    Encounters between people of diverse religious faiths and worldviews are becoming more common in an increasingly globalized and mobile world. Research has not, however, kept pace by investigating how people talk about their faith with others who believe differently. This monograph addresses that deficit by taking an emergent path, combining qualitative and quantitative analysis to investigate and understand multilingual speakers' discursive behaviors in multiparty interreligious dialogues. Using 33 hours of recordings from conversations across seven research sites, Sauer Bredvik investigates how speakers’ multilanguaging practices interact with other indexical and referential signs (unfilled pauses, disfluency, pragmatic markers) to affect how constitute messages are understood. By combining corpus-assisted discourse analysis with emic data taken from observation and 11 hours of participant interviews, one is able to identify distinct patterns of use between these metalinguistic indicators and a dialogue outcome. Readers will gain an understanding of how people of various linguistic and faith backgrounds use all their semiotic resources to display hospitality and respect for the Other in multilingual, multifaith settings

    The book provides an introduction to an interdisciplinary field of inquiry that can be called "global linguistics" (GL). GL emerges to tackle the ever-growing phenomenon of intercultural communication (IC) in today's world of international contacts. The specific aim of GL is to look at the form and contents of dialogues among speakers of different cultural backgrounds who will use a "default language" or koiné (usually English) to interact, in order to detect communication breakdowns at various levels of "depth", as well as the opportunities for developing sound intercultural communication practice. The book includes an accessible presentation of fundamental questions concerning languages and language use. Among the questions addressed are the universal design features of languages, the connection between language and conceptual systems, how people use language to coordinate their actions and interact in a variety of social contexts, and the place of language in a semiotic view of culture. The volume also addresses how language, context and culture shape the way in which we argue a point and try to persuade other people, and why intercultural argumentation is both necessary and risky.Global Linguistics: An Introduction describes fundamental notions in linguistics and cognate fields and is thus well-suited for use as a textbook in courses dealing with IC in general. At the same time, the book is of general interest to scholars in linguistics and communication studies, as it places particular emphasis on theoretical models such as argumentation theory and conceptual metaphor theory, which are generally not presented in textbooks on language and IC.

    Grounded primarily in the ethnography of communication and aligned with the multidisciplinarity of discourse analysis, the book examines the use of proverbs in the daily life of a social network of Mexican-origin transnational families in Chicago and Michoacán, Mexico. Various and detailed analyses of actual proverb use reveal that proverbs in this particular population function as a highly contextualized communicative strategy that serves four discrete social functions: to argue, to advise, to establish rapport, and to entertain. Proposing that the social and cognitive aspects of language use must be combined for a complete understanding of how such genres of language are actually used by regular people in daily life, the author shows how ordinary people use sophisticated cognitive processes to interpret the socially-relevant meanings of proverbs in everyday conversation. The book provides an unusual mix of contextualized discourse analysis that is ethnographic, linguistic, and cognitive, yielding much needed insight into a segment of the Mexican-origin population of the Midwestern U.S., a population whose increasing importance and size is often mentioned, but about which precious few linguistic studies have been conducted. The volume not only helps to fill this void but it is also one of the few studies that focuses on the impact of transnationalism on linguistic practices, regardless of cultural group. Departing from the conventional approach of ignoring the role of everyday-language use in order to focus exclusively on culture, economics, or migrant patterns, the book makes linguistic practice the central issue, and thus affirms that it is language that weaves together the two distant sites of transnational communities, providing a fertile area for understanding the perspectives of the transmigrants themselves

Through a critical sociolinguistic and discourse analysis of the data collected in an ethnographic study, the book shows the exclusion caused by monolingualizing tendencies and ideologies of deficit in education and society.The book opens a timely discussion of the management of diversity in multilingual and multicultural classrooms, both for countries with a long tradition of migration flows and for those where the phenomenon is relatively new, as is the case in Spain.     Zeiten drohender oder eingetretener gesellschaftlicher Krisenlagen sind immer auch Hochzeiten der inner- wie außerwissenschaftlichen Diskussion über die Rolle der Massenmedien. Fast schon traditionell differenzieren sich die Positionen, die in dieser - immer auch von den Medien selbstreflexiv aufgenommenen - Debatte vertreten werden, anhand der normativen Pole "Abwiegelung" und "Panikmache". Die Arbeit geht anhand einer detaillierten textlinguistischen Analyse des massenmedialen Diskurses zur Vogelgrippe im Jahr 2006 der Frage nach, ob diese sich regelmäßig wiederholende Kontroverse auf bestimmte Funktionsprinzipien von (Medien-)Diskursen zurückführen lässt. Unter Bezugnahme auf den Foucaultschen Diskursbegriff entwickelt sie dabei die Schlüsselkategorie der "diskursiven Rolle" - verstanden als Träger diskursiver Handlungen - und baut diese zu einem Modell des Diskurses als Rollenspiel aus. Die Arbeit weist nach, dass Mediendiskurse auf diese Weise als ein Miteinander- und Aufeinander-Einwirken der unterschiedlichen, in Texten sprachlich manifestierten diskursiven Rollen verstanden werden können. Erklärbar wird so nicht nur die Koinzidenz von sich scheinbar ausschließenden Merkmalen medialer Berichterstattung, sondern auch die frappierende Invarianz diverser gesellschaftlicher Diskurse gegenüber grundlegenden Neuentwicklungen im gesellschaftlichen und naturwissenschaftlichen Kontext

    Der vorliegende Sammelband, der Uta Quasthoffs Werk zu ihrem 65. Geburtstages würdigt, will einen Einblick in die Reichhaltigkeit linguistischer Erzählforschung geben. Die zwei zentralen Schwerpunkte sind das mündliche Erzählen und seine Einbettung in sprachliche Interaktionen sowie der Erwerb von Erzählfähigkeiten als Teil umfassenderer diskursiver Kompetenzen.Das Erzählen als Teil alltäglicher Interaktionen wird in verschiedenen Aspekten beleuchtet: Seine Inhalte reichen von der Rekonstruktion des nächtlichen Traums über die Darstellung eigener Erfahrung bis hin zur Lebensgeschichte. Seine soziale Funktion zeigt sich, wenn die eigene Position von anderen abgesetzt und eine "narrative Identität" präsentiert wird.     Die Literatur des Realismus in Deutschland 1850 bis 1900 vollzieht einen regen Wissensaustausch über Diskursgrenzen hinweg. Während die Belletristik Gedankenfiguren der zeitgenössischen Volkswirtschaftslehre aneignet, um fiktionale Geschichten mit sachlicher Plausibilität auszustatten, greift der ökonomische Diskurs auf literarische Verfahren für die eigene Wissensdarstellung zurück. Die Studie untersucht dieses Beziehungsgeflecht innerhalb der realistischen Diskursivität an Prosawerken von Literaten wie Wilhelm Raabe, Gottfried Keller, Gustav Freytag und Friedrich Spielhagen sowie nationalökonomischen Texten von Wilhelm Roscher und Gustav Schmoller. Sie bestimmt die diskursübergreifende Poetologie des Realismus und schildert dabei zugleich ein kulturwissenschaftlich gehaltvolles Wirtschaftsdenken, das historistisch, institutionalistisch und ordnungspolitisch argumentiert und im Ganzen eine antisystemische Alternative zu marktwirtschaftlichen Analysen in der Traditionslinie von Adam Smith bis Carl Menger und zur sozialistischen Theorie von Karl Marx abgibt

    Ausgangspunkt des Bands Ästhetik und Politik der Zerstreuung ist die Annahme, dass die produktive Instanz von Kultur ein anonymer Prozess diskursiver Zerstreuung und Zerstreutheit ist, dem als entgegengesetzte Operationen Formen von Sammlung und Konzentration entgegenwirken. Während letztere die Funktionen der Hierarchisierung, Totalisierung und Identifi zierung übernehmen, also Ordnung stiften in Bereichen, die eigentlich vom Prinzip der Dispersion gekennzeichnet sind, interessieren sich die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bands für ebenjene Momente kultureller Produktion, in denen das Prinzip der Zerstreuung entfesselt wird, Schlupflöcher findet, Grenzen überwindet und Fluchtlinien eröffnet. Angeregt von Überlegungen der Dortmunder Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaftlerin Ute Gerhard widmen sie sich in exemplarischen Studien den Praktiken, Räumen, Diskursen und Subjektivitäten der Zerstreuung.     Hilfsorganisationen transportieren mit ihren Werbekampagnen Bilder von Not und Elend aus „Entwicklungsländern“ und „Krisengebieten“ direkt in unseren Alltag. Damit reifizieren sie kollektive Imaginationen und Regionalisierungen des helfenden Eigenen und des leidenden Anderen und wirken auf diese Weise an der Fortschreibung kolonialer Strukturen mit. An diesem Punkt setzt der vorliegende Beitrag an. Er konzentriert sich auf die Fragen, inwieweit die Diskurse nichtstaatlicher Hilfsorganisationen regionale und soziale geographical imaginations von Not und Unterentwicklung (re-) produzieren und inwieweit sie diese aber auch durch veränderte und komplexere Sichtweisen kritisieren und transformieren. Zur theoretischen und methodischen Bearbeitung dieser zweigeteilten Fragestellung wurde das klassische Programm der Critical Geopolitics durch postkoloniale und poststrukturalistische Elemente sowie diskursanalytische Methoden (Lexikometrie, qualitative Mikroanalyse) erweitert. Die Analyse kann herausarbeiten, wie stark der Diskurs der Hilfsorganisationen bis heute die Geographien einer polarisierten Welt zwischen entwickelt und unterentwickelt reproduziert, ohne das teleologische Entwicklungsleitbild der westlichen Moderne durch postkoloniale Positionierungen und kritische Stimmen in nennenswerter Weise zu verstören oder aufzubrechen. In their advertising campaigns, aid organizations transport images of need and misery from ‘developing countries’ and ‘conflict areas’ into our everyday lives. By reifying collective imaginations and regionalizations of the helping Self and the suffering Other, they contribute to the continuation of colonial structures. It is here where the present paper sets off: It investigates to what degree discourses of non-governmental aid organizations (re) produce regional and social geographical imaginations of aid and underdevelopment. At the same time, it focuses on the extent to which changing and more complex perspectives might criticize and transform those discourses. On a theoretical basis, this two-fold objective is approached with insights from Critical Geopolitics as well as postcolonial and poststructuralist elements. Empirically, these perspectives are applied in discourse analytical methods (lexicometry and qualitative micro-analysis). Findings have illustrated that discourses of aid organizations continue to reproduce geographies of a world polarized between ‘developed’ and ‘underdeveloped’; with rarely any postcolonial positions and critical voices which might disturb, let alone disrupt, this teleological ideal of Western modernity.
