A critical exploration of James Benning’s films, the material environments they explore and the perceptual environments they createFor more than forty years, the experimental filmmaker James Benning has been engaged in a systematic investigation of the relations between man, landscape, and the filmic medium, and during the last decade it has become increasingly clear how much these investigations have to offer to contemporary debates about ecology, the age of the anthropocene and the potentialities of new digital technologies. In James Benning’s Environments a range of international scholars highlight the thematic and formal coherence of Benning’s practice, whilst providing readers with an artistic and historical context to understand his experimental film work. The volume offers a number of interpretative frameworks drawing on film theory, environmental humanities, visual culture and philosophy, explaining why Benning has emerged as one of today’s essential filmmakers.Key FeaturesContextualises Benning’s work in relation to the most important artistic and socio-historical influences on his filmmakingAnalyses Benning as an eco-filmmaker with perspectives from environmental studies and eco-cinemaOffers philosophical approaches to Benning’s films in view of their aesthetic, political and epistemological import

Examines how the films of Marguerite Duras create a multisensorial experience for spectatorsThe writer Marguerite Duras was a key figure in post-war French cinema, pioneering innovations such as the disjunction of film and image, and the primacy given to voices, silence and music. Her multisensorial approach opened up new spaces for the female experience to be expressed. Although she worked with some of the best French visual technicians and musicians of her time, critiques have often neglected the visual and sonic aesthetics of her films, and their effects on spectators. Drawing on theories of embodiment and spectatorship, this book analyses the tactility and multisensoriality of Duras’ films, and how they relate to her female-centred perspective.Key featuresExamines how the director's filmic innovations create a sensorial space for the female experience to be expressedBuilds on recent work on film as a multisensory mediumCovers Duras's entire film production, including short films and early adaptations

Examines how extreme cinema mobilises explicit content and highly embellished aesthetics to affect spectatorsExtreme Cinema examines the highly stylized treatment of sex and violence in post-millennial transnational cinema, where the governing convention is not the narrative but the spectacle. Using profound experiments in form and composition, including jarring editing, extreme close-ups, visual disorientation and sounds that straddle the boundary between non-diegetic and diegetic registers, this mode of cinema dwells instead on the exhibition of intense violence and an acute intimacy with the sexual body. Interrogating works such as Wetlands and A Serbian Film, as well as the sub-culture of YouTube 'reaction videos', Aaron Michael Kerner and Jonathan L. Knapp demonstrate the way content and form combine in extreme cinema to affectively manipulate the viewing body.Key featuresConsiders a wide scope of international approaches to extreme cinemaDraws together a diverse body of theoretical ideas to work towards a conceptualisation of the affective potential in the cinemaEngages critically with films that have received little scholarly attentionCases studies include Wetlands, A Serbian Film and Helter Skelter

A polycentric approach to the representation of slums in world cinemaNear to one billion people call slums their home, making it a reasonable claim to describe our world as a 'planet of slums.' But how has this hard and unyielding way of life been depicted on screen? How have filmmakers engaged historically and across the globe with the social conditions of what is often perceived as the world's most miserable habitats?Combining approaches from cultural, globalisation and film studies, Igor Krstic outlines a transnational history of films that either document or fictionalise the favelas, shantytowns, barrios poulares or chawls of our 'planet of slums', exploring the way accelerated urbanisation has intersected with an increasingly interconnected global film culture. From Jacob Riis' How The Other Half Lives (1890) to Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire (2008), the volume provides a number of close readings of films from different historical periods and regions to outline how contemporary film and media practices relate to their past predecessors, demonstrating the way various filmmakers, both north and south of the equator, have repeatedly grappled with, rejected or continuously modified documentary and realist modes to convey life in our 'planet of slums'.Read the introduction to Slums on Screen for free (pdf)Key FeaturesTraces the global flows of film culture through emphasising the transnational impact of important film movementsFocuses on two important 'cinematic megacities' (Rio de Janeiro and Mumbai) to outline how global film cultural currents become modified according to a specific local contextCombines approaches from cultural, globalisation and film studies to reconstruct world cinema's 'planet of slums'Adds a new perspective on cultural (world cinema) and social (cityward migration) globalisation processes

Examines the aesthetics, concepts and politics of chaotic and obscured moving imagesAudiovisual culture often privileges the instantly identifiable: the recognizable face, the well-timed stunt, the perfectly synchronized line of dialogue. Yet order and clarity do not come 'naturally' to the moving image. Light, motion, definition, compression: the conditions of recording, storing and screening can subject audiovisual media to countless variations, pulling them towards the indefinite and illegible. Filmmakers and artists often seek out and work with the resulting uncertainty, from the warping of space to the melding of senses, from glare to shadow and blur to glitch. This collection concerns itself with the aesthetics, concepts and politics of indefinite and obscured moving images, examining what is at stake in their foregrounding of materiality and mediation, evanescence and flux. Pursuing a range of approaches (spanning history, theory and close analysis), the authors in this volume investigate techniques, effects and themes that emerge from the wilful excavation of the moving image's formal and material base.ContributorsEmmanuelle André, Université Paris 7 DiderotJacques Aumont, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle - Paris 3Erika Balsom, King's College London Raymond Bellour, French National Center for Scientific ResearchMartine Beugnet, Université Paris 7 DiderotChrista Blümlinger, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle - Paris 3Allan Cameron, University of AucklandMichel Chion, Composer, Filmmaker and Essay WriterSean Cubitt, Goldsmiths, University of LondonCatherine Fowler, University of OtagoTom Gunning, University of ChicagoJulian Hanich, University of GroningenMartin Jay, University of California, BerkleyKim Knowles, Aberystwyth UniversityRichard Misek, University of KentGiusy Pisano, Ecole Nationale Supérieure Louis LumièreKriss Ravetto-Biagioli, University of California, DavisD. An interdisciplinary exploration of the enduring, and often fraught, cultural fascination surrounding British-American romanceThe first scholarly collection to consider the diverse ways in which US-UK romance, framed here through the lens of 'the special relationship', has been represented across key sites in a range of popular mediaLooks at both historical and contemporary case-studies drawn from across film, television, music, literature, news and politics from the last centuryConsiders pressing questions of identity and desire for subjects impacted by globalisation, cosmopolitanism, transnational relations and neoliberal political and economic policiesWinston Churchill famously described the political alliance between the US and UK as a 'special relationship', but throughout the cultural history of these two countries there have existed transatlantic 'special relationships' of another kind - affairs between British and American citizens who have fallen in love, with one another but often too with the idea(l) of that other place across the ocean. From romantic novelist Elinor Glyn in the 1920s to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle today, this collection examines some of the history, contemporary manifestations and enduring appeal of US-UK romance across popular culture. Looking at both historical and contemporary case-studies, drawn from across film, television, music, literature, news and politics, this is a timely intervention into the popular romantic discourse of US-UK relations, at a critical and transitional moment in the ongoing viability of the special relationship.ContributorsJay Bamber, independent scholar Caroline Bainbridge, University of Roehampton Barbara Jane Brickman, University of AlabamaWilliam Brown, University of RoehamptonShelley Cobb, University of Southampton Neil Ewen, University of WinchesterAlice Guilluy, London Film AcademyHannah Hamad, Cardiff UniversityDeborah Jermyn, University of RoehamptonVeera Mäkelä, University of HelsinkiInmaculada Pérez-Casal, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela Karen Randell, Nottingham Trent UniversityManuela Ruiz, University of ZaragozaMartha Shearer, King's College LondonFrances Smith, University of Sussex Theodore Louis Trost, University of AlabamaAlexis Weedon,

Examines the enduring significance of shoes to the cinema through a variety of theoretical approachesTraces the relationship between one particular object (shoes) and film as a medium in order to reveal the significance of material things to cinema, thematically, formally and philosophicallyReveals the political, cultural and economic power of film through its deployment of the iconography of shoesAsks if, and how, film uses" shoes differently from other art forms, and if so what this difference reveals about the medium, and about our current age of artOffers insights into debates around stardom; costume; gender; material objects and trauma; objects and the history of cinema; consumerism and advertisingIn his famous interpretation of Vincent Van Gogh's painting A Pair of Peasant's Shoes (1886), Heidegger argues that shoes tell us all we need to know about the world of the person who walks in them. In the case of Van Gogh's painting, we learn this not through a description of the pair of shoes, nor by a report on how to make shoes, but by looking at the shoes. Heidegger thus gestures towards the power of the visual arts to show us human truths through images of footwear and the feet they conceal or reveal, a power that finds its fullest expression in the cinema. From Chaplin's meal of boots (The Gold Rush, 1925), through Powell and Pressburger's Red Shoes (1948) and Dorothy's ruby slippers (The Wizard of Oz, 1939), to Julia Roberts' pvc thigh-highs (Pretty Woman, 1990), Marty McFly's power-lacing Nikes (Back to the Future, 1985) and the slim, spike-heeled stiletto that graces the poster for The Devil Wears Prada (2006), shoes are not only some of the cinema's most enduring icons; they also serve as characterisations, plot devices, soundtracks, metaphors and philosophical touchpoints. This book anaylses their significnace through a range of approaches drawn from the fields of Film Studies, Philosophy, Cultural History, Fashion, Cultural Studies and Politics.

Reassesses the post-revolutionary Iranian Cinema from a new mnemo-political perspectiveEstablishes a new framework of understanding the tensions between hegemonial and excluded aesthetics and rhetorics, between censorship and resistance, carving out resistant points of remembering within and outside state-controlled cinemaExposes silenced experiences and suppressed struggles that nevertheless articulate themselves in cinematic formsLooks for ruptures, frictions and sudden re-distributions within the trauma- and memoryscapes of Iranian CinemaIntroduces new readings of Iranian films and thus suggest a theory of trauma and memory inspired by cinematic procedures and orientated towards specific materialsFarīd ad-Dīn-e ʿAṭṭār's Persian folk tale The Conference of the Birds relates the quest by thousands of pilgrim birds for an ideal king, the mythical bird called Sīmorgh. At the end of the quest, the surviving birds recognise that the longed-for king is nothing other than the reflection of their own existence. But what about those other birds that were not able to become part of the final representation? This groundbreaking book calls them 'counter-memories'; memories that are barred from hegemonic history, but are, nevertheless present in cinematic forms. Due to the strategic and artistic interventions of a range of Iranian filmmakers, such as Abbas Kiarostami and Shahram Mokri, Ali Hatami and Tahmineh Milani, Kianoush Ayari and Rakshan Banietemad, the history of post-revolutionary Iranian Cinema is also structured by counter-memories, with the potential to destabilise officially fabricated success stories of revolution, war and sacred defence. Counter-Memories in Iranian Cinema establishes a new framework for understanding the tensions between censorship and resistance, helping to carve out resistant points of remembering both within and outside state-controlled cinema.

Investigates the intertwining of fiction, documentary and memory in filmAnalyses previously neglected visual material ranging from newsreels from the First World War to amateur footage of Hiroshima before the bombing and television news reports from the 1970sEstablishes connections between films and events which had never been brought together in the same monographThis book explores the ways in which film engages with historical events and their impact on present-day landscapes, through a spatial reading of film articulated through the process of charting both creative and coherent cinematic topographies. As the authority of the archive wrestles with the popularity of fictional narratives, this book delves into the debate on the relationship between fiction and documentary in hitherto neglected and surprising contexts. It offers the reader a unique approach to the study of archival footage and documentaries in relation to their fictional counterpart, mainstream films set in the same locations and addressing similar themes, including both live-action films and animations. From images of the places taken during or soon after the facts they represent to the intricacies of retrospective images of the events made years later, the films and footage investigated in this book offer a profound reflection on the ways in which we remember, imagine and experience the past through the complex mediation of film.

A comprehensive study of films made in a region of the world central to its future: The ArcticThe first book to address the vast diversity of Northern circumpolar cinemas from a transnational perspective, Films on Ice: Cinemas of the Arctic presents the region as one of great and previously overlooked cinematic diversity. With chapters on polar explorer films, silent cinema, documentaries, ethnographic and indigenous film, gender and ecology, as well as Hollywood and the USSR's uses and abuses of the Arctic, this book provides a groundbreaking account of Arctic cinemas from 1898 to the present. Challenging dominant notions of the region in popular and political culture, it demonstrates how moving images (cinema, television, video, and digital media) have been central to the very definition of the Arctic since the end of the nineteenth century. Bringing together an international array of European, Russian, Nordic, and North American scholars, Films on Ice radically alters stereotypical views of the Arctic region, and therefore of film history itself.'Gathering leading scholars across the three continents meeting in the Arctic, MacKenzie and Stenport open up the utopian, dystopian and heterotopian dimensions of Arctic film, a shimmering, crystalline view not only on the contest over the meanings of polar space, but onto the possibilities for reconceptualising world cinema.' - Sean Cubitt, Professor of Film and Television, Goldsmiths, University of London

Establishes the cultural and historical contexts for representations of female ageing in British film since the 1930sExamines issues around ageing femininities using a range of case studies of films and actresses, both known and forgottenEstablishes the case for the importance of the character actress at the heart of the history of British cinemaProvides an overlooked historical context for considering ageing femininities in contemporary filmActresses like Maggie Smith, Cicely Courtneidge and Sybil Thorndike have established the enduring appeal of the ageing actress in British film. Historicising and contextualising this archetypal figure, this book establishes a taxonomy of female ageing in British cinema, from the 1930s to the present day.Arguing that the prevalence of various iterations of the character actress is essential in understanding the nature of British cinema, specifically in how it has developed to define itself against Hollywood, employing archetypes which draw on well-established mythologies regarding ageing femininities. The book centres on the analysis of a broad range of films, such as Blithe Spirit (1945), The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1968) and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012), as well as the work of selected actresses, considering them within the context of the broader historical factors which impacted on ageing femininities, including the Second World War, the post-war settlement, the Welfare State, and the implications for the women's movement as a whole.

An international mix of emerging and established authors, with interdisciplinary expertise, explores how different ethical questions, political implications and aesthetic pleasures arise and shape one another in distinct visual media.Investigating themes such as the use of cinema as a medium for ethical and political thought, how documentary subjects both conceal and reveal truth, the new ethical challenges arising from interactive media and the role of images in responding to political events and trauma, this is a groundbreaking work about the interrelations of aesthetic, ethical and political values in visual media

Explores the relationship between cinema and the cities of Western ChinaBridges the gap where the cinematic landscape in China has long been dominated by developed metropolisesBreaks the cinematic stereotypes of the region characterised by rural and ethnographic images in films such as Yellow Earth (dir. Chen Kaige, 1984) and Old Well (dir. Wu Tianming, 1987) by adding the urban facets of western ChinaExplores four Han-dominated urban centres of western China (Chongqing, Chengdu, Xi'an and Lanzhou) represented in films investigating material spacesDiscusses class, gender, post-colonialism and the history of post-socialismExploring the stories, memories and experiences attached to places, Western China on Screen is the first monograph to explore the affinity between the cinema and cities of western China through a spatial perspective. Investigating how cinematic cities in western China appear as both spaces of national power and enclosed spaces of traditional cultural values, the book diversifies the glamourised image of the post-socialist, technocratic metropolises of Beijing and Shanghai, breaking the long-existing rural and ethnographical images of western China established by Chinese Fifth Generation directors. Through case studies of films such as Rainclouds Over Wushan (1996), Buddha Mountain (2010) and Weaving Girl (2010), the book establishes a new way of looking at western urban China on screen: from a space of production to a space of increasing consumption

Outlines an innovative agenda for understanding film’s interaction with other art formsOpens up new critical perspectives for understanding the role of intermediality in moving image creationBroadens the traditional horizon of film studies, challenging mono-medial conceptions of filmOffers a broad and inclusive view of cinematic intermediality, with a special emphasis on understudied avant-garde and experimental practiceAs a fundamentally hybrid medium, cinema has always been defined by its interactions with other art forms such as painting, sculpture, photography, performance and dance. Taking the in-between nature of the cinematic medium as its starting point, this collection of essays maps out new directions for understanding the richly diverse ways in which artists and filmmakers draw on and reconfigure the other arts in their creative practice. From pre-cinema to the digital era, from avant-garde to world cinema and from the projection room to the gallery space, the contributors critically explore what happens when ideas, forms and feelings migrate from one art form to another. Giving voice to both theorists and moving image practitioners, Cinematic Intermediality: Theory and Practice stimulates fresh thinking about how intermediality, as both a creative method and an interpretative paradigm, can be explored alongside probing questions of what cinema is, has been and can be

Explores the intermedial poetics of the post-communist cinemas of Eastern Europe and RussiaProvides in-depth and comparative analyses of films, with case studies covering fiction films, documentaries, avant-garde experiments, arthouse movies and mainstream cinemaCinematic case studies are drawn from Romania, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Bosnia and Herzegovina and RussiaDiscusses different strategies of intermediality and covers the analysis of a wide range of intermedial and inter-art phenomena, including the relationship between film and painting, film and sculpture, film and photography, cinema and the graphic novel, words and images and images and musicThis collection of essays explores intermediality as a new perspective in the interpretation of the cinemas that have emerged after the collapse of the former Eastern bloc. As an aesthetic based on a productive interaction of media and highlighting cinema’s relationship with the other arts, intermediality always implies a state of in-betweenness which is capable of registering tensions and ambivalences that go beyond the realm of media. The comparative analyses of films from Hungary, Romania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Russia demonstrate that intermediality can be employed in this way as a form of introspection dealing with complex issues of art and society. Appearing in a variety of sensuous or intellectual modes, intermediality can become an effective poetic strategy to communicate how the cultures of the region are caught in-between East and West, past and present, emotional turmoil and more detached self-awareness. The diverse theoretical approaches that unravel this in-betweenness contribute to the understanding of intermedial phenomena in contemporary cinema as a whole.ContributorsMelinda Blos-Jáni, Sapientia Hungarian University of TransylvaniaMalgorzata Bugaj, University of Stirling and the University of EdinburghFátima Chinita, Lisbon Polytechnic InstituteZsolt Gyenge, Moholy-Nagy University of Art and DesignHajnal Király, Eötvös Loránd UniversityBence Kránicz, Eötvös Loránd UniversityGabriel Laverdière, from Laval University, Quebec Ágnes Pethő, Sapientia Hungarian University of TransylvaniaJudit Pieldner, Sapientia Hungarian University of TransylvaniaKatalin Sándor, Babeș–Bolyai UniversityMareike Sera, Humboldt University of Berlin

Shows how aesthetic, ethical, and political questions intersect in a range of art forms as found in traditional mediaAddresses key aesthetic, ethical, and political questions in visual mediaExamines contemporary films, television, photography, painting and new visual media such as videogames, Facebook, and interactive documentariesOffers an international mix of emerging and senior authors with interdisciplinary expertiseThis book investigates the interrelations between aesthetics, ethics and politics in a variety of visual media forms, ranging across art installations, film and television, interactive documentaries, painting, photography, social media and videogames.
