Two ways of understanding the aesthetic organization of literary works have come down to us from the late 18th century and dominate discussions of European modernism today: the aesthetics of autonomy, associated with the self-sufficient work of art, and the aesthetics of fragmentation, practiced by the avant-gardes. In this revisionary study, Leonardo Lisi argues that these models rest on assumptions about the nature of truth and existence that cannot be treated as exhaustive of modernist form.Lisi traces an alternative aesthetics of dependency that provides a different formal structure, philosophical foundation, and historical condition for modernist texts. Taking Europe's Scandinavian periphery as his point of departure, Lisi examines how Søren Kierkegaard and Henrik Ibsen imagined a response to the changing conditions of modernity different from those at the European core, one that subsequently influenced Henry James, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Rainer Maria Rilke, and James Joyce.Combining close readings with a broader revision of the nature and genealogy of modernism, Marginal Modernity challenges what we understand by modernist aesthetics, their origins, and their implications for how we conceive of our relation to the modern world

While Ibsen's plays were seldom performed in Romania in the first half of the 20th century, historical sources highlight his strong impact on the national theatre practice. To address this contradiction, Gianina Druta approaches the reception of Ibsen in the Romanian theatre in the period 1894-1947, combining Digital Humanities and theatre historiography. This investigation of the European theatre culture and the way in which the foreign acting and staging traditions influenced the Romanian Ibsenites provides new insights into mechanisms of aesthetic transmission. Thus, this study presents a European theatre landscape whose unpredictability and uniqueness cannot be confined to essentialist interpretations.

Digital humanities has opened up new avenues for Ibsen scholarship, and recent developments within the field of e-research methodologies have formed a point of departure for questioning conventional assumptions. This book explores the early reception of Ibsen on the German stage from a quantitative angle using the performance database IbsenStage as a research tool. Visualization techniques are adopted as a means to prepare data for analysis and identify the major patterns in the production history, and data interrogation methodology is used to trigger new lines of enquiry. The study sheds new light on the greatest enigma of the early German reception of Ibsen: What caused A Dolls House, the play that eventually propelled Ibsen into global fame, to fail so blatantly on the German stage at the beginning of the 1880s, after the resounding success of Pillars of Society? Initially, Ibsen was treated as a commercial playwright. This changed in the late 1880s, when Ghosts was embraced by the avant-garde. At the same time, Ibsen was reintroduced as a commercially viable playwright, and it was only then that Ibsen began to have a lasting impact on the German stage.

Making mistakes is not only part of humans’ basic anthropological make-up and the driving force behind the philosophical search for truth, but it is also a significant element in literary framing and design, either as a necessary dramaturgical flaw (hamartia), as an event that causes surprise or as the initiator or accomplice of chance, fate, the subconscious and suppressed memories or thoughts etc. Literary depictions of errors, misjudgements and misconceptions can be found on various narrative levels, such as those of the characters and the narrator, in both a thematic and a structural respect and as a principle in poetics, that is, in the relationship between the (ironic) text and its readers. This collection of essays examines both the concept of ‘errors’ as an unforeseen deviation from what is expected and, in relation to that, the creative and productive potential in its literary framing and design. With contribution by Frederike Felcht, Henrike Fürstenberg, Hanna Eglinger, Joachim Grage, Dag Heede, Unni Langås, Patrick Ledderose, Stig Olsen, Clemens Räthel, Joachim Schiedermair, Antje Wischmann and Erik Zillen.

Eine kritische Geschichte der deutschen Rezeption skandinavischer Literatur von den Anfängen bis 1870 schließt den Band ab.Fiction and poetry, types of phantasy in literature, psychology and literature studies, literary imagology as well as stereotypes research - these analyses focus on the main issues of general literature studies in theoretical representations and reflections in selected analyses of world literary texts of Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish and Faroese literature. Therefore, Lutz Rühling analyses Henrik Ibsen's dramas, Selma Lagerlöf's novel The Wonderful Adventures of Nils, Edith Södergran's aphorisms and Jørgen Frantz Jacobsen's novel Barbara. A critical history of the German reception of Scandinavian literature from its beginnings to 1870 completes the volume.
