    Main description: Yvonne Wübben examines a tract on ghosts published in 1747 by the Enlightenment figure and aestheticist G.F. Meier from Halle. She reveals the topical conditions behind its creation, together with its function of bundlingknowledge. The study shows how aesthetics in Halle reacted to an empiricisation of knowledge. Reports of ghosts provide an opportunity to reflect on experience and to make a stand against the ›New Sciences‹ in the market-place of knowledge. Evidence of the patterns of reception developing here can be traced in literary authors (Goethe, Schiller)

    Main description: Yvonne Wübben untersucht einen Gespenstertraktat, der 1747 vom Halleschen Aufklärer und Ästhetiker G. F. Meier publiziert wurde. Sie macht dessen topische Entstehungsbedingungen sichtbar sowie seine Funktion, Wissen zu bündeln. Damit zeigt die Arbeit, dass die Hallesche Ästhetik auf die Empirisierung des Wissensreagiert. Gespensterberichte bilden den Anlass, um über Erfahrung zu reflektieren und sich auf dem Marktplatz des Wissens gegen die ›New Sciences‹ zu bewähren.     This text explores the popular yet troubling phenomenon of 'ghost tours,' frequently promoted and experienced at plantations, urban manor homes, and cemeteries throughout the South. As a staple of the tours, guides entertain paying customers by relying on stories of enslaved black spectres. Through an examination of popular sites and stories from select ghost tours, this book shows that haunted tales routinely appropriate and skew African American history to produce representations of slavery for commercial gain. 'Dark tourism' often highlights the most sensationalist and macabre aspects of slavery, from salacious sexual ties between white masters and black women slaves to the physical abuse and torture of black bodies, to the supposedly exotic nature of African spiritual practices.
