    The twelfth century witnessed the birth of modern Western European literary tradition: major narrative works appeared in both French and in German, founding a literary culture independent of the Latin tradition of the Church and Roman Antiquity. But what gave rise to the sudden interest in and legitimization of literature in these "vulgar tongues"? Until now, the answer has centred on the somewhat nebulous role of new female vernacular readers. Powell argues that a different appraisal of the same evidence offers a window onto something more momentous: not "women readers" but instead a reading act conceived of as female lies behind the polysemic identification of women as the audience of new media in the twelfth century. This woman is at the centre of a re-conception of Christian knowing, a veritable revolution in the mediation of knowledge and truth. By following this figure through detailed readings of key early works, Powell unveils a surprise, a new poetics of the body meant to embrace the capacities of new audiences and viewers of medieval literature and visual art

    Le Lanzelet d’Ulrich von Zatzikhoven, adaptation d’un « livre français » aujourd’hui perdu, a été composé vers 1200. Par sa genèse comme par la diversité de ses facettes, l’œuvre sollicite l’intérêt de plusieurs disciplines. La mise en perspective des différents aspects du Lanzelet reste un chantier largement ouvert. La relation existant entre ce récit, d’une part, et le Lancelot de Chrétien de Troyes comme le Lancelot en prose, d’autre part, demeure déroutante, car si Lanzelet est lui aussi tout dévoué à la reine Guenièvre (Ginovere), son engagement n’est nullement motivé par la passion amoureuse, mais par la solidarité familiale et curiale. Mais plus que cette altérité encore, c’est la dualité du récit pris en lui-même qui frappe. Ce Lancelot-là est à la fois terrien et léger. Terrien parce que les différents épisodes amoureux et conjugaux au centre desquels se trouve le héros sont agencés, hiérarchisés et combinés avec le début (élimination du père par les barons révoltés) et la fin de l’histoire (retour de l’héritier) de façon à suggérer ce que peut être la bonne articulation entre la conduite judicieuse des affaires matrimoniales et la gestion éclairée du patrimoine dans un cadre dynastique. Terrien, le récit l’est aussi par son goût prononcé du dicton. Mais il est également léger : le héros ne s’enracine que progressivement et traverse d’abord l’existence avec une parfaite insouciance. Le récit est riche par ailleurs en citations, en notices de géographie fabuleuse, en historiettes, bref en matière de conversation pour gens de cour. Ce contraste a de quoi intriguer la critique, mais il est pour beaucoup dans le charme de l’œuvre.

    Zuerst wird formal und Epochen übergreifend zwischen nichtliterarischem und literarischem Erzählen unterschieden. Einzelne Gattungen, wie Roman, Novelle, "conte", können nur als spezifisch historische Phänomene beschrieben werden; denn eine "narrative Sequenz" (U. Eco) kann in gereimter, rhythmischer, prosaischer oder dialogischer Form verfasst werden. Aristoteles zufolge ist das Epos von der Tragödie oder dem Drama durch die Länge des Aufbaus zu unterscheiden; im Epos können nacheinander mehrere Episoden einer Geschichte dargestellt werden, die in einem größeren Zeitraum geschehen sein sollen. Die Simultaneität kann also als formales Konzept für die Abgrenzung eines umfangreichen gegenüber einem kürzeren erzählenden Text eingesetzt werden: Ein Erzähler berichtet mehrere Episoden entweder aus ein und derselben Schlacht oder aus ein und demselben Heldenleben oder aus dem Fundus seiner Erinnerung. Die Vielfalt der Stoffe und Motive, die in literarischen Texten als Träger von Normen und Ideen verwendet werden, sind den Themen Gewalt und Liebe zugeordnet worden: Die Attraktivität des literarischen Erzählens liegt wahrscheinlich darin begründet, dass sich die Menschen mit dem Tod und dem Überleben auseinandersetzen müssen.     Cligès was probably written after Erec et Enide and is thus Chrétien de Troyes' second romance. There are several modern English and French translations of the text, but a need has long been felt for a modern German version, particularly as references in Middle High German texts and text fragments indicate that there was at least one Middle High German version. This gap is now filled with the present modern German translation which is published together with the original text in a bilingual edition; this means that the special position which Cligès takes up in more than one respect in the history of the medieval European romance can now form a stronger focus in German Studies. Thus a broader basis is formed both for interdisciplinary medieval studies and for research into the history and theory of the romance. A comprehensive introduction sketches the most important problems in interpreting the work, the present state of research into Cligès in international Romance Studies and its place in the history of the Arthurian romance. With the translation, the introduction, the commentary, and a comprehensive bibliography, this monograph provides an indispensable foundation for future research. It is anticipated that it will meet with wide interest and significantly alter the view taken by German Studies of the history of the romance in medieval Europe Der Cligès ist vermutlich nach Erec et Enide entstanden und somit der zweite Roman von Chrétien de Troyes. Es existieren mehrere moderne Übersetzungen des Romans in englischer und französischer Sprache, aber eine neuhochdeutsche Übersetzung ist seit langem ein Desiderat. Dies gilt umso mehr, als Erwähnungen in mittelhochdeutschen Dichtungen und fragmentarische Zeugnisse darauf hindeuten, dass es (mindestens) eine mittelhochdeutsche Bearbeitung gegeben hat. Mit der nun vorliegenden ersten neuhochdeutschen Übersetzung, die mit dem altfranzösischen Text zusammen in einer zweisprachigen Ausgabe erscheint, wird diese Lücke geschlossen, so dass die Sonderstellung, die der Cligès in mehr als einer Hinsicht in der Geschichte des Romans im europäischen Mittelalter einnimmt, auch von germanistischer Seite stärker in den Blick genommen werden kann. Damit wird die Basis sowohl für eine interdisziplinär arbeitende Mediävistik als auch für Forschungen zur Geschichte und Theorie des Romans erweitert. In einer umfassenden Einführung werden zudem die wichtigsten Interpretationsprobleme, der aktuelle Forschungstand zum Cligès in der internationalen Romanistik und seine Stellung in der Geschichte des Artusromans skizziert. Mit der Übersetzung, der Einleitung, dem Kommentar und einer umfassenden Bibliographie bietet die Monographie eine unverzichtbare Grundlage für weitere Forschungen. Es ist zu erwarten, dass sie auf breites Interesse stoßen und das germanistische Bild über die Geschichte des Romans im europäischen Mittelalter nachhaltig verändern wird

    Cligès was probably written after Erec et Enide and is thus Chrétien de Troyes' second romance. There are several modern English and French translations of the text, but a need has long been felt for a modern German version, particularly as references in Middle High German texts and text fragments indicate that there was at least one Middle High German version. This gap is now filled with the present modern German translation which is published together with the original text in a bilingual edition; this means that the special position which Cligès takes up in more than one respect in the history of the medieval European romance can now form a stronger focus in German Studies. Thus a broader basis is formed both for interdisciplinary medieval studies and for research into the history and theory of the romance. A comprehensive introduction sketches the most important problems in interpreting the work, the present state of research into Cligès in international Romance Studies and its place in the history of the Arthurian romance. With the translation, the introduction, the commentary, and a comprehensive bibliography, this monograph provides an indispensable foundation for future research. It is anticipated that it will meet with wide interest and significantly alter the view taken by German Studies of the history of the romance in medieval Europe Der Cligès ist vermutlich nach Erec et Enide entstanden und somit der zweite Roman von Chrétien de Troyes. Es existieren mehrere moderne Übersetzungen des Romans in englischer und französischer Sprache, aber eine neuhochdeutsche Übersetzung ist seit langem ein Desiderat. Dies gilt umso mehr, als Erwähnungen in mittelhochdeutschen Dichtungen und fragmentarische Zeugnisse darauf hindeuten, dass es (mindestens) eine mittelhochdeutsche Bearbeitung gegeben hat. Mit der nun vorliegenden ersten neuhochdeutschen Übersetzung, die mit dem altfranzösischen Text zusammen in einer zweisprachigen Ausgabe erscheint, wird diese Lücke geschlossen, so dass die Sonderstellung, die der Cligès in mehr als einer Hinsicht in der Geschichte des Romans im europäischen Mittelalter einnimmt, auch von germanistischer Seite stärker in den Blick genommen werden kann. Damit wird die Basis sowohl für eine interdisziplinär arbeitende Mediävistik als auch für Forschungen zur Geschichte und Theorie des Romans erweitert. In einer umfassenden Einführung werden zudem die wichtigsten Interpretationsprobleme, der aktuelle Forschungstand zum Cligès in der internationalen Romanistik und seine Stellung in der Geschichte des Artusromans skizziert. Mit der Übersetzung, der Einleitung, dem Kommentar und einer umfassenden Bibliographie bietet die Monographie eine unverzichtbare Grundlage für weitere Forschungen. Es ist zu erwarten, dass sie auf breites Interesse stoßen und das germanistische Bild über die Geschichte des Romans im europäischen Mittelalter nachhaltig verändern wird
