    Debates about the possibility of an open culture – or indeed about the possibility of an open debate about the openness of culture – often turn on questions of standards. But since no benchmark can be absolute, judgement is a proliferation of comparisons. Through a series of case studies in everyday and academic comparison (literature, history, politics, philosophy), Haun Saussy calls out the typical vices of comparison and proposes ways to unseat them. For however much it is abused, distorted, and manipulated, comparison retains an essential link to the idea of justice.

Wie sich eine solche Individualität durch das Sich-Selbst-Vergleichen auf historisch jeweils unterschiedliche Weise herstellt, wird anhand von Autor*innen wie Petrus Abaelard, Guibert von Nogent, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Bertha von Suttner, Walter Benjamin und Roland Barthes analysiert.

    Practices of comparing shape how we perceive, organize, and change the world. Supposedly innocent, practices of comparing play a decisive role in forming categories, boundaries, and hierarchies; but they can also give an impetus to question and change such structures. Like almost no other human practice, comparing pervades all social, political, economic, and cultural spheres. This volume outlines the program of a new research agenda that places comparative practices at the center of an interdisciplinary exploration. Its contributions combine case studies with overarching systematic considerations. They show what insights can be gained and which further questions arise when one makes a seemingly trivial practice - comparing - the subject of in-depth research.

    Long description: Die wissenschaftliche Zusammenarbeit von China und Deutschland liefert in Zeiten gesellschaftlicher Transformation ein breites Potenzial an innovationsfähigen und transkulturellen Forschungsansätzen. Die Beiträge des Bandes eruieren hierzu zum einen bildungs- und sozialwissenschaftliche Fragestellungen, die die Rolle von Bildung vor dem Hintergrund kritischer Analyse und mit der Perspektive auf Gestaltung und Partizipation thematisieren. Zum anderen wird interdisziplinär erörtert, wie komparative Perspektiven in der Forschung entwickelt und wie Kooperationen und der Umgang in diesen gestaltet werden können. Dabei wird auch das Thema China-Kompetenz diskutiert und eine breite Kooperationsperspektive eröffnet Biographical note: Steffi Robak, geb. 1970, hat an der Leibniz-Universität Hannover die Professur für Bildung im Erwachsenenalter inne. Im Rahmen ihrer Forschungstätigkeit beschäftigt sie sich u.a. kulturvergleichend mit der Entwicklung der Weiterbildungssysteme und ihrer Organisationen sowie transkultureller Bildung. Sie leitet das Institut für Berufspädagogik und Erwachsenenbildung der Leibniz-Universität Hannover und wirkt als Vorstandsvorsitzende des Leibniz-Konfuzius-Instituts Hannover (LKIH). Boris Zizek, geb. 1976, hat an der Leibniz-Universität Hannover die Professur für Erziehungswissenschaft mit dem Schwerpunkt Sozialisations- und Adoleszenzforschung inne. Er lehrt und forscht an der interdisziplinären Schnittstelle zwischen Erziehungswissenschaft und Soziologie und fungiert als geschäftsführende Leitung des Instituts für Erziehungswissenschaft an der Leibniz-Universität Hannover sowie als Board-Mitglied im Leibniz-Konfuzius-Institut Hannover (LKIH). Chunchun Hu (Dr. phil.), geb. 1972, ist Associate Professor am Institute for German Studies an der Tongji-Universität in Shanghai, China. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind deutsche Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts, deutsche Kultur, Public Diplomacy und deutsch-chinesische Kulturbeziehungen. Er leitet als stellvertretender Direktor das Deutschlandforschungszentrum sowie das Zentrum für chinesisch-deutschen gesellschaftlich-kulturellen Austausch der Tongji-Universität und wirkt als stellvertretender Präsident des Aufsichtsrats des Leibniz-Konfuzius-Instituts Hannover (LKIH)

Die Beiträge des Bandes eruieren hierzu zum einen bildungs- und sozialwissenschaftliche Fragestellungen, die die Rolle von Bildung vor dem Hintergrund kritischer Analyse und mit der Perspektive auf Gestaltung und Partizipation thematisieren. Zum anderen wird interdisziplinär erörtert, wie komparative Perspektiven in der Forschung entwickelt und wie Kooperationen und der Umgang in diesen gestaltet werden können. Diese erreichen nicht nur ein akademisches Nischenpublikum, sondern erzielen insgesamt hohe Zuschauer"en. Die Beiträge des Bandes analysieren, wie der Gegenstand Politik in den Serien aufgegriffen und als Material für ihre auf Unterhaltung ausgerichteten Erzählungen aufgearbeitet wird. Über die Auseinandersetzung mit popkulturellen Produkten zeigen sie, wie politische Bilder in populären Filmen und Serien konstruiert und reproduziert werden und wie diese sich auf Wahrnehmungen und Vorstellungen von Politik auswirken.
