    This Open Access book investigates the methodological and ethical dilemmas involved when working with digital technologies and large-scale datasets in relation to ethnographic studies of digital migration practices and trajectories. Digital technologies reshape not only every phase of the migration process itself (by providing new ways to access, to share and preserve relevant information) but also the activities of other actors, from solidarity networks to border control agencies. In doing so, digital technologies create a whole new set of ethical and methodological challenges for migration studies: from data access to data interpretation, privacy protection, and research ethics more generally. Of specific concern are the aspects of digital migration researchers accessing digital platforms used by migrants, who are subject to precarious and insecure life circumstances, lack recognised papers and are in danger of being rejected and deported. Thus, the authors call for new modes of caring for (big) data when researching migrants’ digital practices in the configuration of migration and borders. Besides taking proper care of research participants’ privacy, autonomy, and security, this also spans carefully establishing analytically sustainable environments for the respective data sets. In doing so, the book argues that it is essential to carefully reflect on researchers’ own positioning as being part of the challenge they seek to address.

    More, more, more! Das digitale Medienzeitalter ist das der Information. Mehr noch: Es ist ein Zeitalter der Informationsexzesse. Seit 2007 prognostiziert die International Data Corporation (IDC) regelmäßig eine immer rasantere Expansion des digitalen Informationsuniversums.1 Wurden damals noch schätzungsweise 161 Exabyte, d.h. 161 Milliarden Gigabyte, digitaler Informationen kreiert, erfasst oder repliziert (vgl. IDC 2007: 3), waren es 2010 bereits ca. 1.200 Exabytes (vgl. IDC 2010:1). Ein Ende dieser Expansion ist nicht in Sicht. Im Jahr 2020 werden, so die aktuellen Prognosen, 40.000 Exabyte digitale Informationen erzeugt (vgl. IDC 2012).2 Auch wenn es sich hierbei zum größten Teil um flüchtige Daten handelt, die nicht permanent gespeichert werden, drängt sich die Frage auf, welche Effekte die scheinbar grenzenlose Verfügbarkeit von Informationen zeitigen wird

    We have long moved on from a mere information age to the era of big data. Here, databases represent both the enormous potential for gaining knowledge of data collection and the alarming information excesses of digital culture. Furthermore, the term refers to concrete technologies and processes of gathering and accessing digital information. Media theory has to locate databases in between these very different conceptions. Marcus Burkhardt retraces the history of databases and asks how technical procedures of processing digital information determine what can be found how in databases and what knowledge can be gained through them Wir leben längst nicht mehr nur im Informationszeitalter, sondern in der Ära von Big Data. In dieser steht die Datenbank gleichzeitig für die riesigen Erkenntnispotenziale von Informationssammlungen wie für die bedrohlichen Informationsexzesse der digitalen Medienkultur. Zudem bezeichnet der Begriff konkrete Technologien und Verfahren der Sammlung und Bereitstellung von digitalen Informationen.Zwischen diesen sehr unterschiedlichen Auffassungen gilt es, Datenbanken medientheoretisch zu verorten. Marcus Burkhardt zeichnet die Geschichte der Datenbanken nach und fragt, wie technische Verfahren der Verwaltung digitaler Informationen bedingen, was auf welche Weise in Datenbanken gefunden und durch sie gewusst werden kann

    This Open Access book investigates the methodological and ethical dilemmas involved when working with digital technologies and large-scale datasets in relation to ethnographic studies of digital migration practices and trajectories. Digital technologies reshape not only every phase of the migration process itself (by providing new ways to access, to share and preserve relevant information) but also the activities of other actors, from solidarity networks to border control agencies. In doing so, digital technologies create a whole new set of ethical and methodological challenges for migration studies: from data access to data interpretation, privacy protection, and research ethics more generally. Of specific concern are the aspects of digital migration researchers accessing digital platforms used by migrants, who are subject to precarious and insecure life circumstances, lack recognised papers and are in danger of being rejected and deported. Thus, the authors call for new modes of caring for (big) data when researching migrants’ digital practices in the configuration of migration and borders. Besides taking proper care of research participants’ privacy, autonomy, and security, this also spans carefully establishing analytically sustainable environments for the respective data sets. In doing so, the book argues that it is essential to carefully reflect on researchers’ own positioning as being part of the challenge they seek to address.

Seit 2007 prognostiziert die International Data Corporation (IDC) regelmäßig eine immer rasantere Expansion des digitalen Informationsuniversums.1 Wurden damals noch schätzungsweise 161 Exabyte, d.h. 161 Milliarden Gigabyte, digitaler Informationen kreiert, erfasst oder repliziert (vgl. IDC 2007: 3), waren es 2010 bereits ca. 1.200 Exabytes (vgl. IDC 2010:1). Ein Ende dieser Expansion ist nicht in Sicht. Im Jahr 2020 werden, so die aktuellen Prognosen, 40.000 Exabyte digitale Informationen erzeugt (vgl. IDC 2012).2 Auch wenn es sich hierbei zum größten Teil um flüchtige Daten handelt, die nicht permanent gespeichert werden, drängt sich die Frage auf, welche Effekte die scheinbar grenzenlose Verfügbarkeit von Informationen zeitigen wird

In dieser steht die Datenbank gleichzeitig für die riesigen Erkenntnispotenziale von Informationssammlungen wie für die bedrohlichen Informationsexzesse der digitalen Medienkultur. Zudem bezeichnet der Begriff konkrete Technologien und Verfahren der Sammlung und Bereitstellung von digitalen Informationen. Zwischen diesen sehr unterschiedlichen Auffassungen gilt es, Datenbanken medientheoretisch zu verorten. Marcus Burkhardt zeichnet die Geschichte der Datenbanken nach und fragt, wie technische Verfahren der Verwaltung digitaler Informationen bedingen, was auf welche Weise in Datenbanken gefunden und durch sie gewusst werden kann.

The conference focuses on authorship attribution, fake news detection and news tracking, noise-detection in automatically transferred relevance judgments, impact of online education on children's conversational search behavior, analysis of multi-modal social media content, knowledge graphs for sensitivity identification, a fusion of deep learning and logic rules for sentiment analysis, medical concept normalization and domain-specific information extraction. In addition to this, the volume presents 7 "Best of the labs" papers which were reviewed as full paper submissions with the same review criteria. 13 lab overview papers were accepted and represent scientific challenges based on new datasets and real world problems in multimodal and multilingual information access
