"Of the Presocratic thinkers traditionally credited with the foundation of Greek philosophy, Xenophanes, Parmenides and Empedocles are exceptional for writing in verse. This is the first book-length, literary critical study of their work. It locates the surviving fragments in their performative and wider cultural contexts, applying intertextual and intratextual analyses in order to reconstruct the significance and impact they conveyed for ancient audiences and readers. Building on insights from literary theory and the philosophy of literature, the book sheds new light on these authors' philosophical projects and enriches our appreciation of their works as literary artefacts. It also expands our knowledge of the genres in which they wrote, of the literary culture of the Western Greek world, and of the development of Greek poetics from the Archaic to the Classical Periods, exposing the influence of these thinkers on more famous Sophistic and Platonic ideas about literature"--

Maria van Erp Taalman Kip and S. R. Slings. This book deals with some (fragmentary) poems of Alcaeus, Archilochus, Hipponax and Stesichorus. The choice of the poems was determined by external factors: all of them are written on papyrus and were first published during the last few decades. After the first edition the fragments were discussed by many scholars, mainly in periodicals. The authors of this volume have assembled the results of this scholarly work and used it as a foundation for a carefully contituted text and an extensive overall commentary. In this way the poems will be more easily accessible than they were hitherto

Greek lyric poetry encompassed a wide range of types of poem, from elegy to iambos and dithyramb to epinician. It particularly flourished in the Archaic and Classical periods, and some of its practitioners, such as Sappho and Pindar, had significant cultural influence in subsequent centuries down to the present day. This Companion provides an accessible introduction to this fascinating and diverse body of poetry and its later reception. It takes account of the exciting new papyrus finds and new critical approaches which have greatly advanced our understanding of both the corpus itself and of the sociocultural contexts in which lyric pieces were produced, performed and transmitted. Each chapter is provided with a guide to further reading, and the volume includes a chronology, glossary and guide to editions and translations Introducing Greek lyric / Felix Budelmann -- Genre, occasion and performance / Chris Carey -- Greek lyric and the politics and sociologies of archaic and classical Greek -- Communities / Simon Hornblower -- Greek lyric and gender / Eva Stehle -- Greek lyric and the place of humans in the world / Mark Griffith -- Greek lyric and early Greek literary history / Barbara Graziosi and Johannes Haubold -- Language and pragmatics / Giovan Battista D'Alessio -- Metre and music / Luigi Battezzato -- Iambos / Chris Carey -- Elegy / Antonio Aloni -- Alcman, Stesichorus and Ibycus / Eveline Krummen -- Alcaeus and Sappho / Dimitrios Yatromanolakis -- Anacreon and the Anacreontea / Felix Budelmann -- Simonides, Pindar, and Bacchylides / Hayden Pelliccia -- Ancient Greek popular song / Dimitrios Yatromanolakis -- Timotheus the new musician / Eric Csapo and Peter Wilson -- Lyric in the Hellenistic period and beyond / Silvia Barbantani -- Lyric in Rome / Alessandro Barchiesi -- Greek lyric from the Renaissance to the eighteenth century / Pantelis Michelakis -- Sappho and Pindar : the nineteenth and twentieth centuries / Margaret -- Williamson

Despite their rich tradition, the Carmina Anacreontea transmitted in the Palatine Anthology have received little scholarly attention. This neglect is linked to questions concerning their authenticity. Long read as poems by the ancient lyricist Anacreon, they are now regarded instead as imitations of Anacreontic lyricism. This volume presents the latest findings on the language, poetology, tradition, and reception of this lyrical collection.

    Notes:

"Like love, Greek poetry was not for hereafter," writes Eva Stehle, "but shared in the present mirth and laughter of festival, ceremony, and party." Describing how men and women, young and adult, sang or recited in public settings, Stehle treats poetry as an occasion for the performer's self-presentation. She discusses a wide range of pre-Hellenistic poetry, including Sappho's, compares how men and women speak about themselves, and constructs an innovative approach to performance that illuminates gender ideology. After considering the audience and the function of different modes of performance--community, bardic, and closed groups--Stehle explores this poetry as gendered speech, which interacts with performers' bodily presence to create social identities for the speakers. Texts for female choral performers reveal how women in public spoke in order to disavow the power of their speech and their sexual power.

Male performers, however, could manipulate gender as an ideological system: they sometimes claimed female identity in addition to male, associated themselves with triumph over a defeated (mythical) female figure, or asserted their disconnection from women, thereby creating idealized social identities for themselves. A final chapter concentrates on the written poetry of Sappho, which borrows the communicative strategy of writing in order to create a fictional speaker distinct from the singer, a "Sappho" whom others could re-create in imagination.Originally published in 1996.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Main description: The series MythosEikonPoiesis begins with the publication of contributions to an international conference held at Castelen-Augst near Basle. The conference laid new foundations in examining the interdependence of myth, ritual and Greek literature in many different genres (Homeric epic, lyric poetry, Presocratic and Platonic philosophy, tragedy, comedy, satyr plays, historiography, Hellenistic poetry, and the novel) with regard to their textual structure and poetics. Working in interdisciplinary cooperation, some participants also direct their attention towards Egypt, the Near East, Rome, and to the reception of these poetological principles in modern literature

Gregory Nagy here provides a far-reaching assessment of the relationship between myth and ritual in ancient Greek society. Nagy illuminates in particular the forces of interaction and change that transformed the Indo-European linguistic and cultural heritage into distinctly Greek social institutions between the eighth and the fifth centuries B.C. Included in the volume are thirteen of Nagy's major essays—all extensively revised for book publication—on various aspects of the Hellenization of Indo-European poetics, myth and ritual, and social ideology. The primary aim of this book is to examine the Greek language as a reflection of society, with special attention to its function as a vehicle for transmitting mythology and poetics. Nagy's emphasis on the language of the Greeks, and on its comparison with the testimony of related Indo-European languages such as Latin, Indic, and Hittite, reflects his long-standing interest in Indo-European linguistics. The individual chapters examine the development of Hellenic poetics in the traditions of Homer and Hesiod; the Hellenization of Indo-European myths and rituals, including myths of the afterlife, rituals of fire, and symbols in the Greek lyric; and the Hellenization of Indo-European social ideology, with reference to such cultural institutions as the concept of the city-state.A path-breaking application of the principles of social anthropology, comparative mythology, historical linguistics, and oral poetry theory to the study of classics, Greek Mythology and Poetics will be an invaluable resource for classicists and other scholars of linguistics and literary theory
