Im Spiegel dieses alten Topos werden Grundfragen der Moderne reflektiert: das Verhältnis von Immanenz und Transzendenz, Fremdbestimmung und Freiheit, Toleranz und Dogma. Die Studie von Matthias Löwe rekonstruiert den modernen Diskurs über Mythos und Monotheismus und sein ästhetisches Potential, das vor allem im frühen 20. Jahrhundert freigesetzt wird, bei Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Gerhart Hauptmann, Arnold Schönberg und Thomas Mann. Mit der Ästhetisierung von Mythos und Monotheismus verfolgen diese Intellektuellen keine religionsgeschichtlichen Interessen. Vielmehr wird im Gewand literarisierter Mythen oder biblischer Geschichten um die Deutung der Moderne gerungen. Around 1900, the history of European ideas shows a growing fascination with the contrast between myth and monotheism, between the many gods and the one God. In the mirror of this ancient topos, fundamental questions of modernity are reflected: the relationship between immanence and transcendence, heteronomy and freedom, tolerance and dogma. Matthias Löwe's study reconstructs the modern discourse on myth and monotheism and its aesthetic potential, which is released especially in the early 20th century, in Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Gerhart Hauptmann, Arnold Schönberg, and Thomas Mann. In aestheticizing myth and monotheism, these intellectuals are not pursuing interests in the history of religion. Rather, in the guise of literary myths or biblical stories, they struggle to interpret modernity.

Er ist auch Romanist, Komparatist und Mitbegründer des Bonner Centre for the Classical Tradition. Die positive, platonische Romantik hatte eine dunkle, negative Kehrseite: den romantischen Desillusionismus einschließlich des »Gothic« und des dämonischen Doppelgänger-Motivs. So wurde der von der Classical Tradition überkommene Konflikt von Platon und Pyrrhon, Fundamentalismus und Skeptizismus, Optimismus und Pessimismus weitergetragen. Lord Byron war die meist gehörte, doch bei weitem nicht die einzige Stimme des romantischen Desillusionismus in Europa. Diese vergleichende Studie einer Vielzahl skeptizistischer Stimmen in vielen Sprachen zeigt, wie traditionelle pyrrhonische Argumente den Jahrzehnten der romantischen Bewegung angepasst wurden – eine subversive Gegenströmung, auch zum späteren Viktorianismus, die sich in der Literatur von Décadence und Fin de Siècle wieder Bahn brach.; Platonic Romanticism had a dark underside from its inception: Romantic Disillusionism, encompassing the Gothic and the new demonic doppelganger. The Classical Tradition’s conflict between Plato and Pyrrho, foundationalism and scepticism, optimism and pessimism was thus continued. Lord Byron’s was the most listened-to and echoed voice of Romantic Disillusionism in Europe, though by far not the only one. This comparative study of a multiplicity of sceptical English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Polish, and Czech voices shows how traditional Pyrrhonic arguments were updated to suit the decades of the Romantic Movement, surviving as a subversive countercurrent to later Victorianism and resurging in the literature of the Decadence and Fin de Siècle.

    Um 1900 war das medizinische Phänomen der Neurasthenie zu einem allgemeinen Störungsbild angewachsen, an dem sich das Unbehagen an der Moderne manifestierte. Die Neurasthenie war immer mehr als das psychische Leiden einzelner – sie war auch der Preis, den Gesellschaft für den Fortschritt zu zahlen hatte. Auch Thomas Mann war vom Nervendiskurs seiner Zeit wie auch vom Wissen um die Neurasthenie beeinflusst. Vor allem im frühen Werk, so in Buddenbrooks und Tonio Kröger, versammeln sich diese Themen wie in einem Brennglas: Zwischen Degeneration und Psychologie des Selbst ist die Neurasthenie zum Symptom einer Krise des bürgerlichen Subjekts geworden; so kann z.B. aus heutiger Sicht die Symptomatik Thomas Buddenbrooks als erste Fallvignette in der Geschichte des Burnouts gelesen werden. In diesem Band geht es aber nicht darum, die zur Schablone gewordene Deutung der Neurasthenie als Zeitkrankheit um 1900 auf die Gegenwart zu legen. Vielmehr sollen die Diskurse um Nervenkrankheit und künstlerisches Potential als zeitgebundene Debatten befragt und nach den Bedingungen des Schreibens im Spiegel der Neurasthenie gefragt werden. Die Wiederbesichtigung eines berühmten Topos – Krankheit und Kunst bei Thomas Mann – will damit einen neuen Blick auf ein altes Thema werfen. By 1900, the medical phenomenon of neurasthenia had grown into an image of general disorder manifesting the malaise of modernity. Neurasthenia was always more than the psychological suffering of individuals – it was also the price society had to pay for progress. Thomas Mann, too, was influenced by his contemporaries‘ obsession with time. Especially in his early works, such as Buddenbrooks and Tonio Kröger, these subjects come together as if focussed in a burning glass: between degeneration and the psychology of the self, neurasthenia has become a symptom of a crisis of the bourgeois subject; from today's perspective, for example, the symptomatology of Thomas Buddenbrooks can be read as the first case vignette in the history of burnout. In this volume, however, the aim is not to apply the interpretation of neurasthenia as a contemporary illness around 1900 to the present, which application has by now turned into a simple template. Rather, it aims to interrogate the discourses surrounding neurasthenia and artistic potential as time-bound debates and to ask about the conditions of writing in the mirror of neurasthenia. This revisiting of a famous topos – illness and art in Thomas Mann – thus aims to take a new look at an old topic.

    In The Aesthetics of Decay, Dylan Trigg confronts the remnants from the fallout of post-industrialism and postmodernism. Through a considered analysis of memory, place, and nostalgia, Trigg argues that the decline of reason enables a critique of progress to emerge. In this ambitious work, Trigg aims to reassess the direction of progress by situating it in a spatial context. In doing so, he applies his critique of rationality to modern ruins. The derelict factory, abandoned asylum, and urban alleyway all become allies in Trigg's attack on a fixed image of temporality and progress. The Aesthetics of Decay offers a model of post-rational aesthetics in which spatial order is challenged by an affirmative ethics of ruin.

    Angaben zur beteiligten Person Lessenich: Prof. Dr. Rolf P. Lessenich lehrte vor seiner Emeritierung am Institut für Anglistik, Amerikanistik und Keltologie der Universität Bonn. Er ist auch Romanist, Komparatist und Mitbegründer des Bonner Centre for the Classical Tradition. Die positive, platonische Romantik hatte eine dunkle, negative Kehrseite: den romantischen Desillusionismus einschließlich des »Gothic« und des dämonischen Doppelgänger-Motivs. So wurde der von der Classical Tradition überkommene Konflikt von Platon und Pyrrhon, Fundamentalismus und Skeptizismus, Optimismus und Pessimismus weitergetragen. Lord Byron war die meist gehörte, doch bei weitem nicht die einzige Stimme des romantischen Desillusionismus in Europa. Diese vergleichende Studie einer Vielzahl skeptizistischer Stimmen in vielen Sprachen zeigt, wie traditionelle pyrrhonische Argumente den Jahrzehnten der romantischen Bewegung angepasst wurden – eine subversive Gegenströmung, auch zum späteren Viktorianismus, die sich in der Literatur von Décadence und Fin de Siècle wieder Bahn brach.; Platonic Romanticism had a dark underside from its inception: Romantic Disillusionism, encompassing the Gothic and the new demonic doppelganger. The Classical Tradition’s conflict between Plato and Pyrrho, foundationalism and scepticism, optimism and pessimism was thus continued. Lord Byron’s was the most listened-to and echoed voice of Romantic Disillusionism in Europe, though by far not the only one. This comparative study of a multiplicity of sceptical English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Polish, and Czech voices shows how traditional Pyrrhonic arguments were updated to suit the decades of the Romantic Movement, surviving as a subversive countercurrent to later Victorianism and resurging in the literature of the Decadence and Fin de Siècle.

Around 1900, the history of European ideas shows a growing fascination with the contrast between myth and monotheism, between the many gods and the one God. In the mirror of this ancient topos, fundamental questions of modernity are reflected: the relationship between immanence and transcendence, heteronomy and freedom, tolerance and dogma. Matthias Löwe's study reconstructs the modern discourse on myth and monotheism and its aesthetic potential, which is released especially in the early 20th century, in Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Gerhart Hauptmann, Arnold Schönberg, and Thomas Mann. In aestheticizing myth and monotheism, these intellectuals are not pursuing interests in the history of religion. Rather, in the guise of literary myths or biblical stories, they struggle to interpret modernity.
