    Mediante el análisis crítico del discurso se observan las prácticas discursivas, el texto y las prácticas socioculturales de extractos de la novela chican@ Caramelo con respecto a las menciones que se hacen sobre alimentos y sobre la cocina como un espacio privado donde tres personajes se proveen de poder o se distancian del mismo. De igual forma, se observan alternancias de código relacionadas con los alimentos y las prácticas socioculturales del tercer espacio en cuestión. Se trata de una literatura que refleja el habla de los chicanos mediante la oralidad fingida, se refleja la cortesía positiva, prevalece la voz activa y el uso del presente con una narradora testigo. En concreto, la más joven se empodera en la esfera de la escritura para dar voz a su comunidad.
