The volume deals with the relationship between dialogue and rhetoric. The actual state of the art in dialogue analysis is characterized by a tendency to overcome the distinction between competence and performance and to combine components from both sides of the dichotomy, in a way which includes rules as well as inferences. The same is true of rhetoric: the guidelines proposed here no longer state that rationality and persuasion are mutually exclusive but suggest that they interact in what might be called the ‘mixed game’. The concept of a dialogic rhetoric thus poses the question of how to integrate the different voices. Part I of the volume assembles several ‘rhetorical paradigms’ which are applied to real-life performance. Part II on ‘rhetoric in the mixed game’ contains a selection of papers which illustrate the interaction of various components. The Round Table discussion in Part III brings proponents of different paradigms face to face with each other and shows how they justify their own positions and present arguments against rival paradigms.

"The Argument Culture is about a pervasive warlike atmosphere that makes us approach anything we need to accomplish as a fight between two opposing sides. The argument culture urges us to regard the world - and the people in it - in an adversarial frame of mind. It rests on the assumption that opposition is the best way to get anything done: The best way to explore an idea is to set up a debate; the best way to cover the news is to find spokespeople who express the most extreme, polarized views and present them as "both sides"; the best way to settle disputes is litigation that pits one party against the other; the best way to begin an essay is to oppose someone; and the best way to show you're really thinking is to criticize and attack." "The war on drugs, the war on cancer, the battle of the sexes, politicians' turf battles - in the argument culture, war metaphors pervade our talk and shape our thinking. Tannen shows how deeply entrenched this cultural tendency is, the forms it takes, and how it affects us every day - sometimes in useful ways, but often causing, rather than avoiding, damage. In the argument culture, the quality of information we receive is compromised, and our spirits are corroded by living in an atmosphere of unrelenting contention." "Tannen explores the roots of the argument culture, the role played by gender, and how other cultures suggest alternative ways to negotiate disagreement and mediate conflicts - and make things better, in public and in private, wherever people are trying to resolve differences and get things done."--BOOK JACKET.

This interdisciplinary collection brings together essays by leading Bakhtin critics along with chapters by eminent scholars who have developed and extended Bakhtin's concept of dialogue. The volume presents a cross-section of recent dialogic approaches within literary theory, philosophy, linguistics, and cultural studies - and extrapolates these approaches to such fields as social history, discourse analysis, and anthropology. Dialogue is understood not only as an exchange among intratextual voices, but also as an extratextual interplay of historical influences, oral forms, and cultural heuristics. Throughout the volume, the concept of dialogue invokes a range of interrelated concerns: historical issues involving national politics, English topography, and the British public sphere; theoretical issues concerning cultural relativity, Russian formalism, and speech-act theory; critical issues elaborating Marxist, historicist, and dialogic literary criticism; generic issues delimiting the lyric, novel, and essay; and linguistic issues concerning the relation between literary dialogue, everyday conversation, and other spoken forms. The contributors address such varied topics as rhetorical models for the establishment and exercise of political power, the relation between spoken and written discourse, and the idea of literature as social action. These essays, taken together, argue for a redefinition of literary meaning - one that is communal, interactive, and vocatively created.

"A comprehensive analysis of contemporary US television series. Combining an interdisciplinary and multi-methodological approach, Monika Bednarek brings together linguistic analysis of the new Sydney Corpus of Television Dialogue with analysis of scriptwriting manuals, interviews with Hollywood scriptwriters, and a survey undertaken with university students about their consumption of TV series. In so doing, she creates five new and original empirical studies. The focus on language use in a professional context (the television industry), on scriptwriting pedagogy, and on learning and teaching provides an applied linguistic lens on TV series that is complemented by perspectives taken from media linguistics, corpus linguistics and sociocultural linguistics/sociolinguistics. Throughout the book, multiple dialogue extracts are presented from a wide variety of well-known fictional television series including The Big Bang Theory, Grey's Anatomy and Bones. Researchers in applied linguistics, discourse analysis, CDA, corpus linguistics, sociolinguistics and media linguistics will find the book both stimulating and unique in its approach"...
