    Que penser de l'ampleur des résurgences actuelles du Moyen Âge ? Pourquoi sont-elles souvent le fait d'œuvres expérimentales ? En explorant les domaines du récit littéraire, du théâtre et du cinéma, cet ouvrage analyse comment, tout en revendiquant le brouillage des références et la discontinuité de leurs emprunts, des œuvres de fiction contemporaines exaltent les caractéristiques majeures de la poétique médiévale : reprises par variation et combinaisons formelles, vibration de la voix et du corps, souffre d'une langue jeune, puissance inventive de la mémoire. Réunissant commentaires sur des œuvres et entretiens avec des écrivains d'aujourd'hui (Valère Novarina, Florence Delay, Jacques Roubaud), Passé présent nous fait comprendre la force des formes, leur rôle dans la création, et nous éclaire sur ce qui lie l'innovation à la tradition, les époques antérieures à l'invention artistique. Nous sommes ainsi invités à nous interroger sur ce qui, du Moyen Âge, nous importe ici et maintenant, et contribue à dessiner l'espace de notre « contemporain ».

    Le Graal entre en littérature avec Chrétien de Troyes à la fin du XIIe siècle. Il est adapté en allemand entre 1200 et 1210 par Wolfram von E'chenbach. Dans les deux cas, le Graal n'a rien de chrétien. C'est Robert de Boron qui vers 1200 est le premier à le christianiser. À partir de là vont se développer dans le monde germanique deux traditions, l'une « laïque » qui sera exploitée au profit d'idéologies du pouvoir, médiévale ou moderne, et l'autre « religieuse et chrétienne » qui est une glorification de la Passion du Christ. Une rupture s'opère ensuite avec Wagner qui confère au mythe un sens personnel, nouveau, avant qu'il ne soit utilisé, après la seconde guerre mondiale, pour illustrer la désillusion face au monde moderne.
