    Der Zweite Schlesische Krieg erreichte gegen Ende des Jahres 1745 auch Sachsen, im Dezember war Leipzig von preußischen Truppen besetzt. Die im Frieden von Dresden ausgehandelten Kontributionsforderungen belasteten Sachsen nachhaltig. Die Ereignisse und ihre Resonanz hinterließen Spuren im Gottsched-Briefwechsel des Bandes 11, der die Monate Oktober 1745 bis September 1746 umfasst. In den Briefen an Ernst Christoph von Manteuffel zeigt sich Gottsched um den unversehrten Fortbestand der Leipziger Universität besorgt. Seine akademischen Funktionen kommen in der Aufsicht über die Magisterpromotion und in den Luther- und Leibnizjubiläen des Jahres 1746 zur Geltung. Mit dem Tod des Herzogs von Weißenfels im Mai 1746 und dem Erlöschen der Sekundogenitur verlor die Weißenfelser Alethophilengesellschaft ihre Basis. Auch die Stettiner Alethophilen waren kaum noch aktiv, nachdem ihr Spiritus rector im Dezember 1745 verstorben war. Gottsched erhält Zuspruch für seine Zeitschrift Neuer Büchersaal, ihm werden weiterhin Stücke für seine Dramensammlung zugesandt. Im vorliegenden Zeitraum wird Gottscheds gezielte Suche nach Manuskripten mittelalterlicher deutscher Dichtung erstmals anhand des Briefwechsels sichtbar.

    Die immer noch zu wenig betrachtete erste Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts wird in der deutschen Kultur- und Literaturgeschichte maßgeblich von Pietismus und Frühaufklärung bestimmt. Ihrer Darstellung ist jeweils ein Teilband dieser Lyrik-Geschichte gewidmet. Im Kampf beider Reformbewegungen um Mündigkeit und Selbstbestimmung »vorzüglich in Religionssachen« (Kant) spielt die Lyrik eine bedeutende Rolle. Im Pietismus (Bd. 5/I) ist die geistliche Poesie sogar die einzige, extensiv dichterisch gepflegte Gattung und dient als Propagandainstrument und Medium der mystisch-häretisch inspirierten pietistischen Frömmigkeit. Die Frühaufklärung (Bd. 5/II) didaktisiert die lyrischen Gattungen, um durch sie zentrale Ideen des aus dem »Buch der Natur« abgeleiteten Systems natürlich-vernünftiger Welt-Deutung und Gesellschaftsregulierung an ein großes Laien-Publikum zu vermitteln. Die wichtigsten Lyriker des Zeitraums entwickeln die Poesie in Adaption und Kritik der new science zum eigenständigen Organ einer - zum Teil pantheistischen - Weltanschauung und einer liberaleren bürgerlichen Moral. So widerlegt gerade die deutsche Lyrik der Epoche eindrucksvoll das lang gehegte Vorurteil, die Aufklärung sei ein 'Zeitalter ohne Poesie'.

    Der Band konturiert die Bedeutung der 'vernünftigen Ärzte' in Halle um Stahl, Krüger, Unzer, E.A. Nicolai, Bolten u.a. für die anthropologische Wende um 1750. Gezielt wird damit auf die Anthropologie vor der Anthropologie (i.S. Platners und der spätaufklärerischen 'philosophischen Ärzte'). Im Zentrum stehen 1.) die Entstehungsbedingungen von Anthropologie und Ästhetik (Baumgarten, Meier u.a.) im Kontext von Stahlianismus, Pietismus, Thomasianismus und Wolffianismus, 2.) die Vordatierung der Ursprünge der Anthropologie im deutschsprachigen Raum von der Spät- in die Frühaufklärung, 3.) die Gleichursprünglichkeit von Anthropologie und Ästhetik auf Grund eines vergleichbaren, antikartesianischen Impulses, d.h. die Supplementierung der herkömmlichen Logik um eine 'Logik der sensitiven Erkenntnis' (d.i. Ästhetik) und ein ganzheitliches, Leib und Seele umfassendes Menschenbild (d.i. Anthropologie). Die Beiträge leisten einen Beitrag zur Erforschung jener disziplinären Bereiche der Moderne, die vom Kartesianischen Wissenschaftsdispositiv verdrängt worden und in der Wissenschaftsgeschichtsschreibung unthematisch geblieben sind. Der antikartesianische Impuls von Ästhetik und Anthropologie um 1750 macht die 'vernünftigen Ärzte' anschlußfähig an heutige Überlegungen zu Psychosomatik und ganzheitlichen Therapieansätzen und bildet die Brücke zu einer 'Logik des Individuellen'. The volume explores the significance of Halle's 'sensitive physicians' (inspired by the writings of Stahl, Krüger, Unzer, E.A. Nicolai, Bolten, and others) for the 'anthropological turn' that took place around 1750. In so doing it sets out in quest of pre-anthropological anthropology (see Platner and the late-Enlightenment 'philosophical physicians' for an analogy). Of central concern are (1) the roots of anthropology and aesthetics (Baumgarten, Meier, etc.) in the context of Stahlianism, pietism, Thomasianism, Wolffianism, (2) the predating of the origins of anthropology from late to early Enlightenment thinking, (3) the common roots of anthropology and aesthetics in a shared anti-Cartesian bid to supplement traditional logic with a 'logic of sensitive knowledge' (aesthetics) and a holistic image of the human animal encompassing body, mind, and spirit (anthropology). The articles break new ground by examining areas of modernism that have been successfully elbowed aside by Cartesian scientism and have thus been largely neglected in the historiography of science. Awareness of the anti-Cartesian currents in aesthetics and anthropology in and around 1750 also points up clear parallels between the 'sensitive physicians' and important tendencies in present-day thinking on psychosomatics and holistic therapy. It also points the way to a 'logic of the individual'.

    In the second half of the 18th century, the aesthetics of sensibility was the motivation for organized opposition to the 'cold' rationalism bound up with the name of Johann Christoph Gottsched. With recourse both to ancient and humanistic concepts of love, friendship, and sensibility and to medical and anthropological theorems on sensualism, there developed after 1740 a body of writings that have traditionally been designated as representing a 'culture of sensibility' referred to in German as Empfindsamkeit. In 14 studies, the contributors to this collection investigate the concepts behind the phenomenon of 'feeling-oriented' sociability, discuss examples from different literary genres, and engage with the contemporary reception accorded to the culture of sensibility. In der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts kam es zu einer gefühlsästhetisch motivierten Opposition gegen den "kalten" Rationalismus Gottschedscher Prägung. Unter Rückgriff auf antike und humanistische Konzepte von Liebe, Freundschaft und Gefühl sowie im Anschluß an medizinisch-anthropologische Theoreme zum Sensualismus entfaltete sich nach 1740 ein Schrifttum, das traditionell durch Zuschreibungen wie "Gefühlskultur" und "Empfindsamkeit" klassifiziert wird.     Versailles Meets the Taj Mahal identifies and explores the traces that exposure to India left on the cultural artifacts and mindset of France's "Great Century" and the early Enlightenment. Focusing on the salon of Marguerite de La Sablière and its encounter with the traveler and philosopher François Bernier, this book resurrects the conversations about India inspired by Bernier's travels and inscribed in his influential texts produced in collaboration with La Sablière's salon. The literary works, correspondences, and philosophical texts produced by the members of this eclectic salon bear the traces of this engagement with India. Faith E. Beasley's analysis of these conversations reveals France's unique engagement with India during this period and challenges prevailing images derived from a nineteenth-century "orientalism" imbued with colonialism. The India encountered in La Sablière's salon through Francois Bernier and others is not the colonized India that has come to dominate any image of the Orient. Versailles Meets the Taj Mahal adds a new chapter to literary and cultural history by adopting a new approach to the study of salon culture, exploring how texts, cultural artifacts, and patterns of thought were shaped by the collective reading and by the conversations emanating from these practices. Beasley's analysis highlights the unique role of French salon culture in the evolution of western thought during the early modern period.

    Die immer noch zu wenig betrachtete erste Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts wird in der deutschen Kultur- und Literaturgeschichte maßgeblich von Pietismus und Frühaufklärung bestimmt. Ihrer Darstellung ist jeweils ein Teilband dieser Lyrik-Geschichte gewidmet. Im Kampf beider Reformbewegungen um Mündigkeit und Selbstbestimmung »vorzüglich in Religionssachen« (Kant) spielt die Lyrik eine bedeutende Rolle. Im Pietismus (Bd. 5/I) ist die geistliche Poesie sogar die einzige, extensiv dichterisch gepflegte Gattung und dient als Propagandainstrument und Medium der mystisch-häretisch inspirierten pietistischen Frömmigkeit. Die Frühaufklärung (Bd. 5/II) didaktisiert die lyrischen Gattungen, um durch sie zentrale Ideen des aus dem »Buch der Natur« abgeleiteten Systems natürlich-vernünftiger Welt-Deutung und Gesellschaftsregulierung an ein großes Laien-Publikum zu vermitteln. Die wichtigsten Lyriker des Zeitraums entwickeln die Poesie in Adaption und Kritik der new science zum eigenständigen Organ einer - zum Teil pantheistischen - Weltanschauung und einer liberaleren bürgerlichen Moral. So widerlegt gerade die deutsche Lyrik der Epoche eindrucksvoll das lang gehegte Vorurteil, die Aufklärung sei ein 'Zeitalter ohne Poesie'.

    In the second half of the 18th century, the aesthetics of sensibility was the motivation for organized opposition to the 'cold' rationalism bound up with the name of Johann Christoph Gottsched. With recourse both to ancient and humanistic concepts of love, friendship, and sensibility and to medical and anthropological theorems on sensualism, there developed after 1740 a body of writings that have traditionally been designated as representing a 'culture of sensibility' referred to in German as Empfindsamkeit. In 14 studies, the contributors to this collection investigate the concepts behind the phenomenon of 'feeling-oriented' sociability, discuss examples from different literary genres, and engage with the contemporary reception accorded to the culture of sensibility. In der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts kam es zu einer gefühlsästhetisch motivierten Opposition gegen den "kalten" Rationalismus Gottschedscher Prägung. Unter Rückgriff auf antike und humanistische Konzepte von Liebe, Freundschaft und Gefühl sowie im Anschluß an medizinisch-anthropologische Theoreme zum Sensualismus entfaltete sich nach 1740 ein Schrifttum, das traditionell durch Zuschreibungen wie "Gefühlskultur" und "Empfindsamkeit" klassifiziert wird.     Das Buch befragt die deutsche Literatur- und Geistesgeschichte nach der Verdrängung der jüdischen Tradition und markiert die Lücken, die durch die Vertreibung der geistigen Repräsentanten des Judentums aus dem deutschen Sprachraum gerissen worden sind. Als in Deutschland gegen Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts uneingeschränkte Bewunderung für das antike Griechentum aufkam, wurde gleichzeitig das sich gerade der europäischen Aufklärung öffnende Judentum auf dem Schauplatz der Religionskritik vehement bekämpft. In diesem Kontext ist der aggressive Antijudaismus zu verstehen, mit dem sich Goethe und Schiller gegen die Sinai-Offenbarung und deren legendären Mittler Moses wandten. Beginnend mit Winckelmann hat die deutsche Klassik einen neuen Legitimationsdiskurs geschaffen, der unter Rückgriff auf den antiken Polytheismus das ‚produktive Individuum‘ und die ‚wachsende Natur‘ zu seinen zentralen Kategorien machte und damit den geltenden Monotheismus zu verdrängen suchte. Im Gegensatz dazu suchten Mendelssohn und Heine die Position einer deutsch-jüdischen Moderne zu etablieren. Das Buch verfolgt, wie der ‚Weltanschauungskampf‘ gegen den Monotheismus zum ‚völkischen‘ Antisemitismus des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts führte und in der Shoa mündete, was die Verdrängung der jüdischen Tradition aus dem kulturellen Gedächtnis der Deutschen zur Folge hatte.

    "In this fascinating collection of essays Harvard Emeritus Professor Karl S. Guthke examines the ways in which, for European scholars and writers of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century, world-wide geographical exploration led to an exploration of the self. Guthke explains how in the age of Enlightenment and beyond intellectual developments were fuelled by excitement about what Ulrich Im Hof called "the grand opening-up of the wide world", especially of the interior of the non-European continents. This outward turn was complemented by a fascination with "the world within" as anthropology and ethnology focused on the humanity of the indigenous populations of far-away lands - an interest in human nature that suggested a way for Europeans to understand themselves, encapsulated in Gauguin's Tahitian rumination "What are we?" The essays in the first half of the book discuss first- or second-hand, physical or mental encounters with the exotic lands and populations beyond the supposed cradle of civilisation. The works of literature and documents of cultural life featured in these essays bear testimony to the crossing not only of geographical, ethnological, and cultural borders but also of borders of a variety of intellectual activities and interests. The second section examines the growing interest in astronomy and the engagement with imagined worlds in the universe, again with a view to understanding homo sapiens, as compared now to the extra-terrestrials that were confidently assumed to exist. The final group of essays focuses on the exploration of the landscape of what was called "the universe within"; featuring, among a variety of other texts, Schiller's plays The Maid of Orleans and William Tell, these essays observe and analyse what Erich Heller termed "The Artist's Journey into the Interior." This collection, which travels from the interior of continents to the interior of the mind, is itself a set of explorations that revel in the discovery of what was half-hidden in language.
