale.

Der Analyse der text- und zeichentheoretischen Prämissen des Interpretationsproblems, entfaltet als Problem der Beliebigkeit von Interpretationen, folgen Erörterungen zu verschiedenen Formen der Bedeutungszuweisung (Bezeichnung, Exemplifikation, Analogisierung) und zum Aufbau von Bedeutungskonzeptionen. Um zwischen zulässigen und unzulässigen Interpretationen angemessen unterscheiden zu können, bedarf es Kriterien des Vergleichs und der Bewertung von Interpretationen. Diese Kriterien lassen sich nur im Rahmen einer gewählten Bedeutungskonzeption festlegen, die auch die interpretationsrelevanten Kontexte selegiert und hierarchisiert. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird eine methodologische Lösung des hermeneutischen Zirkels entwickelt. Die Studie wendet sich an interpretationstheoretisch interessierte Leserinnen und Leser aller Disziplinen.

It pursues the link between philosophy, American poetry as reflected through Stevens, and modernist poetics, looking from Stevens’s modernist techniques to broader European philosophical movements of the twentieth century. Ian Tan is an Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Education at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. His key areas of research are the intersections of literature, philosophy and film with special emphasis on literary theory, modernist poetry and contemporary fiction. He has published work on authors such as James Joyce, Wallace Stevens, Ian McEwan, John Banville and Graham Swift.

Dies zeigt sich nicht nur in der Hermeneutik von Friedrich Schleiermacher bis zu Sigmund Freud, sondern vor allem in der Literatur der Moderne, so bei Friedrich Hölderlin und Paul Celan, aber auch bei Vladimir Nabokov und Thomas Pynchon. Der Raum zwischen Buchstabe und Geist erweist sich hier als ein Ort der Interaktion, an dem das Leben des Geistes nur zum Ausdruck kommt, wenn es den Buchstaben anerkennt und an seinem eigenen Leben partizipieren lässt.

Die hier versammelten Schriften von Salvatore Giammusso widmen sich der Auslegung und produktiven Aneignung der Anthropologie, wie sie von Wilhelm Dilthey und seiner Schule geltend gemacht wurde. Eine zentrale Rolle spielt dabei der Gedanke des Unergründlichen – vita abscondita –, da er erkenntnistheoretische und ethische Aspekte zusammenhält. Indem die Diltheysche Tradition die Idee der Unergründlichkeit betont, rückt sie in die Mitte der Erkenntnistheorie die Frage nach einem angemessenen Verstehen der individuellen, kreativen Phänomene menschlicher Lebensformen. Sie ersetzt die Daseinsontologie und den Transzendentalismus durch eine Hermeneutik, die die Lebenswelt als Textur von Bezügen und produktive Spannung zwischen Individualitäten und historischen Kontexten auslegt. Ein Philosophieren, das an die Idee des Lebens als ein unergründliches anknüpft, tritt entschieden für einen emanzipatorischen Demokratiebegriff sowie für eine Erziehung zur Urteilsfähigkeit im Dialog und öffentlichen Leben ein. Eine Haltung der integrativen Offenheit und Ehrfurcht vor dem Leben ist ihr ethischer Vorschlag, dem ein Verstehen der Natur entspricht, die wir immer schon sind.

For the first time this classic text forms the object of a focused, interdisciplinary approach. Scholars of philosophy and translation, working in English, French and German, provide a close reading of Schleiermacher’s lecture and combine their efforts in order to highlight the fundamental role translation plays in his hermeneutic thinking and the importance of hermeneutics for his theorisation of translation, within the historical and literary context of Romanticism. The various contributions revisit key concepts in Schleiermacher’s thought, in particular the famous metaphor of movement; examine the relation between his theoretical writings and his practice as translator of Plato, unearthing some of their philosophical and linguistic implications; discuss Schleiermacher’s reception in Germany and abroad; and assess the relevance of his ideas in the beginning of the 21st century as well as their potential to inspire further research in translation and interpreting

Benjamin research is often committed to the goal of obtaining the "whole Benjamin" or his "thinking in nuce". In contrast, Sven Schöpf discusses the 'entire book of tragedies'. The focus here is on the typographic design of the first edition of Walter Benjamin's legendary baroque book, published in 1928. In order to demonstrate its hermeneutic potential, the study reconstructs the history of printed text and the semantics of typography. In addition, against the background of the book art movement and the 'crisis of historicism', a groundbreaking look is taken at the style of literary-historical publications with an intellectual-historical provenance.
