    There has not been conducted much research in religious studies and (linguistic) anthropology analysing Protestant missionary linguistic translations. Contemporary Protestant missionary linguists employ grammars, dictionaries, literacy campaigns, and translations of the Bible (in particular the New Testament) in order to convert local cultures. The North American institutions SIL and Wycliffe Bible Translators (WBT) are one of the greatest scientific-evangelical missionary enterprises in the world. The ultimate objective is to translate the Bible to every language. The author has undertaken systematic research, employing comparative linguistic methodology and field interviews, for a history-of-ideas/religions and epistemologies explication of translated SIL missionary linguistic New Testaments and its premeditated impact upon religions, languages, sociopolitical institutions, and cultures. In addition to taking into account the history of missionary linguistics in America and theological principles of SIL/WBT, the author has examined the intended cultural transformative effects of Bible translations upon cognitive and linguistic systems. A theoretical analytic model of conversion and translation has been put forward for comparative research of religion, ideology, and knowledge systems

In Apocalyptic Geographies, Jerome Tharaud explores how white Protestant evangelicals used print and visual media to present the antebellum landscape as a "sacred space" of spiritual pilgrimage, and how devotional literature influenced secular society in important and surprising ways.Reading across genres and media—including religious tracts and landscape paintings, domestic fiction and missionary memoirs, slave narratives and moving panoramas—Apocalyptic Geographies illuminates intersections of popular culture, the physical spaces of an expanding and urbanizing nation, and the spiritual narratives that ordinary Americans used to orient their lives. Placing works of literature and visual art—from Thomas Cole’s The Oxbow to Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Henry David Thoreau’s Walden—into new contexts, Tharaud traces the rise of evangelical media, the controversy and backlash it engendered, and the role it played in shaping American modernity

    Long before evangelical Christians became known as a powerful political constituency, evangelicals were a profitable consumer constituency. In Evangelicals Incorporated Daniel Vaca argues that evangelical Christianity became a prominent form of religious life in the twentieth-century United States through commercial activity. To tell this story, Vaca focuses especially on the evangelical book industry, which not only has produced some of the bestselling titles in American history but also has inspired the world's largest secular media conglomerates to pursue evangelical markets. Drawing on corporate archives, personal letters, interviews, and more, [this work] explains how for-profit evangelical publishers and booksellers grew from modest roots to one of the most lucrative corners of the international book trade. By exploring areas of commercialism such as branding, retailing, marketing, and finance, Vaca illustrates how commercial media companies have cultivated and capitalized upon the expansive idea of evangelicalism since the end of the nineteenth century.

    Beginning with Watts's Horae Lyricae (1706) and concluding with the burgeoning poetic print culture of the early 19th century, Awakening Verse unfolds how evangelical ministers, itinerants, and laypeople in colonial British North America capaciously engaged prevailing ideas about literary taste and created a distinct transatlantic poetics grounded in Watts's notion of the "plainest capacity." Awakening Verse shows that regularly excluding so many years of verse impoverishes the understanding of early evangelicalism and American poetry. Taking revival poets and their verse as seriously as they and their contemporaries did provides an entirely new understanding of 18th-century evangelical and literary culture, one in which poetry serves as one of the primary actors in the creation, maintenance, and adaptation of evangelical culture and religious enthusiasm animates American poetics.
