Die vorliegende Studie geht erstmals der Frage nach, wie Stille, Schweigen, Sprachlosigkeit und Verweigerung der Kommunikation im römischen Epos eingesetzt werden. This is the first study to look at the question of how quiet, silence, speechlessness and the refusal to communicate are employed in Roman epic. Vom doppelten »Roman de la Rose« des Guillaume de Lorris/Jean de Meun über die »Clef d'Amors« und den »Dit de la Panthère d'Amours« bis zum »Livre du Voir-Dit« des Guillaume de Machaut wird ein Zeitraum umschrieben, der in den Literaturgeschichten keine "Epoche" bildet. Als Zwischen-Zeit markiert er den Übergang von einem noch feudal-höfisch verpflichteten Kulturideal zu einer durch Bildung und Erfahrung erarbeiteten Kulturpraxis. Es wird der Wechsel nachgezeichnet von einer aus Autoritäten entworfenen Wahrheit zu einer durch Schrift-Begehren autorisierten Suche nach Selbstfindung

    Main description: Tracing in-scriptions of subjectivity in texts from 13th and 14th century France necessarily implies inquiring into the process of subjectification they reflect. From the "Roman de la Rose" in the versions by Guillaume de Loris and Jean de Meun to Guillaume de Machaut's "Livre du Voir-Dit" by way of the "Clefs d'Amors" and the "Dit de la Panthère d'Amours", the works studied here circumscribe a period not normally counted as an 'epoch' by literary historians. It is an interim period marking the transition from an attitude sub-scribing to a feudal/courtly ideal of culture to a practice of culture as the fruit of education and experience.     In this study Professor Dorfman applies the methods of modern linguistics to literary analysis. Literature may be described as the structured use of language: the modern linguistic analyzes language in a search for the minimal units of sound and form, phoneme and morpheme, and determines the combinations by which they can communicate meaning. The author here searches for a minimal structural unit in the literary narrative analogous to the phoneme and the morpheme in language structure. Based on a detailed analysis of the Roland and the Cid and twelve additional Romance narratives, Professor Dorfman's argument is that the structure of the medieval Romance epics may be analyzed into functional units which he calls "narremes." He divides a narrative into two types of structure: the superstructure and the substructure. A narrative, by definition, is a series of incidents. All the incidents in the narrative, taken as written, form the superstructure. Analysis, however, shows that many of the incidents may be abstracted from the narrative without deflecting the story-line. On the other hand, other incidents reveal themselves as organically linked with each other, so they cannot be omitted, without destroying the story-line. These selected incidents are the narremes, which make up the substructure of the narrative. This method of analysis produces so interesting and surprising results, results which make an important advance in research in linguistics and Romance literature. Eugene Dorfman, as an orthodox structuralist, has focused strictly on the formal descriptions of the narratives; but his analysis leads into the great traditional problems of literary history, and in particular poses anew the problem of the origins of the epic

    Barbara Pavlock here illuminates the significance of the erotic in the epic tradition from Alexandrian Greece to the late Renaissance by examining the transformations of two Homeric episodes, Odysseus' encounter with Nausikaa and the night-raid of Odysseus and Diomedes. In close readings of epics by Apollonius of Rhodes, Virgil, Ovid, Catullus, Ariosto, and Milton, Pavlock shows how these poets maintain the appearance of thematic continuity as they actually differentiate their own views on heroic values from those of their predecessors. Asserting that the erotic serves in the epic as a locus of criticism of social values, she traces adaptations in rhetorical devices, in larger structural patterns, and in major generic forms, as in the combination of tragic with epic models
