"This book explains the concept, framework, implementation, and evaluation of controlled document authoring in this age of translation technologies. Machine translation (MT) is routinely used in many situations, by companies, governments and individuals. Despite recent advances, MT tools are still known to be imperfect, sometimes producing critical errors. To enhance the performance of MT, researchers and language practitioners have developed controlled languages that impose restrictions on the form or length of the source language text. However, a fundamental, persisting problem is that both current MT systems and controlled languages deal only with the sentence as the unit of processing. To be effective, controlled languages must be contextualised at the document level, consequently enabling MT to generate outputs appropriate for their functional context within the target document. With a specific focus on Japanese municipal documents, this book establishes a framework for controlled document authoring by integrating various research strands including document formalisation, controlled language, and terminology management. It then presents the development and evaluation of an authoring support system, MuTUAL, that is designed to help non-professional writers create well-organised documents that are both readable and translatable. The book provides useful insights for researchers and practitioners interested in translation technology, technical writing, and natural language processing applications."

Graphics and diagrams are important in linguistics: they visualise analysis findings, illustrate theoretical concepts and make it possible to analyse data in the first place. But how do they influence the generation of insights? What effect do they have on linguistic data? This book examines diagrammatical practices in linguistics and develops a methodology of visual linguistics.

Empirical approaches based on qualitative or quantitative methods of corpus linguistics have become a central paradigm within linguistics. The series takes account of this fact and provides a platform for approaches within synchronous linguistics as well as interdisciplinary works with a linguistic focus which devise new ways of working empirically and develop new data-based methods and theoretical models for empirical linguistic analyses.

The employment of printing techniques as cost-effective methods to fabricate low cost,

flexible, disposable and sustainable solar cells is intimately dependent on the substrate

properties and the adequate electronic devices to be powered by them. Among such

devices, there is currently a growing interest in the development of user-oriented and

multipurpose systems for intelligent packaging or on-site medical diagnostics, which

would greatly benefit from printable solar cells as their energy source for autonomous

    operation.

This chapter first describes and analyzes different types of cellulose-based substrates for

flexible and cost effective optoelectronic and bio devices to be powered by printed solar

cells. Cellulose is one of the most promising platforms for green recyclable electronics

and it is fully compatible with large-scale printing techniques, although some critical

requirements must be addressed. Paper substrates exist in many forms. From common

office paper, to packaging cardboard used in the food industry, or nanoscale engineered

cellulose (e.g. bacterial cellulose). However, it is the structure and content of paper that

determines its end use. Secondly, proof-of-concept of optoelectronic and bio devices produced

by inkjet printing are described and show the usefulness of solar cells as a power

source or as a chemical reaction initiator for sensors.

How and in which direction(s) is research in Ibero-Romance historical linguistics evolving? Now that the initial enthusiasm for the possibilities of digital corpora has worn off, the essays gathered in this volume reflect a more critical approach: corpora are being refined, while researchers discuss not only how reliable and representative they can be, but also ways in which to tackle certain gaps of the discipline.

This book approaches its topic from three angles: diachronic semantics, a panorama of science and scientific writing in Latin from antiquity up to the present, and linguistic forays that try to demarcate scientific Latin from other registers and to identify groups of different language use among the authors introduced in the panorama. The transition of science from Greek through Latin to the modern vernaculars is especially emphasised.

Main description: Proceeding on the basis of the collocation theory advanced by British functionalism, a language analysis model is developed for the lexical level which is usable in the context of computer-aided language processing. The working assumption is that traditional knowledge about language-external entities is not an absolutely necessary condition for the identification and characterization of language units. The analysis of formatives and their collocative behaviour in actual texts is assumed to be sufficient, particularly in connection with the frequency and statistical significance of their co-occurence. Maschine-aided language analysis procedures of the kind envisaged here embed language units derived from maschine-readable corpora into a lexical network, thus achieving a characterization of those units which is satisfactory enough to make it suitable for use in other language-processing tasks

This white paper is part of a series that promotes knowledge about language technology and its potential. It addresses educators, journalists, politicians, language communities and others. The availability and use of language technology in Europe varies between languages. Consequently, the actions that are required to further support research and development of language technologies also differ for each language. The required actions depend on many factors, such as the complexity of a given language and the size of its community. META-NET, a Network of Excellence funded by the European Commission, has conducted an analysis of current language resources and technologies. This analysis focused on the 23 official European languages as well as other important national and regional languages in Europe. The results of this analysis suggest that there are many significant research gaps for each language. A more detailed expert analysis and assessment of the current situation will help maximise the impact of additional research and minimize any risks. META-NET consists of 54 research centres from 33 countries that are working with stakeholders from commercial businesses, government agencies, industry, research organisations, software companies, technology providers and European universities. Together, they are creating a common technology vision while developing a strategic research agenda that shows how language technology applications can address any research gaps by 2020

Together, they are creating a common technology vision while developing a strategic research agenda that shows how language technology applications can address any research gaps by 2020.

Semantic fields are lexically coherent – the words they contain co-occur in texts. In this book the authors introduce and define semantic domains, a computational model for lexical semantics inspired by the theory of semantic fields. Semantic domains allow us to exploit domain features for texts, terms and concepts, and they can significantly boost the performance of natural-language processing systems. Semantic domains can be derived from existing lexical resources or can be acquired from corpora in an unsupervised manner. They also have the property of interlinguality, and they can be used to relate terms in different languages in multilingual application scenarios. The authors give a comprehensive explanation of the computational model, with detailed chapters on semantic domains, domain models, and applications of the technique in text categorization, word sense disambiguation, and cross-language text categorization. This book is suitable for researchers and graduate students in computational linguistics.
