So far, only the Latin text in a critical edition from the year 1948 has been available from the law treaty of the Summa Halensis. With the three-volume publication, a German translation and a commentary on this important work in the transition from early modern to high scholasticism will be presented together with the Latin text for the first time. From a conceptual point of view, this treatise was fundamental in its foundation and development of the different manifestations of the law - as eternal law, natural law, Mosaic law and evangelical law. His extensive interpretation of the Mosaic Law also has concrete references to the world of life and belief, which are revealing for the cultural and social history of this time. Also regarding the turning to the Torah in the current theology and in the context of the interreligious and socio-political discourses over the understanding of the law deserves attention the law council of the Summa Halensis, because he in many respects to the reflection over the function (s) of the law as well as the context of theology and law.

Wonder, Horror, Mystery is a dialogue between two friends, both notable arts critics, that takes the form of a series of letters about movies and religion. One of the friends, J.M. Tyree, is a film critic, creative writer, and agnostic, while the other, Morgan Meis, is a philosophy PhD, art critic, and practicing Catholic. The question of cinema is raised here in a spirit of friendly friction that binds the personal with the critical and the spiritual. What is film? What’s it for? What does it do? Why do we so intensely love or hate films that dare to broach the subjects of the divine and the diabolical? These questions stimulate further thoughts about life, meaning, philosophy, absurdity, friendship, tragedy, humor, death, and God.

The letters focus on three filmmakers who challenged secular assumptions in the late 20th century and early 21st century through various modes of cinematic re-enchantment: Terrence Malick, Lars von Trier, and Krzysztof Kieślowski. The book works backwards in time, giving intensive analysis to Malick’s To The Wonder (2012), Von Trier’s Antichrist (2009), and Kieślowski’s Dekalog (1988), respectively, in each of the book’s three sections. Meis and Tyree discuss the filmmakers and films as well as related ideas about philosophy, theology, and film theory in an accessible but illuminating way. The discussion ranges from the shamelessly intellectual to the embarrassingly personal. Spoiler alert: No conclusions are reached either about God or the movies. Nonetheless, it is a fun ride.

"The T&T Clark Hanbook of Suffering and the Problem of Evil provides an extensive exploration of the theology of theodicy, asking questions such as should all instances of suffering necessarily be understood as evil? Why would an omnipotent and benevolent God allow or perpetrate evil? Is God unable or unwilling to reduce human and non-human suffering on Earth? Does humanity have the capacity to exercise a moral evaluation of God's motives and intentions? Conventional disciplinary boundaries have tended to separate theological approaches to these questions from philosophical ones. This volume aims to overcome these boundaries by including biblical (Part I), historical (Part II), doctrinal (Part III), philosophical (Part IV), and pastoral, interreligious perspectives and alternative intersections (Part V) on theodicy. Authors of this volume include thinkers from analytic and continental traditions, multiple Christian denominations and other religions, and established and younger scholars, providing a full variety of approaches. What unites the essays is an attempt to provide answers to these mentioned questions from the perspective of biblical testimony, historical scholarship, modern theological and philosophical thinking about the concept of God, non-Christian religions, science and the arts. The result is a combination of in-depth analysis and breadth of scope, making this a benchmark work for further studies in the theology of suffering and evil."

Alongside an edition of his manuscript "Elements of the Systems of Aesthetics" (1824), written in German, this volume brings together a number of first translations of the most important aesthetic writings by the Danish philosopher Johan Ludvig Heiberg (1791–1860). An introduction presents Heiberg’s philosophy. His texts played a key role in the history of Danish Hegelianism and had great significance for Søren Kierkegaard.

"This book explores grace as a complex idea and term that at once expresses and connects the most pressing ethical, social, and aesthetic debates of the Italian Renaissance. Grace surfaced time and again in the period's discussions of the individual pursuit of the good life and in the collective quest to determine the best means to a harmonious society. It rose to prominence in theological debates about the soul's salvation and in secular debates about how best to live at court. It was absolutely central to the thinking of Reformation figures such as Erasmus and Luther, and just as central to the Counter-Reformation response. It played a pivotal role in the humanist campaign to develop a shared literary language and it featured prominently in the efforts of writers and artists to express the full potential of mankind. Grace abounded in the Italian Renaissance, yet it was as hard to define as it was ever-present. The courtier and writer, Baldassare Castiglione, for example, described it as that 'certain air' which distinguished excellent courtiers and court ladies from their mediocre counterparts, while his artist friend, Raffaello Sanzio (Raphael), saw it as that quality produced when one conceals the hard work and effort of art behind a veil of nonchalance and ease. This classically-inspired grace was used by many as a way of claiming distinction for themselves and of arguing for the pre-eminence of their chosen disciplines, but it drew criticism too from those who saw it as self-interested and superficial. Quarrels about the meaning and value of grace involved theologians, artists, writers and philosophers and intersected with the most famous debates of the time about language, society and the role of literature and the visual arts. As well as shedding light on what grace meant to those who invoked it, this book aims to trace the interdisciplinary transactions that the word made possible. Each chapter combines consideration of pivotal texts and images with interdisciplinary approaches, examining what grace meant to protagonists of the Italian Renaissance and exploring the correspondence, whether direct or indirect, between them. What emerges is a network of friendships, rivalries, agreements and disputes: a sketch of the interconnections that made the Italian Renaissance"--

"This is a new interpretation of Dostoevsky's novel -The Brothers Karamazov - that scrutinizes it as a performative event (the "polyphony" of the novel) revealing its religious, philosophical, and social meanings through the interplay of mentalités or world-views that constitute an aesthetic whole. This way of discerning the novel's social vision of sobornost' (a unity between harmony and freedom), its vision of hope, and its more subtle sacramental presuppositions, raises Tilley's interpretation beyond the standard "theology and literature" treatments of the novel and interpretations that treat the novel as providing solutions to philosophical problems. Tilley develops Bakhtin's thoughtful analysis of the polyphony of the novel using communication theory and readers/hearer response criticism, and by using Bakhtin's operatic image of polyphony to show the error of taking "faith vs. reason", argues that at the end of the novel, the characters learned to carry on, in a quiet shared commitment to memory and hope"--

[Can't you see what I see? Questions of Moral, Aesthetic and Religious Phenomenology] This interdisciplinary collection combines essays on moral, aesthetic, and religious phenomenology from the academic fields of theology, philosophy, psychology, and music. It aims at identifying and discussing synergies between the respective disciplines. Ethics, aesthetics, and religion all are concerned with "meaning" that cannot be properly described with the help of scientific methods. In questions of the beautiful, the cruel, and the sublime, we seem to have to rely on our receptive capabilities: they are all expressed and understood via sensory perception. How does the incorporation of our experience and daily routines influence the validity of the phenomena as well as the epistemological claim of the disciplines?
