    When listeners talk about their listening experiences, they often refer to music as if it were a narrative. But can music actually tell a story? Can music be narrative? Traditionally, narrativity is associated with verbal and visual texts, and the mere possibility of musical narrativity is highly debated. In this study, Vincent Meelberg demonstrates that music can indeed be narrative, and that the study of musical narrativity can be very productive. Moreover, Meelberg even makes a stronger claim by contending that contemporary music, too, can be narrative. More specifically, Meelberg suggests considering contemporary musical narratives as metanarratives, i.e. narratives that tell the story of the process of narrativization. Wanneer luisteraars over hun luisterervaringen praten, refereren ze vaak aan muziek alsof het een verhaal is. Maar kan muziek wel een verhaal vertellen? Kan muziek narratief zijn? Traditioneel wordt narrativiteit geassocieerd met verbale en visuele teksten en wordt er betwijfeld of een muzikale variant zelfs maar kan bestaan. In deze studie beargumenteert Vincent Meelberg dat muziek wel degelijk een verhaal kan vertellen, en dat de bestudering van muzikale narrativiteit zeer productief is. Meer specifiek stelt Meelberg voor om hedendaagse muzikale verhalen te beschouwen als metaverhalen, dus als verhalen die het verhaal van het proces van narrativizering vertellen.

    Elvis, David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Marilyn Manson, Frank Zappa, Madonna: Die Geschichte der Popmusik ist immer auch eine Geschichte der Bühnenshows. Das Pop-Konzert als para-theatrale Form erarbeitet als erste Veröffentlichung eine Grundlage zum Verständnis dieser lang vernachlässigten Form des Theatralen. Grundlegend untersucht werden die verschiedenen Bühnenräume des Pop, Gestik und Proxemik, der performative Gehalt der Stimme und die Formen der Interaktion mit dem Publikum. Anhand der Analyse ausgewählter Bühnenshows wird eine Typologie der wichtigsten Figuren der Pop-Bühne erstellt. Hierbei werden nicht nur historische Entwicklungen deutlich, sondern auch ästhetisch singuläre, für die Pop-Geschichte wichtige Künstler vorgestellt. Ein eigenes Kapitel beschäftigt sich mit Pop-Künstlerinnen und spezifischen Entwürfen weiblicher Rollen. Am Beispiel der Rock-Oper wird deutlich, wie die Umsetzung dramatischer Makrostrukturen im Rahmen eines Pop-Konzertes funktioniert. Fachpublikum wird ein systematischer Einblick in einen wissenschaftlich kaum erschlossenen Bereich gegeben. Kulturjournalisten finden hier Orientierungshilfen und Inspiration für die tägliche Rezensionsarbeit

    Are artists and cultural institutions cultural translators? Which part do concepts such as that of trans-culturality play? The contributions collected in this volume focus on the subject of (trans-)cultural translation and build a bridge between art and the cultural sector, the so-called "cultural turn" being just as relevant as the findings of the latest studies concerning the areas of activity in the cultural sector and management. Besides trans-cultural phenomena in fine arts, music, literature and theater, the authors explore current issues of cultural education at festivals, in museums, theaters, libraries, concert and opera halls. In conclusion, the focus is on processes of cultural exchange and (inter)national cultural managements that also require their players to develop modified thought patterns.     Sind Künstler_innen und Kultureinrichtungen kulturelle Übersetzer? Welche Rolle spielen Konzepte wie jenes der »Transkulturalität«?Die Beiträge des Bandes stellen das Thema der (trans-)kulturellen Übersetzung in den Mittelpunkt und schlagen eine Brücke zwischen Kunst und Kulturbetrieb. Dafür ist der sogenannte »Cultural Turn« ebenso relevant wie die Ergebnisse neuester Studien aus den Handlungsfeldern des Kulturbetriebs und -managements. Neben transkulturellen Phänomenen in bildender Kunst, Musik, Literatur und Theater widmen sich die Beiträger_innen aktuellen Fragestellungen der Kulturvermittlung auf Festivals, in Museen, Theatern, Bibliotheken, Konzert- und Opernsälen. The Pop Concert as a Para-theatrical Form is the first systematic study to concern itself with this area of research. It deals with the foundations for understanding the particular aesthetics of the pop stage. Using the most important artistes and an analysis of their appearances, an overview is provided of the way certain types of figure have developed. Elvis, David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Marilyn Manson, Frank Zappa, Madonna: Die Geschichte der Pop-Musik ist immer auch eine Geschichte der Bühnenshows. Das Pop-Konzert als para-theatrale Form beschäftigt sich zum ersten Mal systematisch mit diesem Forschungsbereich. Vermittelt werden Grundlagen zum Verständnis der speziellen Ästhetik der Pop-Bühne. Anhand der wichtigsten Künstler und der Analyse ihrer Auftritte wird ein überblick über die Entwicklung bestimmter Figurentypen gegeben.

    Are artists and cultural institutions cultural translators? Which part do concepts such as that of trans-culturality play? The contributions collected in this volume focus on the subject of (trans-)cultural translation and build a bridge between art and the cultural sector, the so-called "cultural turn" being just as relevant as the findings of the latest studies concerning the areas of activity in the cultural sector and management. Besides trans-cultural phenomena in fine arts, music, literature and theater, the authors explore current issues of cultural education at festivals, in museums, theaters, libraries, concert and opera halls.     Are artists and cultural institutions cultural translators? Which part do concepts such as that of trans-culturality play? The contributions collected in this volume focus on the subject of (trans-)cultural translation and build a bridge between art and the cultural sector, the so-called "cultural turn" being just as relevant as the findings of the latest studies concerning the areas of activity in the cultural sector and management. Besides trans-cultural phenomena in fine arts, music, literature and theater, the authors explore current issues of cultural education at festivals, in museums, theaters, libraries, concert and opera halls. In conclusion, the focus is on processes of cultural exchange and (inter)national cultural managements that also require their players to develop modified thought patterns Sind Künstler und Kultureinrichtungen kulturelle Übersetzer? Welche Rolle spielen Konzepte wie jenes der Transkulturalität? Die Beiträge des Bandes stellen das Thema der (trans-)kulturellen Übersetzung in den Mittelpunkt und schlagen eine Brücke zwischen Kunst und Kulturbetrieb. Dafür ist der sogenannte Cultural Turn ebenso relevant wie neueste Erkenntnisse aus Kulturbetrieb und -management.     Interrogeant les fondements du concert dit " de musique classique ", cet ouvrage propose une poétique née de la considération d'un tableau. L'enquête menée sur Le Concert de Nicolas de Staël peint à Antibes en 1955, y introduit une réflexion sur la nature du concert, sa fonction et l'initiative qui le fonde. Un temps marqué par le sceau de l'inachèvement et la disparition du peintre, l'ultime tableau de Nicolas de Staël vit aujourd'hui, sur les cimaises du Musée Picasso d'Antibes et dans de très nombreuses reproductions, indépendamment de la circonstance qui l'a vu naître. La genèse de cette toile, néanmoins, interroge d'autant plus qu'elle fut secrète, isolée, et rattachée à l'audition historiquement documentée de deux concerts du Domaine musical. Couleurs, formes, abstraction et figuration donnent alors corps à une interrogation plus vaste sur la définition même du concert : quel est le sujet de ce tableau, que signifie le mot concert ?

Elvis, David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Marilyn Manson, Frank Zappa, Madonna: Die Geschichte der Pop-Musik ist immer auch eine Geschichte der Bühnenshows. Das Pop-Konzert als para-theatrale Form beschäftigt sich zum ersten Mal systematisch mit diesem Forschungsbereich. Vermittelt werden Grundlagen zum Verständnis der speziellen Ästhetik der Pop-Bühne. Anhand der wichtigsten Künstler und der Analyse ihrer Auftritte wird ein überblick über die Entwicklung bestimmter Figurentypen gegeben.

    Interrogeant les fondements du concert dit " de musique classique ", cet ouvrage propose une poétique née de la considération d'un tableau. L'enquête menée sur Le Concert de Nicolas de Staël peint à Antibes en 1955, y introduit une réflexion sur la nature du concert, sa fonction et l'initiative qui le fonde. Un temps marqué par le sceau de l'inachèvement et la disparition du peintre, l'ultime tableau de Nicolas de Staël vit aujourd'hui, sur les cimaises du Musée Picasso d'Antibes et dans de très nombreuses reproductions, indépendamment de la circonstance qui l'a vu naître. La genèse de cette toile, néanmoins, interroge d'autant plus qu'elle fut secrète, isolée, et rattachée à l'audition historiquement documentée de deux concerts du Domaine musical. Couleurs, formes, abstraction et figuration donnent alors corps à une interrogation plus vaste sur la définition même du concert : quel est le sujet de ce tableau, que signifie le mot concert ?
