Heterosexuality in contemporary novels, re-examined using the frameworks of feminism and queer theory

Drawing on feminist and queer theories of sex, gender and sexuality, this study focuses on female identities at odds with heterosexual norms. In particular, it explores narratives in which the conventional equation between heterosexuality, reproductive sexuality and female identity is questioned.

    - A timely exploration of the dynamic relationship between feminist and queer theory

    - Insightful close readings of acclaimed novels, including Jeffrey Eugenides' Middlesex, Zoë Heller's Notes on a Scandal, A. M. Homes' The End of Alice, Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go, Alan Warner's Morvern Callar and Sarah Waters' Affinity

    - Topics range from spinsterhood and intergenerational sexuality to transgender and human cloning

Pynchon and Philosophy radically reworks our readings of Thomas Pynchon alongside the theoretical perspectives of Wittgenstein, Foucault and Adorno. Rigorous yet readable, Pynchon and Philosophy seeks to recover philosophical readings of Pynchon that work harmoniously, rather than antagonistically, resulting in a wholly fresh approach. Dr. Martin Paul Eve is a lecturer in literature at the University of Lincoln, UK. In addition to editing the open access journal of Pynchon Studies, Orbit, he has work published or forthcoming in Textual Practise, Neo-Victorian Studies, C21, Pynchon Notes and several edited collections. The article calls attention to how snow and ice are embodied as grievable entities in Nordic 21st century climate change fiction, arguing that contemporary fiction is a valuable apparatus for processing ecological mourning. The author draws theoretically on Ashlee Cunsolo’s work on ecological grief, while the overarching research question is how scientific warnings about global warming and shrinking cryosphere are dealt with emotionally and aesthetically in Nordic literature. A comparative analysis of the Scandinavian cli-fi novels Den afskyelige (»The abominable «, 2016), written by Danish Charlotte Weitze, and Steffen tar sin del av ansvaret (»Steffen takes his share of the responsibility«, 2009), by Norwegian Christian Valeur forms the backbone of the article. In both novels, the young protagonists are realizing that snow is a scarce resource, close to disappearing. Facing this fact arouses interrelated emotions of grief, guilt and confusion, but also gallows humour, gratitude and pride. From these observations, the author argues that fiction may play a crucial role for a deeper understanding of the emotional complex of climate anxiety, grief and resilience.
