    By using history and theory of communication as an integrative methodological device, this book reaches out to those properties of totalitarian society which appear to be beyond the grasp of specific disciplines. Furthermore, this functional approach allows to extend the analysis of communicative practices commonly associated with fascist Italy, Nazi Germany and Soviet Union, to other locations (France, United States of America and Great Britain in the 1930s) or historical contexts (post-Soviet developments in Russia or Kyrgyzstan). This, in turn, leads to the revaluation of the very term »totalitarian«: no longer an ideological label or a stock attribute of historical narration, it gets a life of its own, defining a specific constellation of hierarchies, codes and networks within a given society.

Auch aristokratische Sammler legten Porträtsammlungen ihrer Ahnen und Zeitgenossen in Klebebänden oder Kassetten an, die mitunter an die 100.000 Einzelbildnisse umfassen konnten.Während sich etwa Prinz Eugen von Savoyen seine Sammlung von Kunsthändlern arrangieren ließ, verbrachten Kaiser Franz I. von Österreich oder Louis-Philippe I. von Frankreich viel Zeit damit, ihre Porträts selbst in eine ideale Ordnung zu überführen.Man begegnet Gliederungen nach Staaten, nach Berufsstand oder nach historischen Epochen – je nach dem Anspruch, den der Sammler an seine Kollektion stellte. Die Ordnungssystematik wurde so zum Medium fürstlicher Repräsentation.

    In 1624 the Dutch West India Company established the colony of Brazil. Only thirty years later, the Dutch Republic handed over the colony to Portugal, never to return to the South Atlantic. Because Dutch Brazil was the first sustained Protestant colony in Iberian America, the events there became major news in early modern Europe and shaped a lively print culture.In Amsterdam's Atlantic, historian Michiel van Groesen shows how the rise and tumultuous fall of Dutch Brazil marked the emergence of a "public Atlantic" centered around Holland's capital city. Amsterdam served as Europe's main hub for news from the Atlantic world, and breaking reports out of Brazil generated great excitement in the city, which reverberated throughout the continent. Initially, the flow of information was successfully managed by the directors of the West India Company. However, when Portuguese sugar planters revolted against the Dutch regime, and tales of corruption among leading administrators in Brazil emerged, they lost their hold on the media landscape, and reports traveled more freely. Fueled by the powerful local print media, popular discussions about Brazil became so bitter that the Amsterdam authorities ultimately withdrew their support for the colony.The self-inflicted demise of Dutch Brazil has been regarded as an anomaly during an otherwise remarkably liberal period in Dutch history, and consequently generations of historians have neglected its significance. Amsterdam's Atlantic puts Dutch Brazil back on the front pages and argues that the way the Amsterdam media constructed Atlantic events was a key element in the transformation of public opinion in Europe

    The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Britain saw the proposal of so many endeavors called "projects"—a catchphrase for the daring, sometimes dangerous practice of shaping the future—that Daniel Defoe dubbed his era a "Projecting Age." These ideas spanned a wide variety of scientific, technological, and intellectual interventions intended for the betterment of England. But for all the fanfare surrounding them, few such schemes actually materialized, leaving scores of defunct visions, from Defoe's own attempt to farm cats for perfume, to Mary Astell's proposal to charter a college for women, to countless ventures for improving land, streamlining government, and inventing new consumer goods. Taken together, these failed plans form a compelling alternative history of a Britain that might have been.The Wreckage of Intentions offers a comprehensive and critical account of projects, exploring the historical memory surrounding these concrete yet incomplete efforts to advance British society during a period defined by revolutions in finance and agriculture, the rise of experimental science, and the establishment of constitutional monarchy. Using methods of literary analysis, David Alff shows how projects began as written proposals, circulated as print objects, spurred physical undertakings, and provoked responses in the realms of poetry, fiction, and drama. Mapping this process discloses the ways in which eighteenth-century authors applied their faculties of imagination to achieve finite goals and, in so doing, devised new ways of seeing the world through its future potential. Approaching old projects through the language, landscapes, data, and personas they left behind, Alff contends this vision was, and remains, vital to the functions of statecraft, commerce, science, religion, and literature

    Coming upon the text of a document such as a charter or a letter inserted into the fabric of a medieval chronicle and "ed in full or at length, modern readers might well assume that the chronicler is simply doing what good historians have always done-that is, citing his source as evidence. Such documentary insertions are not ubiquitous in medieval historiography, however, and are in fact particularly characteristic of the history-writing produced by the Angevins in England and Northern France in the later twelfth century.In History and the Written Word, Henry Bainton puts these documentary gestures center stage in an attempt to understand what the chroniclers were doing historiographically, socially, and culturally when they transcribed a document into a work of history. Where earlier scholars who have looked at the phenomenon have explained this increased use of documents by considering the growing bureaucratic state and an increasing historiographical concern for documentary evidence, Bainton seeks to resituate these histories, together with their authors and users, within literate but sub-state networks of political power. Proposing a new category he designates "literate lordship" to describe the form of power with which documentary history-writing was especially concerned, he shows how important the vernacular was in recording the social lives of these literate lords and how they found it a particularly appropriate medium through which to record their roles in history.Drawing on the perspectives of modern and medieval narratology, medieval multilingualism, and cultural memory, History and the Written Word argues that members of an administrative elite demonstrated their mastery of the rules of literate political behavior by producing and consuming history-writing and its documents

    How did Milena Jesenská become a member of the resistance? This question is at the heart of Lucyna Darowska's investigation, which unlocks new perspectives in interpretive biographical research within politico-historical research into the resistance to National Socialism. Beginning with New Historicism, she critically engages with various theoretical approaches in an interdisciplinary fashion, in order to approach an understanding of the motivations behind acts of resistance. Using a methodological and theoretical basis that is fitted to the object of research, she develops interpretations of acts of resistance against the Nazi regime by the Prague journalist Milena Jesenská.Research on Milena Jesensk began late, since she was mainly known amongst Western European readers as the anonymous addressee of Franz Kafka's letters. As a critic of communism, in Czechoslovakia she was veiled in silence. The first international conference on Milena Jesensk, which took place in Prague from 20-21 October 2014, showed that the previous biographical works and the international discourse on Milena Jesensk has met with extraordinary interest, and that the intensification of the research on her is urgently required. At the center of this lies both her extensive oeuvre as well as various aspects of her biography. One of the most interesting questions in Milena Jesensk's biography, which transcends research into any one individual, is the question of her resistance. She can be identified at multiple points in her biography with a staunchly resistant position, against national socialism, and from 1936, against communism, which sets Jesensk apart from so many of her contemporaries. Last but not least, the methodological questions around biographical analysis are tightly knitted together with the motivations for the practice of resistance Wie ist Milena Jesenská zur Widerständlerin geworden? Diese Frage steht im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung von Lucyna Darowska, die neue Perspektiven interpretativer Biografieforschung innerhalb der politisch-historischen Widerstandsforschung zum Nationalsozialismus erschließt.     Die Gründungen der Weimarer Republik in Deutschland sowie der Ersten Republik in Österreich 1918 waren von kontroversen Auseinandersetzungen um Staat und Demokratie begleitet.     Perhaps unexpectedly, English travel writing during the long eighteenth century reveals a discourse of global civility. By bringing together representations of the then already familiar Ottoman Empire and the largely unknown South Pacific, Sascha Klement adopts a uniquely global perspective and demonstrates how cross-cultural encounters were framed by Enlightenment philosophy, global interconnections, and even-handed exchanges across cultural divides. In so doing, this book shows that both travel and travel-writing from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries were much more complex and multi-layered than reductive Eurocentric histories often suggest.

    Between 1839 and the end of the nineteenth century, millions of nude photographs of the female form—artistic, pornographic, and everything in-between—were produced in France, the birthplace of photography. Drawing upon government records, legal decisions, newspaper accounts, and contemporary literature, Raisa Rexer recounts the history of these illicit and ubiquitous images and elucidates their immense cultural and artistic reach.Rexer focuses in particular on the ways that nude photographic imagery influenced some of the greatest authors of the period, including Charles Baudelaire, the Goncourt brothers, and Émile Zola, and sets their work against historical records and nonfiction print sources to tell the story of evolving perceptions of nude photography. In the period immediately after photography's invention, nude photographs were vitally connected to the questions of art and artistry, particularly with regard to photography's aspirations to high cultural status. By the end of the century, however, as production and sales expanded internationally and as photographs of nudes flooded the streets and shops, proliferation of these pictures was increasingly viewed as one of a host of social problems plaguing France.Illustrated with nearly ninety period images, The Fallen Veil offers the first full treatment of the photographic nude in the nineteenth century and considers how this history continues to influence many of the same questions we ask today about art, pornography, and the relation between the two.

    Perhaps unexpectedly, English travel writing during the long eighteenth century reveals a discourse of global civility. By bringing together representations of the then already familiar Ottoman Empire and the largely unknown South Pacific, Sascha Klement adopts a uniquely global perspective and demonstrates how cross-cultural encounters were framed by Enlightenment philosophy, global interconnections, and even-handed exchanges across cultural divides. In so doing, this book shows that both travel and travel-writing from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries were much more complex and multi-layered than reductive Eurocentric histories often suggest.

    Mit den jugoslawischen Nachfolgekriegen beherrschten in den 1990ern Narrative von ewigem Hass und interethnischer Gewalt auf dem »Balkan« die westlichen Medien. Doch bereits Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts war dieser als imaginierter »europäischer Orient« in den geopolitischen und medialen Fokus angrenzender und weit(er) entfernter Länder gerückt. Wie wurden Bilder vom »Balkan« mit orientalisierten Vorstellungen angereichert oder davon abgegrenzt? Am Beispiel der Encounter Felix Kanitz und Edith Durham sowie der serbischen US-Migrationsgemeinschaft um Mihajlo Pupin beleuchtet Eva Tamara Asboth, wie Geschichtsbilder räumlich transferiert und übersetzt wurden. Sie zeigt: Die regionale Geschichte war und ist von zahlreichen Begegnungen, Widersprüchen und politischen Verwicklungen geprägt.

    Ist Schrift immer nur als Herrschaftsinstrument zu betrachten, so wie es Schriftwissenschaft, Ethnologie und Universalgeschichte behaupten? Vom antiken Scherbengericht bis zur Samisdat-Presse konnte Schrift auch der Bestreitung oder Einhegung der Herrschaft dienen. Während Herrschenden-Apotheosen Maßstäbe setzen, an denen real Herrschende scheitern können, zeigen uns Chroniken, wie umkämpft jede Macht ist. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes zeigen, dass es bei der Instrumentalisierung von Schrift auf die Trägergruppen der Schriftlichkeit, auf Genres und die kulturelle Einbettung ankommt. Anhand von Beispielen, die von der Antike bis in die Zeitgeschichte reichen, beleuchten sie das prekäre Verhältnis zwischen Literalität und Macht.
