"The widespread view is that prayer is the center of religious existence and that understanding the meaning of prayer requires that we assume God is its sole destination. This book challenges this assumption and, through a phenomenological analysis of the meaning of prayer in modern Hebrew literature, shows that prayer does not depend at all on the addressee

"Demonstrating the pervasive presence of God in modern Hebrew literature, this book explores the qualities that twentieth century Hebrew writers attributed to the divine, and examines their functions against the simplistic dichotomy between religious and secular literature. The volume follows both chronological and thematic paths, offering a panoramic and multi-layered analysis of the various strategies in which modern Hebrew writers, from the turn of the 19th century through the 21st century pursued in their attempt to represent the divine in the face of metaphysical, theological and representational challenges. Modern Hebrew literature emerged during the nineteenth century as part of the Haskalah (Jewish Enlightenment) movement, which attempted to break from the traditional modes of Jewish intellectual and social life. The Hebrew literature that arose in this period embraced the rebellious nature of the Haskalah and is therefore commonly characterized as secular in nature, defying Orthodoxy and rejecting the old Hebrew God. Examining these radical changes in modern Jewish literature on the divine, this volume is a key text for scholars and students interested in modern Hebrew literature, religion, literature and Jewish studies"

"Hebrew literature sprang to life in late-nineteenth-century Russia, entering the "tehiyah" (revival) period in the life of Hebrew letters. The Yeshiva and the Rise of Modern Hebrew Literature examines the role of the Yeshiva (Orthodox Jewish seminary) in why and how did this happen at that time and place? Departing from the conventional interpretation of the origins of secular Hebrew literature, Marina Zilbergerts argues that the rise of Hebrew literature was grounded in the literary practices and metaphysics of the world of Talmud study in Eastern Europe from which its first writers had emerged. The Yeshiva and the Rise of Modern Hebrew Literature focuses on the early works and personal histories of five founding Hebrew writers who began publishing between 1862 and 1900, tracing the deep connections between their new secular writings and the scholarly milieu of Talmudic culture and the yeshiva in which they had all been reared. Zilbergerts reveals that even as these writers clashed with the rabbinical elites, they were inspired by the very Talmudic texts and ascetic ideals they so despised"--

"Hasidism, Haskalah, Zionism reveals how political and literary dialogues and conflicts between the Hebrew literature of the Hasidism, the Jewish Enlightenment, and Zionism interacted with each other in the nineteenth century. Author Hannan Hever uses post-colonial theories and theories of nationality to analyze how Jews used literature to tackle the "The Jewish Question," and set forth their own ideas and preferences regarding their status, control, and treatment as European Jews. In doing so, Hever theorizes the Enlightenment's intellectual aims and cultural influences, tracking how the models of integration crucial to Haskalah gave way to Jewish nationalism in the twentieth century. The readings in this book are theoretically informed, setting forward claims based on detailed textual analyses of Hasidic tales, Haskalah satires, and Zionist narratives. Thus, this book tackles a major interpretative problem visible at the core of modern Hebrew literature - its radical difficulty in distinguishing between the theological components of modern Jewish discourse and its national identity"--

This book challenges this assumption and, through a phenomenological analysis of the meaning of prayer in modern Hebrew literature, shows that prayer does not depend at all on the addressee-humans are praying beings. Prayer is, above all, the recognition that we are free to transcend the facts of our life and an expression of the hope that we can override the weight of our past and present circumstances
