American Mobilities investigates representations of mobility – social, economic, geographic – in American film and literature during the Depression, WWII, and the early Cold War. With an emphasis on the dual meaning of »domestic«, referring to both the family home and the nation, this study traces the important trope of mobility that runs through the »American« century. Juxtaposing canonical fiction with popular, and low-budget independent films with Classical Hollywood, Leyda brings the analytic tools of American cultural and literary studies to bear on an eclectic array of primary texts as she builds a case for the significance of mobility in the study of the United States.

»American Mobilities« focuses on a pivotal point when Americans realized that mobility could have disadvantages, which would in later decades again become apparent. A historical perspective helps us to better understand the origins of contemporary representations of mobility in uneven flows of capital and labor. Julia Leyda shows: In the new millennium, questions of mobility prove to be an important thread that runs through the »American« century from the desperation of the Depression through the prosperous years of economic and international expansion and back into global financial crisis.

In this paper, I study channels through which risk-appetite shocks to global investors, i.e., global financial shocks, are transmitted to emerging market economies(EMEs). I focus on how transmission channels have changed as EMEs have become able to borrow abroad in the form of equity and local currency debt. First, I empirically show that much of the transmission of global financial shocks to EMEs is reflected in equity and local currency bond portfolio flows. I then develop a small open economy model which, augmented with leverage constrained banks and foreign investors who purchase equities and bonds, can replicate these empirical findings qualitatively. Finally, I calibrate the model to the Korean economy in which corporations and the government have no significant net foreign currency debts, but most of the external liabilities of the country are Korean won-denominated equities and debts. Quantitative analysis of the model suggests that global financial shocks are a dominant factor in financial market fluctuations and significantly contribute to the dynamics of the real economy in Korea. In short, all the analysis in this paper implies that to a substantial extent, risk-appetite shocks to global investors are transmitted to EMEs via fickle portfolio flows to equity and local currency bond markets in EMEs

Abstract In this paper we ask whether countries can influence their exposure to changes in global financial conditions. Specifically, we show that even though we can model cross-country capital flows via a global factor that closely tracks changes in global financial conditions, there is a large degree of heterogeneity in the sensitivity of each country to this same global factor. We then evaluate whether this cross-country heterogeneity can be attributed to different policy choices, including measures of capital flow management, such as capital controls and macroprudential policies. In our main results, we show that higher levels of capital controls and macroprudential policies both dampen the sensitivity to the global factor. Furthermore, we show that countries' monetary and exchange rate policies can also be successfully deployed. Overall, our results have implications that extend beyond the surge that preceded the 2008 global financial crisis, and that closely resonate in light of the financial disruptions that followed the COVID-19 pandemic

We quantify the effect of exchange rate fluctuations on firm leverage. When home currency appreciates, firms who hold foreign currency debt and local currency assets observe higher net worth as appreciation lowers the value of their foreign currency debt. These firms can borrow more as a result and increase their leverage. When home currency depreciates, the reverse happens as firms have to de-lever with a negative shock to their balance sheets. Using firm-level data for leverage from 10 emerging market economies during the period from 2002 to 2015, we show that firms operating in countries whose non-financial sectors hold more of the debt in foreign currency, increase (decrease) their leverage relatively more after home currency appreciations (depreciations). Combining the leverage data with firm-level FX debt data for 4 emerging market countries, we further show that our results hold at the most granular level. Our quantitative results are asymmetric: the effects of depre-ciations, that are generally associated with sudden stops, are quantitatively larger than those of appreciations, which take place at a slower pace over time during capital inflow episodes. As our exercise compares depreciations and appreciations of similar size, these results are suggestive of financial frictions being more binding during depreciations than a possible relaxation of such frictions during appreciations

In this paper, we show that cross-border portfolio flows around the peak of the European Crisis induced households to rebalance their portfolios toward housing. Estimating difference-in-differences regressions around Draghi's ``Whatever It Takes" speech in July 2012 estimated with household data from the ECB's Household Finance and Consumption Survey, we find that portfolio inflows induce households with larger ex-ante bond and equity shares to rebalance more strongly toward housing. The effect is not driven by higher pre-treatment access to credit or higher credit growth during the treatment period and is stronger for wealthier and less risk-averse households.

Globally, financial institutions have increased their holdings of domestic sovereign debt, tightening the linkage between the health of the financial system and the level of sovereign debt, or the "financial sector-sovereign nexus," during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In South Africa, the nexus is still relatively moderate, albeit rising, and the increased focus of the Prudential Authority on the associated risks provide reassurance. Options to mitigate such risks through the use of regulatory measures can be explored. However, absent the necessary fiscal consolidation and structural reforms, risks from the nexus to both the financial system and the sovereign will increase
