    Zeitliche und regionale Entwicklungen ebenso wie offensichtliche Präferenzen von antiken Verfassern und Auftraggebern prägen die enorme Vielfalt der Carmina Latina Epigraphica. In der römischen Republik und Kaiserzeit dominieren Grabinschriften in Versmaß, seit der Spätantike werden offensichtlich auch andere Textgruppen zunehmend attraktiver. In Republik und Spätantike waren solche eingeschriebenen Gedichte mit oder ohne Prosa-Rahmung eher ein Elitenphänomen, wohingegen die Epigramme in der Kaiserzeit eine populäre Textgruppe für breite Bevölkerungsschichten waren. Im Band werden verschiedene Aspekte von Text-Entwicklungen durch die Jahrhunderte ebenso untersucht wie regionale Veränderungen und Wechselwirkungen von Texten und ihren Objektträgern. Oft genug lassen sich aber einzelne dieser Gedichte der Einordnung in vermeintlich regionale und zeitlich vorherrschende ‚epigraphic habits‘ nicht einordnen. Auch für solch singuläre, sehr individuell gestaltete Inschriften werden mögliche Kontextualisierung aufgezeigt, vor allem durch Verbindungen zu anderen Textgattungen und Traditionen. Mit diesem Band wird daher das die Editionen und Analysen zumeist dominierende regionale Prinzip für die Carmina Latina Epigraphica auf die Probe gestellt

    1899 legte Heinrich Dressel mit Band CIL XV 2, 1 die bis heute verbindliche Grundlage für das Verständnis römischer Amphoren vor. Die zum Seetransport verschiedenster Lebensmittel genutzten Behälter wurden rund um das Mittelmeer hergestellt. Dressel gelang mit seiner Studie von Amphoren vom Monte Testaccio sowie aus Grabungen bei den hortia Torlonia und den castra praetoria in Rom die maßgebliche Definition ihrer Formen, Inhalte und Provenienzen. 150 Jahre nach Dressels Arbeiten stellt sich angesichts einer prosperierenden internationalen Amphorenforschung die Frage, ob sich in seinen Untersuchungen noch Neues entdecken lässt. Ausgangspunkt ist ein Nachruf auf Dressel, der ihm – bisher in der Forschung nicht beachtet – eine besondere Methode der Publikation und Abbildung der Aufschriften auf den Amphoren attestierte. Der Band spürt anhand der in der Arbeitsstelle vorhandenen Archivalien zu den tituli picti auf Amphoren aus Rom der Arbeitsweise Dressels und seinem Wissensgewinn nach. Er zeigt exemplarisch einerseits, wie man zu Beginn der epigraphischen Grundlagenforschung im 19. Jahrhundert arbeitete, andererseits wie ein CIL-Band entstand und wie das CIL die Arbeit mit Inschriften bis heute bestimmt

Yet, as Richard Saller shows, the Natural History offers more insights into Roman ideas about economic growth than any other ancient source. Pliny's Roman Economy is the first comprehensive study of Pliny's economic thought and its implications for understanding the economy of the Roman EmpireAs Saller reveals, Pliny sometimes anticipates modern economic theory, while at other times his ideas suggest why Rome produced very few major inventions that resulted in sustained economic growth. On one hand, Pliny believed that new knowledge came by accident or divine intervention, not by human initiative; research and development was a foreign concept. When he lists 136 great inventions, they are mostly prehistoric and don't include a single one from Rome-offering a commentary on Roman innovation and displaying a reverence for the past that contrasts with the attitudes of the eighteenth-century encyclopedists credited with contributing to the Industrial Revolution. On the other hand, Pliny shrewdly recognized that Rome's lack of competition from other states suppressed incentives for innovation. Pliny's understanding should be noted because, as Saller shows, recent efforts to use scientific evidence about the ancient climate to measure the Roman economy are flawed.By exploring Pliny's ideas about discovery, innovation, and growth, Pliny's Roman Economy makes an important new contribution to the ongoing debate about economic growth in ancient Rome
