    Durch den weltwärts-Freiwilligendienst soll es ermöglicht werden, einen „persönlichen Beitrag zu einer gerechten Welt“ zu leisten. Doch welche Vorstellungen gehen mit diesem Dienst einher, der sich in einem von ungleichen Machtverhältnissen geprägten politischen Kontext bewegt? Mithilfe postkolonialer und feministischer Theorien untersucht die Autorin die Repräsentationen und Programmstrukturen. Sie fragt nach deren kolonialem Erbe und Nutzen für die Teilnehmenden. Im Fokus der Diskursanalyse steht die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit Konzepten von Entwicklung in Verbindung mit denen eines Weltbürgertums, das als pädagogische Antwort auf Globalisierungsfragen gilt.Die Studie zeigt die Verstrickung von kolonialer Geschichte und der Gegenwart entwicklungspolitischem Engagements auf. Sie verdeutlicht, wie notwendig es ist, eine machtkritische Perspektive auf Programme dieser Art zu werfen, um global-gesellschaftliche Machtverhältnisse nicht zu reproduzieren, sondern sie verändern zu können

    An examination of the divergent developmental legacies of forced settlement and colonial occupation on both sides of the Black Atlantic world. The European powers that colonized much of the world over the last few hundred years created a variety of social systems in their various colonies. In Ruling Emancipated Slaves and Indigenous Subjects, Olukunle P. Owolabi explores the divergent developmental trajectories of Global South nations that were shaped by forced settlement, where European colonists imported African slaves to establish large-scale agricultural plantations, or by colonial occupation, which resulted in the exploitation of indigenous non-white populations. Owolabi shows that most forced settlement colonies emerged from European domination with higher levels of education attainment, greater postcolonial democratization, and favorable human development outcomes relative to Global South countries that emerged from colonial occupation after 1945. To explain this paradox, he examines the distinctive legal-administrative institutions that were used to control indigenous colonial subjects and highlights the impact of liberal reforms that expanded the legal rights and political agency of former slaves following abolition. Spanning three centuries of colonial history and postcolonial development, this is the first book to systematically examine the distinctive patterns of state-building that resulted from forced settlement and colonial occupation in the Black Atlantic world

    In einer ländlichen Region Ugandas (Busoga) versuchen die Menschen ihren durch den zunehmenden Einfluss der Globalisierung erschwerten Lebensbedingungen zu begegnen und sich Handlungsspielräume zu schaffen. Aus postkolonialer Perspektive untersucht die Autorin die Rolle solidarischen Wirtschaftens hierbei. Dessen Nutzen als Überlebensstrategie wird ebenso beleuchtet wie sein Potenzial, Alternativen zu konventionellen Ansätzen wirtschaftlicher Entwicklung zu denken. An die Stelle westlichen „Expertentums“ tritt gelebte Erfahrung aus dem globalen Süden. Die Autorin beschreibt den Einfluss der Globalisierung auf den Alltag der Bevölkerung sowie auf soziale Ungleichheiten und stellt ihren postkolonialen Forschungsansatz detailliert dar. In a rural region of Uganda (Busoga), people are trying to manage their everyday lives and gain agency despite the negative effects of globalisation on their living conditions. In this book, from a postcolonial perspective, the author examines the role of solidarity-based economic activities in that process. She illuminates both the usefulness of solidarity-based economic activities as a survival strategy and their potential to offer alternatives to conventional approaches to economic development. Western ‘expertise’ is replaced by lived experiences from the global South. The author describes the influence of globalisation on the everyday life of the population as well as on social inequalities and presents her postcolonial research approach in detail.

    "This book presents an innovative African philosophical response to coloniality and the attendant epistemicide of Africa's knowledge systems, drawing on Igbo thinking. The book argues that theorizing modernity requires a critical conversation between African and Western scholarship, in order to unpack its links with coloniality and the subjugation of Africa's indigenous knowledges. In setting out this discussion, the book also connects with Latin American scholarship, demonstrating how the modern world is structured to marginalize and destroy knowledges from across the Global South. The book draws on Igbo epistemic resources of solidarity thinking, positioned in contrast to capitalist knowledge-patterns, thereby providing an important Africa-driven response to modernity and coloniality. The book concludes by arguing that the Igbo sense of solidarity is useful and relevant to modern contexts, and thus constitutes a vital resource for a less disruptive, more balanced, and more wholesome modernity.
