    Die Conan-Erzählungen von Robert E. Howard können als eindeutige Produkte der Populärkultur gelten. Sie sind Teil einer als Massenprodukt ausgelegten Heftreihe mit einer ökonomisch ausgerichteten Verkaufsstrategie. Unter diesem Gesichtspunkt stellt das Bild des Nordens, das Howard als Herkunftsort seines Protagonisten Conan entwirft, nichts weiter dar, als den Versuch, durch Rückgriff auf bekannte Schemata eine möglichst große Leserschaft ansprechen zu können: Der Norden in Howards Welt des Hyborian Age ist kalt und unwirtlich, bewohnt von blonden und zähen Hünen, die zivilisatorischer Ursprünglichkeit frönen. Die Andersartigkeit des Nordens und seiner Bewohner liefert zudem den Hintergrund für Conans speziellen Charakter. Unarguably, Robert E. Howard's Conan-stories are products of popular culture. They are part of a pulp series that focuses on mass production and economic sales strategy. Taking this into account, it becomes obvious that Howard’s fictional space of the North as Conan's place of origin refers to known clichés and concepts in order to attract a large body of readers. The North in Howard's world of the Hyborian Age is cold and unfriendly, populated by blond and tough warriors who live under pre-civilized, barbaric conditions. The otherness of the North and its inhabitants serves as the background for Conan's special character.
