    Abstract: Der Aufsatz behandelt - aufgrund Stuttgarter und Wiener Akten - eine "späte Fehde" in der Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts, den Konflikt zwischen einem in Lindach bei Schwäbisch Gmünd ansässigen Kleinadeligen Hans Diemar und der Reichsstadt Schwäbisch Gmünd, der auch vor dem Reichskammergericht ausgetragen wurde. Diemar hatte den Rückhalt der württembergischen Herzöge Ulrich und Christoph, die damals eine Einschüchterungspolitik gegenüber den benachbarten Reichsstädten betrieben. Der letzte Teil des Beitrags diskutiert das Konzept "Städtefeindschaft" für die Konfliktkonstellation Fürsten und Adel versus Städte. Die Fehdeherren (und ihre Gegenspieler in den Städten) waren beides: souverän handelnde Akteure und Gefangene ihrer Ängste und Feindbilder

Die Beiträgerinnen und Beiträger des Bandes zeichnen teils die Handlungslogik und die Erzählstrategien nach, die die Anwendung von Eigengewalt plausibilisierten, teils untersuchen sie die rechtliche und religiöse Delegitimierung von Eigengewalt. Dabei finden die Bemühungen der Theologen, fehdeförmliche Gewaltanwendung als Gefahr für das Seelenheil des Individuums, aber auch als Problem für die Sicherheit aller zu diskreditieren, besondere Beachtung. Da sowohl für die Begründung wie für die Ablehnung von Gewalthandeln Emotionen zum Argument gemacht wurden, leisten einzelne Untersuchungen auch einen Beitrag zur Geschichte der Emotionen. Autonomous use of violence — whether for vengeance or in a feud — can potentially endanger community safety. The contributors to this volume depict the logic and narrative strategies used to validate the autonomous use of violence on the one hand, and examine attempts to delegitimise such violence through legal and religions norms on the other. In doing so, they focus on the endeavours of theologians to discredit violence used in a feud as a danger to the salvation of an individual’s soul and as a threat to everyone’s safety. As emotions are often cited as an argument for both justifying and rejecting violent action, some of the studies in this anthology also contribute to the history of emotions.     The Forty-Seven Rōnin vendetta is one of the most famous incidents in Japanese history, but it is also one of the most misunderstood. John A. Tucker seeks to provide a credible account of the vendetta and its afterlife in history. He suggests that, when considered historically and holistically, the vendetta appears as a site of contested cultural ground, with conflicts, disagreements, and debates characterizing its three-century history far more than cultural unanimity about its values, virtues, and icons. Tucker narrates the incident as the historical event that it was, within the context of Tokugawa social, political, cultural, and spiritual history, before exploring the vendetta as conflicted cultural ground, generating a steady flow of essays, novels, plays, and ideologically driven expressions intrinsic to the course of Japanese history. Welchen Status besaß physische Gewalt für die verschiedenen Gruppen der mittelalterlichen Gesellschaft? Und wie imaginierte das Mittelalter selbst seine Gewalt? Eine Geschichte der Gewalt des Mittelalters lässt sich nicht einfach den Text- und Bilddokumenten entnehmen, denn diese folgen bestimmten Darstellungskonventionen. Ein adäquates Verständnis mittelalterlicher Gewaltpraxis setzt die Kenntnis jener Vorstellungen und Phantasmen voraus, die ihre Akteure - Fehdeherren, Kreuzfahrer, Geißler - zu Akten der Gewalt gegen sich und andere angetrieben haben. Im interdisziplinären Zusammenwirken von Archäologie, Geschichte, Kunstgeschichte, Ethnologie und Literaturwissenschaft unternimmt es das Buch, die Geschichte der mittelalterlichen Gewalt neu zu perspektivieren.
