    The fifth volume of “bricolage. Innsbrucker Zeitschrift für Europäische Ethnologie“ analyzes health and disease-related concepts and practices of different social groups from a socio-historical and cultural-scientific point of view. Instead of the terminology of the older “folk medicine research”, the authors orientate themselves on the concept of “medical culture(s)” as is the case in the identical research area “Cultural Encounters - Cultural Conflicts” of the University of Innsbruck. This association of humanities and social science subjects deals with different forms of cultural contact, whereby culture is understood as a dynamic system for the creation of meaning. So far, there is no anthology that does this with regard to specifically Austrian conditions and developments. The fifth volume of “bricolage” tries to fill this gap and would like to stimulate further discussion in this field of research in Austria.

    With soap, water, and diligence discusses attitudes and practices around cleanliness and health at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. At this time, scientific findings on how diseases spread had rendered both the body and the home as particularly risky in terms of the health of an individual. However, the zeal for cleaning was more than just a health issue – it also contributed to societal change at large. This book aims at deepening our understanding of cleanliness in relation to social class, gender, work, consumption, and space, viewed from a Nordic perspective. The battle against dirt was fought on a broad front, and on different levels of society. The book at hands offers glimpses of the long and complex societal process which was required for the Nordic societies to grow cleaner over time. Behind the gradually increasing interest in soap and lather lay challenges, negotiations, and disagreements about the ways in which cleanliness should be advanced, and who would be the ones advancing it. To establish the supremacy of soap required a lot of hard work. The ten chapters shed light on the interaction between debaters, voluntary associations, institutions, and individuals. How was cleanliness promoted and what was the reception like? Who and what was to be cleaned, and on which terms? What did cleanliness mean in different contexts and for different individuals? The book makes both ideals and practices visible by exploring the ways in which the gospel of cleanliness was presented, propagated, understood, questioned and renewed, and also by showing that in some cases people’s quest for cleanliness had motivations other than those intended by the promoters. The chapters have been written by economic historians, ethnologists, social historians, and historians of ideas from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. The book is intended for students, scholars and the general reading audience interested in a social historical perspective on cleanliness.

    By restoring the poet's image to view against the cultural background that branded it as monstrous, Deutsch recasts Pope's literary career as a form of monstrous embodiment--a stamping of his own image on fragments of the cultural past

    Like the miniatures of which Pope was so fond, the book is at once particular in its focus and wide-ranging in its conceptual scope. While drawing on recent feminist, historicist, and materialist criticism of Pope, as well as current theoretical work on the body, it also attends closely to the local ambiguities of the poet's texts and cultural milieu, details often lost to critical view. The result is a revitalized--and broadened--reading of Pope, and of our understanding of the processes of authorship. By focusing on the process by which ideas of authority and authenticity took shape at specific moments in Pope's career, Resemblance and Disgrace calls into question distinctions between theoretical abstractions and material details, between literary originality and critical derivation, following Pope's own example of rewriting intellectual boundaries as creative opportunities

Here is a wide-ranging and ably written exploration of this fascinating aspect of Victorian ideas. Bruce Haley looks at developments in personal and public health, and at theories about the relation between medical and psychological disorders. He examines influential conceptions of the healthy man: Carlyle's healthy hero, Spencer's biologically perfect man, Newman's gentleman-Christian, Kingsley's muscular Christian. He describes the development of sports and physical training in nineteenth-century England and their importance in schools and universities. He traces the concept of healthy body and healthy mind in boy's fiction (such as Torn Brown's School Days), self-help literature, and the widely read novels of George Eliot, Wilkie Collins, George Meredith, and Charles Kingsley. A Child of the Jago follows these contemporary discourses by bracketing together the neighborhood’s insalubrious state with the moral character of its residents. Yet many social investigators made a point of countering these common depictions of the Old Nichol’s inhabitants. This chapter explores how journalism and social investigation in the 1880s and 1890s attempted to influence the neighborhood’s reputation as physically and morally corrupt and infectious.

    In 1896, author Arthur Morrison gained notoriety for his bleak and violent A Child of the Jago, a slum novel that captured the desperate struggle to survive among London’s poorest. When a reviewer accused Morrison of exaggerating the depravity of the neighborhood on which the Jago was based, he incited the era’s most contentious public debate about the purpose of realism and the responsibilities of the novelist. In his self-defense and in his wider body of work, Morrison demonstrated not only his investments as a formal artist, but also his awareness of social questions. As the first critical essay collection on Arthur Morrison and the East End, this book assesses Morrison’s contributions to late-Victorian culture, especially discourses around English working-class life. Chapters evaluate Morrison in the context of Victorian criminality, child welfare, disability, housing, professionalism, and slum photography. Morrison’s works are also reexamined in the light of writings by Sir Walter Besant, Clementina Black, Charles Booth, Charles Dickens, George Gissing, and Margaret Harkness. This volume features an introduction and 11 chapters by preeminent and emerging scholars of the East End. They employ a variety of critical methodologies, drawing on their respective expertise in literature, history, art history, sociology, and geography. Anhand von 29 Filmen werden in diesem Buch die unterschiedlichen Facetten des Alters und Älterwerdens erzählt. "Das Alter" gehört nicht gerade zu den vordringlichsten Themen, betrachtet man die Filmlandschaft von Hollywood-Blockbustern bis hin zum europäischen Autorenkino. Fällt man erst mal aus der demografisch interessanten (und marketingrelevanten) Zielgruppe der 30- bis 49-Jährigen heraus, scheint es kaum mehr gute Kinofilme zu geben. Und trotzdem findet man bei näherem Hinsehen viele Filme, die sich genau mit diesem Thema befassen. This volume examines this connection from an interdisciplinary perspective, investigating the aesthetics of health narratives, performances of that narratively generate health, and the ideologies of a diverse range of "healing" narratives Während Krankheitserzählungen seit Jahrzehnten einen bedeutenden Analysegegenstand der erzähltheoretisch arbeitenden Disziplinen bilden, wurde die Verbindung von Gesundheit und Erzählen bisher nur selten untersucht. Der Band widmet sich solchen Gesundheitserzählungen in einem dezidiert interdisziplinären Zugang: Neben Beiträgen aus unterschiedlichen Literaturwissenschaften versammelt er Forschungsarbeiten aus den Bereichen der Psychologie, Psychotherapie, Ethnologie und Rechtswissenschaften. Die Ordnung der Beiträge folgt dabei einem Dreischritt: Fokussiert werden erstens die Semantiken und Ästhetiken von Gesundheitserzählungen, zweitens die Versuche einer performativen Herstellung von Gesundheit qua Erzählung und drittens die ideologischen Implikationen diverser ‚Heils‘-Erzählungen und versprechen.
