This study examines constructions of the "Jew" in Baroque literature and investigates the historical development of modes of reference to Jewishness. Although by and large, the texts draw on anti-Semitic stereotypes, periodically a shift in attitude is visible when old narratives are deconstructed and new space opens up for neutral or even positive portrayals of Jewish figures

"In this fascinating study, preeminent historian Marc Fumaroli reveals how an imagined "republic" of ideas and interchange fostered the Italian Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and the French Revolution. He follows exchanges among Petrarch, Erasmus, Descartes, Montaigne, and others from the fifteenth through the eighteenth centuries, through revolutions in culture and society. Via revealing portraits and analysis, Fumaroli traces intellectual currents engaged with the core question of how to live a moral life--and argues that these men of letters provide an example of the exchange of knowledge and ideas that is worthy of emulation in our own time. Combining scholarship, wit, and reverence, this thought-provoking volume represents the culmination of a lifetime of scholarship"--

In my dissertation I explore the early seventeenth-century literary representations of the 1622 Janissary uprising against Sultan Osman II (1618-1622). The young Ottoman sultan lost his life during this rebellion, and news of his death caused a sensation both in the Ottoman Empire and in the West. It also inspired works of poetry, five of which are still preserved today.: The five Osmans. These include three tragic plays, one epic, and a rhymed chronicle. My dissertation presents a comparative investigation of these literary texts. More specifically, I have examined the distinction between the texts originating from the regions with little direct contact with the Ottoman world; those on the Ottoman border; and an Ottoman text itself. I have identified similar representation mechanisms of the contemporary historical events throughout these texts. I have found that ethnic/religious and political stereotyping are highly interrelated across the five Osmans. Osman II, and other protagonists of the rebellion, are construed in the texts through “double attribution”: as political figures on the one hand, and as the heads of the Ottoman Empire on the other. In general, certain political roles are criticized because of an association with ethnic and/or religious identities, while, at the same time, the reader could identify with other political roles within the same identities. To conclude, the contemporary literature about the Istanbul crisis of 1622 reveals a complicated attitude, rather than a clear-cut bias, toward the Ottoman power structures.

Our perception of the Others is based on our conception of ourselves. In theory the Others should be different. If necessary, we alter their images to accommodate the apperception of ourselves. Thus Chinesia, an amalgamation of facts and fiction, was created. In order to avoid previous repetition of stereotypes and prejudices, the present study re-examines the parameters which created Chinesia and traces its development to the end of the 18th century. It discusses the reports of the European seafarers and trade embassies to China and analyzes the situation of the Jesuit missionaries and their European publications on China. These helped to develop a wondrous China during Baroque and early Enlightenment which, however, gradually became offensive to Christian pride.- After Christian Wolff was dismissed from the University of Halle and banished from Prussia for eulogizing Confucianism, China was steadily downgraded, particularly by the historicists who were re-evaluating the position of Europe in World History. The white race was perceived as superior to all other races (David Hume and Kant); consequently, the complexion of the Chinese became increasingly yellower. It darkened from the Meerschaum hue (Lichtenberg) to the color of dried orange peels (Gobineau) toward the end of the 19th century. Finally, the Chinese were considered to be too stupid to have created the Chinese culture. The literary works of these periods reflect this development. The literary study begins with the analysis of European dramatization of the Manchu Conquest of China and its subsequent fictional Christianization. Then the Jesuit plays with Chinese themes are discussed, for the first time in literary history.- Also analyzed is the reception of the Chinese Orphan motive in European literature which was the turning point in downgrading China, and subsequently Montesquieu's impact on Albrecht von Haller's novel "Usong" is examined. Thereafter, the study scrutinizes the contradictory positions of Herder and von Seckendorff (or Goethe, for that matter) in Weimar. The book concludes with a concise analysis of the 'eschatological sinism' of Hegel, Marx and Weber to indicate the development of the later centuries

Classical German philosophy recognized in phantasia the fundamental intuitive power and Romanticism exalted it as the "absolute power" of poetry and art. But how was it conceived by artists and theorists in previous moments? To answer this question, Sigmund Méndez explores the vast European artistic literature of the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries, that is, the heterogeneous body of documents - ranging from the workshop manual to the extensive treatise or poetry - with which professional artists or connoisseurs tried to explain the modes of reproduction of reality and the generation of new forms in the visual arts. Analyzing texts from Cennini to Roger de Piles, passing through capital figures of the Renaissance such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Albert Dürer or Michelangelo and treatisers of Mannerism and Baroque as Lomazzo, Zuccaro, Van Mander or Pacheco, this research offers a both panoramic and detailed examination of a central concept of aesthetics in that golden and founding period for the creative unfolding and modern self-conception of art
