    Polemik in den Schriften Melchior Hoffmans. Inszenierungen rhetorischer Streitkultur in der Reformationszeit” is a study of pamphlets written as a reaction to, and attempt for, expansion of the Lutheran and Zwinglian Reformation. Melchior Hoffman’s work has, so far, almost solely been investigated by historians of religion and thus focused merely on religious topics and argumentation, and rather seldomly on the literary aspects of his pamphlets – such as rhetorics, argumentation strategies and text compilation. In order to close this gap of research on Melchior Hoffman and – in the sense of a New Historicism approach – give him as a non-canonical author more attention, this book focuses on the literary qualities of the texts. It is thus the first full-length study on Melchior Hoffman by a literary scholar. Not only has little been written on Melchior Hoffman, but also about lay writers in the Reformation at all. Thus, the book delivers new perspectives within the field of Reformation pamphlet writers. Theoretical significance is an integral part of the study, with a focus on developing a new theoretical concept for analyzing polemic texts. The innovative approach combines post-modern theories like (constructivist) Cultural Studies, and Performativity concepts with Communication Analyses and Classical Rhetorics. By doing so, it provides a unique approach to texts from the 16th century, which can easily and reasonably be applied to polemical texts of the 21st century as well as to even older texts than Hoffman’s.

    The book has been written in the research field of German Literature, but will be of great interest for both literary scholars and historians (of religion or culture). Als ‚radikaler Reformator‘ geriet Melchior Hoffman immer wieder in Konflikte mit Vertretern der lutherischen und zwinglischen Reformation. Die Auseinandersetzungen über die ‚wahre Lehre Gottes‘ schlugen sich dabei in unterschiedlichen Textsorten und formen nieder: Hoffman stritt in polemischen Einzelschriften, Schriftwechseln sowie einem Reformationsdialog und polemisierte sogar in Bibelkommentaren und Traktaten. Diese Schriften Hoffmans werden hier erstmals unter literaturwissenschaftlichen Gesichtspunkten behandelt. Sie werden als Orte der Performanz einer rhetorischen Streitkultur verstanden, die typisch für die Reformationszeit und generell für religiöse Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Theologie und Laienfrömmigkeit sind: In der schriftlichen Inszenierung des Streits manifestiert sich die komplexe kulturelle Wechselwirkung zwischen den rhetorischen Normen und Traditionen auf der einen und der individuellen Auseinandersetzung mit ihnen auf der anderen Seite. Das textuelle In-Szene-Setzen ist somit als performative Handlung zu verstehen, die Polemik selbst als deren grundlegendes inszenatorisches Prinzip.

    Kerstin Lundström untersucht Hoffmans Polemik mittels einer Kombination aus Rhetorikanalyse und modernen Methoden der Kommunikations- und Performativitätsanalyse. Das Ergebnis ist die Identifizierung unterschiedlicher Konstellationen der Rede, die maßgeblich mit der sprachlichen Ausgestaltung zusammenwirken. Der Fokus liegt insbesondere darauf, wie die einzelnen Bausteine von Hoffmans vielschichtiger Polemik – auf Text- und auf Kontextebene – ineinander greifen und ihre performative Wirkmächtigkeit entfalten.

    A reasonable evolution model is indispensable for the comprehensibility and justification of translation policy decisions. On the one hand, this model should take into account the general objectives of protecting a regional or minority language and, on the other, the findings of translation studies and the best practices of the translation industry. On the basis of these assumptions, the author derives possible lines of development for the various areas of translation policy with the help of the maturity model derived from organisational management. He also develops a comprehensive evaluation procedure: the Translation Policy Metrics Model (TPM). The exemplary implementation of this model is based on the example of the minority region of South Tyrol using two surveys, several personal interviews with leading personalities in the field of translation as well as by examining the existing sources of legislation. Peter Sandrini is a research assistant at the Institute for Translation Studies at the University of Innsbruck.     With a focus on the economic, social, and political impetus for producing monuments to knowledge, this volume recognizes the encyclopedic compilation as the quintessential tool of enlightenment knowledge transfer.

    From its modern origins in seventeenth-century France, encyclopedic compilations met the need for the dissemination of information in a more flexible format, one that eschewed the limits of previous centuries of erudition. The rise of vernacular languages dovetailed with the demand for information in every sector, sparking competition among nations to establish the encyclopedic “paper empires” that became symbols of power and potential. In this edited collection, Clorinda Donato and Hans-Jürgen Lüsebrink evaluate the long-overlooked phenomenon of knowledge creation and transfer that occurred in hundreds of translated encyclopedic compilations over the long eighteenth century.

    Analysing multiple instances of translated compilations, Translation and Transfer of Knowledge in Encyclopedic Compilations, 1680–1830 expands into the vast realm of the multilingual, encyclopedic compilation, the most tangible proof of the global enlightenment. Through the presentation of an extensive corpus of translated compilations, it argues that the true site of knowledge transfer resided in the transnational movement of ideas exemplified by these compendia. The encyclopedia came to represent the aspiring nation as a viable economic and political player on the world stage; the capability to tell knowledge through culture became the hallmark of a nation’s cultural capital, symbolic of its might and mapping the how, why, and where of the global eighteenth century.

    Landscape and social structure of the Lower Austrian / Styrian Wechsel-region: once turnstile of the Austro-Hungarian member-states, today centre of the European Union.

    For the first time a conscious differentiation between measures in triple metre (3/4) and duple metre (2/4) both with yodels and yodel-songs, thus showing its stylistic influence. This axiom has not ben applied as a musical standard in the academic approach of traditional music so far.

    The second volume on the Austrian excavations of the years 1975-1980 on the acropolis of Aigeira aims at a reconstruction of the post-palatial Mycenaean settlement, based on stratigraphy and findings. Spatial analyses were executed on the basis of distribution patterns of installations as well as small finds, pithoi and pottery in situ showing a settlement consisting of households based on family structures which are characterized by storage, production of goods and feasting. Furthermore, the social grade of the inhabitants is underlined by a cult room as well as a fortification evident for a late phase of the settlement.

    In Europe, the emergence of a modern professional theatre in

    many places became a focus of national self-esteem. The

    Commedia dell’arte, works by Shakespeare, Lope de Vega or

    Molière, became a weighty cultural capital. In German-speaking countries, however, corresponding cultural “achievements” are

    connected with the repression of the traditional theatre profession

    in accordance with the Enlightenment. To show what is being repressed in German theatre history is one aim of this edition. For example, the published plays are related to the Elizabethan Theater, the Amsterdam Schouwburg, the Jesuit Theater or Molière, thus revealing a German-language “international theatre” that was oriented towards the expectations of its audience.     in Verbindung. Zu zeigen, was in der deutschen Theatergeschichte verdrängt wird, ist ein Ziel dieser Edition. Die publizierten Spieltexte stehen beispielsweise mit dem

    Elisabethanischen Theater, der Amsterdamer Schouwburg, dem

    Jesuitentheater oder Molière in Verbindung, womit ein

    deutschsprachiges »Internationaltheater«, das sich an Bedürfnissen des Publikums orientierte, neu entdeckt wird.
