Primatology, Ethics and Trauma offers an analytical re-examination of the research conducted into the linguistic abilities of the Oklahoma chimpanzees, uncovering the historical reality of the research. It has been 50 years since the first language experiments on chimpanzees. Robert Ingersoll was one of the researchers from 1975 to 1983. He is well known for being one of the main carers and best friend of the chimpanzee, Nim Chimpsky, but there were other chimpanzees in the University of Oklahoma's Institute for Primate Studies, including Washoe, Moja, Kelly, Booee, and Onan, who were taught sign language in the quest to discover whether language is learned or innate in humans. Antonina Anna Scarna's expertise in language acquisition and neuroscience offers a vehicle for critical evaluation of those studies.Ingersoll and Scarna investigate how this research failed to address the emotional needs of the animals. Research into trauma has made scientific advances since those studies. It is time to consider the research from a different perspective, examining the neglect and cruelty that was inflicted on those animals in the name of psychological science. This book re-examines those cases, addressing directly the suffering and traumatic experiences endured by the captive chimpanzees, in particular the female chimpanzee, Washoe, and her resultant inability to be a competent mother. This book discusses the unethical nature of the studies in the context of recent research on trauma and offers a specific and direct psychological message, proposing to finally close the door on the language side of these chimpanzee studies. This book is a novel and groundbreaking account. It will be of interest to lay readers and academics alike. Those working as research, experimental, and clinical psychologists will find this book of interest, as will psychotherapists, linguists, anthropologists, historians of science and primatologists, as well as those involved in primate sanctuary and conservation

"The Routledge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition and Psycholinguistics provides a comprehensive survey of the latest research at the intersection of linguistics, cognitive psychology, and applied linguistics, for those seeking to understand the mental architecture and processes that shape the acquisition of additional languages. The handbook represents the full complexity of second language acquisition across the lifespan, spanning childhood bilinguals and adult L2 learners, and is inclusive of heritage languages, early bilingualism and multilingualism, and language attrition"-- * Uniquely offers systematic, all-inclusive, comprehensive, detailed coverage that brings together psycholinguistics and SLA in their full breadth, empirical and theoretical. Competing handbooks focus on SLA, psycholinguistics, or bilingualism, while discussing the other field in part - but do not unite these areas with a psycholinguistic perspective on themes and topics in SLA the way this volume does, nor do they have the depth and breadth of this volume. It also takes a forward-looking approach to new contexts and applications of psycholinguistics in SLA, and sets the stage for future research. * Represents formal, functional, applied, educational, and methodological perspectives on SLA. The methods chapters are uniquely related to the content chapters, so that readers can identify the suitability and applicability of a method to research areas in SLA. * A unique reference for advanced students and scholars/researchers from a wide array of subjects who are highly interested in psycholinguistics and language learning/acquisition, evident in the journals publishing work in this area and proliferation of conferences: second language acquisition, applied linguistics, psycholinguistics, bilingualism/multilingualism, neurolinguistics, cognitive science, psychology, education, and educational linguistics. * Provides guidance both to newcomers and more experienced researchers in the field who turn to psycholinguistic methods to address their research questions. This handbook fills a gap in the market and will appeal to a broad audience of researchers and (graduate) students in the expanding fields of bilingualism, multilingualism, and SLA

"In The Anguished and the Enchanted, M.H. Bowker offers a lengthy critical essay and richly annotated English translation of a lost Finnish translation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's The Little Prince. Featuring a substantial Translator's Preface, M.H. Bowker develops a psychoanalytic lens through which to regard Saint-Exupéry's classic work, offering a more nuanced and less ""fable-esque"" text than any translation and interpretation to date.On Bowker's reading, dark and primitive unconscious forces -- including neglect and abuse at home, the hatred of maturation and development, the projection of feelings of worthlessness onto others, the creation of an absurd and futile world, and more -- infest the story, not unlike the Baobab trees dreaded by the little prince. Those already familiar with The Little Prince will find in The Anguished and the Enchanted a new way of regarding what has perhaps become a favorite or even a beloved book. Those unfamiliar with the original work will discover a sometimes tragic, sometimes sympathetic, sometimes harrowing account of the lengths to which persons will go in their struggle to find -- or to escape from -- meaningful places for themselves in the world of adults."
