    What were the medieval stylistic, aesthetic, and literary conventions that Chancer drew upon and knew that his audience would understand? In this rich study Mr. Robertson has included 118 illustrations-of medieval sculpture, cathedral interiors, illuminated manuscripts, paintings, ornamental devices and decorations-to show how these conventions affected the visual arts of Chaucer’s time. Special attention is directed to fundamental differences between medieval and modern attitudes toward poetry, and to the significance of these differences for an approach to medieval art. By placing Chaucer fully in his own time, Mr. Robertson establishes new perspectives for understanding Chaucer’s poetry.     A resolution to the vexed problem whether a troubadour's love is erotic or spiritual is offered by Paolo Cherchi through a new reading of Andreas Capellanus' De Amore (written around 1186-1196). He suggests that Andreas, using a rhetorical strategy that creates ambiguity, condemns courtly love because its claim that passion generates virtue is untenable and deceitful. Although Andreas grasped the core of the courtly love 'system,' namely, the relation between passion and ethics, he failed to consider the notion of mezura, that courtly virtue through which troubadours transformed nature into culture, and erotic passion into social discourse.Cherchi offers an innovative interpretation and a close reading of selected poems. He traces the history of Provençal lyric poetry, highlighting some of the significant personalities and movements.

    As a tribute to the superb teaching and exemplary literary criticism of this eminent Yale scholar, the majority of these essays deal with thematic, textual, and prosodic issues in Old English poetry, seven of them providing a valuable reassessment of some of the perennial problems of Beowulf criticism: the implications of its metaphysical and social systems as well as its rhetorical and imagistic structures; and especially the recurrent need for a careful re-examination of the text and a return to the manuscript evidence. These contributions add significantly to the debate over the meaning of the tragic element of Beowulf and to the better understanding of the character of its hero. The poetic literature is further represented by a new evaluation of the central literary problems of the Exodus, a reinterpretation of the puzzling Wulf and Eadwacer, and philological and syntactical examinations of Maldon and the Phoenix. Other interests of Professor Pope are reflected in two metrical analyses and a thorough lexicographical survey of Old English prosodic terminology, a painstaking study of the chapter-headings in the Old English Bede, and an essay which brilliantly establishes the experience of a hitherto unknown Ælfric manuscript.

    Dieser Teilband verfolgt die Entwicklung von den zwanziger Jahren des 13. Jahrhunderts, in denen mit Wolfram und Walther die letzten Dichter aus der »Blütezeit« der mhd. Literatur gestorben sind, bis gegen 1280/90. In diesem Zeitraum wandeln sich die alten Gattungen, und es entstehen wichtige neue: Rechtsprosa, Prosa der Geschichtsschreibung, geistliches Schauspiel, episch-didaktische Formen der Versliteratur. Die Darstellung macht deutlich, daß diese Wandlungen und Neuansätze weitgehend mit zwei großen gesellschaftlichen bzw. politischen Umwälzungsprozessen zusammenhängen: zum einen führt die Umstrukturierung der Herrschaftsorganisation vom alten Personenverbandsstaat zum territorialen Flächenstaat modernen Zuschnitts (»neue Staatlichkeit«); zum anderen findet die Erneuerung des religiösen Lebens weithin sichtbaren Ausdruck in der Gründung der Bettelorden der Franziskaner und Dominikaner (»neue Frömmigkeit«).

Die Studie beschäftigt sich mit der Wiederentdeckung und Erschließung dieses Werkes in der Zeit zwischen 1500 und 1830. Im Zentrum stehen die Wiederentdeckungen der Überlieferungsträger sowie Textausgaben und interpretatorische Bemühungen um das Werk. Das Buch leistet damit an einem konkreten Fallbeispiel einen Beitrag zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte der Germanistik in der frühen Neuzeit. Otfried of Weissenburg’s Evangelienbuch [Book of the Gospels] written in Old High German and completed between 863 and 871 is one of the most significant literary works of the Carolingian era. The present study is concerned with the rediscovery and analysis of this work in the period from 1500 to 1830. The study focuses on the rediscoveries of the actual manuscripts together with editions of the text and efforts to interpret the work. Thus the book uses an actual case study to further the history of German Studies in the Early Modern Age.     In Heroic Sagas and Ballads, Stephen A. Mitchell examines the world of the medieval Icelandic legendary sagas and their legacy in Scandinavia. Central to his argument is the view that these heroic texts should be studied in the light of the later Icelandic Middle Ages rather than that of the Viking age, although the stories, the tellers, and the audiences are clearly concerned with exactly this period of Scandinavian history.Viewing these sagas as the products of highly diverse forms of inspiration and creation-some oral, some written-Mitchell explores their aesthetic and social dimensions, demonstrating their function both as entertainment and as a literature with a more serious purpose, one with deep roots in Nordic literary consciousness. The traditions that these sagas relate possessed an importance beyond the temporal and geographical confines of medieval Iceland, and Heroic Sagas and Ballads considers the process by which these heroic materials were subsequently recast as metrical romances in Iceland and as ballads throughout the rest of Scandinavia. It is ultimately concerned with much more than just those stories that inspired such modern writers as Richard Wagner and H.     Dieser Teilband verfolgt die Entwicklung von den zwanziger Jahren des 13. Jahrhunderts, in denen mit Wolfram und Walther die letzten Dichter aus der »Blütezeit« der mhd. Literatur gestorben sind, bis gegen 1280/90. In diesem Zeitraum wandeln sich die alten Gattungen, und es entstehen wichtige neue: Rechtsprosa, Prosa der Geschichtsschreibung, geistliches Schauspiel, episch-didaktische Formen der Versliteratur. Die Darstellung macht deutlich, daß diese Wandlungen und Neuansätze weitgehend mit zwei großen gesellschaftlichen bzw. politischen Umwälzungsprozessen zusammenhängen: zum einen führt die Umstrukturierung der Herrschaftsorganisation vom alten Personenverbandsstaat zum territorialen Flächenstaat modernen Zuschnitts (»neue Staatlichkeit«); zum anderen findet die Erneuerung des religiösen Lebens weithin sichtbaren Ausdruck in der Gründung der Bettelorden der Franziskaner und Dominikaner (»neue Frömmigkeit«).
