    What are emotions, where do they originate and how are they brought into being? While from antiquity to early modernity, affects or passions were mostly conceived of as external physiological forces which act upon a passive subject, modern conceptions generally locate emotions within the subject. Drawing on the dichotomy of "interiority / exteriority" as a complex interdependent relationship, they mostly envision emotions as interior processes. Contemporary conceptions of emotion from such different fields as human geography, art history and cognitive sciences recently started to challenge this notion of internal emotions by developing alternative descriptions of externalized emotion. This book reevaluates premodern, modern and contemporary conceptions of affects, passions and emotion by analyzing various historical manifestations of the discourse on emotion. Unlike most previous research, which - especially in the German tradition - often focused exclusively on the rise of the modern (Romantic) interiority without paying attention to the underlying dichotomy of "interiority / exteriority", this study aims to explore the historical preconditions, the internal logic and the possible shortcomings that inform our thinking on emotion

    Das illustrierte Flugblatt des späteren 16. Jahrhunderts lässt tief in die Formen und Strategien der öffentlichen Kommunikation dieser Jahre der Frühen Neuzeit blicken. Es zeugt davon, wie auf der Basis zeitgenössischen Wissens Wirklichkeiten und Identitäten - in diesem Fall: konfessionelle - konstruiert und etabliert wurden. Nicht zuletzt durch seine unlösbare Kombination von Sprache und Bild ist das illustrierte Flugblatt ein relevanter Gegenstand für eine kulturbezogen arbeitende Sprachgeschichtsforschung, die danach fragt, wie sich Menschen einer bestimmten Zeit und Gesellschaft ihre Welt mittels sprachlicher und nicht-sprachlicher Zeichensysteme deuteten und erklärten. Um die komplexen sprachlichen und bildlichen Formen der Bedeutungskonstitution im Flugblatt zu erfassen, werden in der Untersuchung Methoden verwendet, die im Wesentlichen der lexikalischen (kognitiven) Semantik, der Textlinguistik und der linguistischen Diskursanalyse entstammen. Dort wurden sie zur rein sprachbasierten Inhaltsanalyse entwickelt, sie lassen sich aber unter den Prämissen einer holistischen Framesemantikkonzeption auch zur Analyse semiotisch komplexer Texte einsetzen

    This book develops a modern evolutionary anthropological theory of the cognitive conditions for explanatory descriptions of the world. Within the broad framework of processual hermeneutics, this monograph studies rationality by investigating what are the fundamental cognitive mechanisms required for the cultural development of rational constructions. It analyses the basic cognitive competences through which the human being connects categories and operations in a manner that allows it to orient itself in the world. If both understanding and explaining are forms of human-specific orientation, what does asking the question “how” imply cognitively? This monograph focuses therefore on the human-specific array of cognitive mechanisms, here referred to as enarrativity.

    What are emotions, where do they originate and how are they brought into being? While from antiquity to early modernity, affects or passions were mostly conceived of as external physiological forces which act upon a passive subject, modern conceptions generally locate emotions within the subject. Drawing on the dichotomy of "interiority / exteriority" as a complex interdependent relationship, they mostly envision emotions as interior processes. Contemporary conceptions of emotion from such different fields as human geography, art history and cognitive sciences recently started to challenge this notion of internal emotions by developing alternative descriptions of externalized emotion. This book reevaluates premodern, modern and contemporary conceptions of affects, passions and emotion by analyzing various historical manifestations of the discourse on emotion. Unlike most previous research, which - especially in the German tradition - often focused exclusively on the rise of the modern (Romantic) interiority without paying attention to the underlying dichotomy of "interiority / exteriority", this study aims to explore the historical preconditions, the internal logic and the possible shortcomings that inform our thinking on emotion

    Das illustrierte Flugblatt des späteren 16. Jahrhunderts lässt tief in die Formen und Strategien der öffentlichen Kommunikation dieser Jahre der Frühen Neuzeit blicken. Es zeugt davon, wie auf der Basis zeitgenössischen Wissens Wirklichkeiten und Identitäten - in diesem Fall: konfessionelle - konstruiert und etabliert wurden. Nicht zuletzt durch seine unlösbare Kombination von Sprache und Bild ist das illustrierte Flugblatt ein relevanter Gegenstand für eine kulturbezogen arbeitende Sprachgeschichtsforschung, die danach fragt, wie sich Menschen einer bestimmten Zeit und Gesellschaft ihre Welt mittels sprachlicher und nicht-sprachlicher Zeichensysteme deuteten und erklärten. Um die komplexen sprachlichen und bildlichen Formen der Bedeutungskonstitution im Flugblatt zu erfassen, werden in der Untersuchung Methoden verwendet, die im Wesentlichen der lexikalischen (kognitiven) Semantik, der Textlinguistik und der linguistischen Diskursanalyse entstammen. Dort wurden sie zur rein sprachbasierten Inhaltsanalyse entwickelt, sie lassen sich aber unter den Prämissen einer holistischen Framesemantikkonzeption auch zur Analyse semiotisch komplexer Texte einsetzen

    The written genre of the religious pamphlet stands out as a deeply characteristic form of public communication in the early modern period, not least on account of its inseparable combination of language and images. This study undertakes an analysis of semiotically complex religious pamphlets from the late 16th century, thereby making a contribution to research in linguistic history that is culturally oriented.     This book develops a modern evolutionary anthropological theory of the cognitive conditions for explanatory descriptions of the world. Within the broad framework of processual hermeneutics, this monograph studies rationality by investigating what are the fundamental cognitive mechanisms required for the cultural development of rational constructions. It analyses the basic cognitive competences through which the human being connects categories and operations in a manner that allows it to orient itself in the world. If both understanding and explaining are forms of human-specific orientation, what does asking the question “how” imply cognitively? This monograph focuses therefore on the human-specific array of cognitive mechanisms, here referred to as enarrativity.
