    This is an analysis of English studies in higher education, addressed in particular to practitioners in the field - teachers and students. As Heather Murray states in her introduction, those who work in English are likely to have a stronger sense of critical history than of disciplinary history. She contends that, in order to understand and reform the discipline of English studies, it is necessary to shift the focus of examination 'down and back' - to look at ordinary and often taken-for-granted disciplinary practices (such as pedagogy), and to extend the historical frame. Murray begins with an examination of some important historical moments in the developments of the discipline in Canada: the appointment in 1889 of W.J. Alexander as first professor of English at the University of Toronto; the twenty-five-year experiment early in this century in rhetorical and dramatic education for women that the Margaret Eaton School of Literature and Expression represented; and the entry of 'theory' into the English-Canadian academy. The second section examines some of the common features and routines of English departments, such as curriculum design, seminar groups, tests and assignments, essay questions, and the conference, in order to establish the critical/political principles that underpin study and teaching in the academy today. In this section, Murray also focuses on the role of women as students and teachers of English. The final section surveys the literature available for further research on the discipline and for constructing a history of English studies in Canada. Theory/Culture

    Literary studies are in danger of being left behind in the twenty-first century. Print culture risks becoming a thing of the past in the multimedia age; meanwhile, human life and society are undergoing rapid changes as a result of new technologies, the intensification of global capitalism, and the effects of human actions on the environment.In this transformed world, William Paulson argues for a radical renewal of literary studies. Modern literary culture has defined itself, in opposition to science, politics, and commerce, as a protected sphere of democratic and free inquiry, but today that autonomy may lead to isolation from the real dynamics of cultural and global change. Paulson clearly and convincingly demonstrates the need for literary studies to embrace both the unfashionable literary past and the technologically saturated future, and to train not a countersociety of cultural critics but citizens of the world who can communicate the irreducible strangeness and multiplicity of literature to a society on hyperdrive. Much of the history of how Jesuit traditions contributed to the development of rhetorical theory and pedagogy has been lost, effaced, or dispersed.     As a break from their ordained labors, what might the Muses today do on their lunch hour? This collection of witty, shrewd, and imaginative essays addresses interdisciplinary topics that range widely from Shakespeare, to psychoanalysis, to the practice of higher education today. With the ease born of deep knowledge, Marjorie Garber moves from comical journalistic quirks ("Fig Leaves") to the curious return of myth and ritual in the theories of evolutionary psychologists ("Ovid, Now and Then").Two themes emerge consistently in Garber’s latest exploration of symptoms of culture. The first is that to predict the "next big thing" in literary studies we should look back at ideas and practices set aside by a previous generation of critics. In the past several decades we have seen the reemergence of—for example—textual editing, biography, character criticism, aesthetics, and philology as "hot" new areas for critical intervention. The second theme expands on this observation, making the case for "cultural forgetting" as the way the arts and humanities renew themselves, both within fields and across them.     "A critique of the postmodern pluralist faction in composition and rhetoric that has led these disciplines to value diverse student voices over the teaching of critical thinking and writing, this book explains why political literacy is necessary and how instructors may teach it"--... "In Political Literacy in Composition and Rhetoric: Defending Academic Discourse against Postmodern Pluralism, rhetoric and writing scholar Donald Lazere calls for the revival of National Council of Teachers of English resolutions in the 1970s for teaching the "critical reading, listening, viewing, and thinking skills necessary to enable students to cope with the persuasive techniques in political statements, advertising, entertainment, and news," and explores the reasons these goals have been eclipsed in composition studies over recent decades. A survey of obstacles to those goals begins with the emphasis in the profession on basic and first year writing at the expense of more advanced study in argumentative rhetoric, and on the privileging of students' personal writing over critical study of both academic and political discourse. Under the sway of postmodern-pluralist theory, the limitless multiplication of diverse "voices," "stories," "conversations," "contact zones," and local "discursive sites" has tended to destabilize or even denigrate any common ground of academic discourse and vocabulary, including that of basic critical citizenship. Lazere argues that theorists who legitimately validate students' multicultural home communities sometimes fail to recognize that liberal education presents a privileged space for students to grow beyond their home cultures and expand their horizons to awareness of national and international politics. He similarly argues that ingenuous educational pluralism often serves to dissipate the coherent progressive consciousness and political action needed to confront the increasing domination of American public discourse by corporate oligarchy, propaganda apparatuses, and distraction from politics through consumerism and entertainment. Moreover, the fixation in recent composition studies on liberally-inclined students and communities "on the margins" has eclipsed attention to the conservative conformity long prevalent in mainstream America. So the book explores means of challenging the conservative conditioning of students at middle-American colleges like those where Lazere has taught for many years. His proposals for curriculum and pedagogy beyond first-year-writing seek to introduce students to a more highly-informed, cogent, and open-ended level of debate between the political left and right.     How do American intellectuals try to achieve their political and social goals? By what means do they articulate their hopes for change? John McGowan seeks to identify the goals and strategies of contemporary humanistic intellectuals who strive to shape the politics and culture of their time. In a lively mix of personal reflection and shrewd analysis, McGowan visits the sites of intellectual activity (scholarly publications, professional conferences, the classroom, and the university) and considers the hazards of working within such institutional contexts to effect change outside the academy. Democracy's Children considers the historical trajectory that produced current intellectual practices. McGowan links the growing prestige of "culture" since 1800 to the growth of democracy and the obsession with modernity and explores how intellectuals became both custodians and creators of culture. Caught between fears of culture's irrelevance and dreams of its omnipotence, intellectuals pursue a cultural politics that aims for wide-ranging social transformations. For better or worse, McGowan says, the humanities are now tied to culture and to the university. The opportunities and frustrations attendant on this partnership resonate with the larger successes and failures of contemporary democratic societies. His purpose in this collection of essays is to illuminate the conditions under which intellectuals in a democracy work and at the same time to promote intellectual activities that further democratic ideals.

    As a break from their ordained labors, what might the Muses today do on their lunch hour? This collection of witty, shrewd, and imaginative essays addresses interdisciplinary topics that range widely from Shakespeare, to psychoanalysis, to the practice of higher education today. With the ease born of deep knowledge, Marjorie Garber moves from comical journalistic quirks ("Fig Leaves") to the curious return of myth and ritual in the theories of evolutionary psychologists ("Ovid, Now and Then").Two themes emerge consistently in Garber’s latest exploration of symptoms of culture. The first is that to predict the "next big thing" in literary studies we should look back at ideas and practices set aside by a previous generation of critics. In the past several decades we have seen the reemergence of—for example—textual editing, biography, character criticism, aesthetics, and philology as "hot" new areas for critical intervention. The second theme expands on this observation, making the case for "cultural forgetting" as the way the arts and humanities renew themselves, both within fields and across them. Although she is never represented in traditional paintings or poetry, a missing Muse—we can call her Amnesia—turns out to be a key figure for the creation of theory and criticism in the arts
