Over the past generation, scholars have devoted increasing attention to the diverse forms that Jewish mysticism has taken both in the past and today: what was once called "nonsense" by Jewish scholars has generated important research and attention both within the academy and beyond, as demonstrated by the popular fascination with figures such as Madonna and Demi Moore and the growing interest in spirituality. In Jewish Mysticism and Kabbalah, leading experts introduce the history of this scholarship as well as the most recent insights and debates that currently animate the field in a way that is accessible to a broad audience. From mystical outpourings in ancient Palestine to the Kabbalah Centre, and from attitudes towards gender to mystical contributions to Jewish messianic movements, this volume explores the various expressions of Jewish mysticism from antiquity to the present day in an engaging style appropriate for students and non-specialists alike

The first study of its kind, Magic, Mysticism, and Hasidism explores the supernatural motifs and elements in Jewish folktales and hasidic stories through the ages. Thoroughly researched and annotated, Professor Gedalyah Nigal's work examines such phenomena as the baalei shem - the individuals who by their knowledge of the "holy names" were able to perform great feats; kefitzat ha-derekh - the ability to traverse great distances in very little time; the transmigration of souls; dybbuks, possession, and exorcism; demons and their marriages to humans; the battles against forces of evil; the power of amulets; and journeys to the Garden of Eden and back. Contrary to the popular misconception that magic is antithetical to belief in the omnipotence of God, Nigal clearly shows that the mystical practices of the hasidic rebbes and holy men were the direct result of their faith and sanctity "Abracadabra! Hocus-Pocus!" is what often comes to mind when we think of magic. We conjure up images of sorcerers and witches with cauldrons and crystal balls, magic wands, mysterious potions, and evil inclinations. We don't think of great hasidic rebbes, piety, and holiness. In Magic, Mysticism, and Hasidism: The Supernatural in Jewish Thought, Nigal shows that Jewish tradition not only allows for magic, but its use is one of the highest manifestations of holiness. Through his careful research, Gedalyah Nigal brings to light an often neglected and misunderstood element of Jewish tradition. For both scholars and interested laymen, Magic, Mysticism, and Hasidism is a groundbreaking work

Jacob's Ladder discusses the reflection of kabbalistic allegory in Russian literature and provides a detailed analysis of the evolution of the perception of Kabbalah in Russian consciousness. Aptekman investigates the questions of when, how, and why Kabbalah has been used in Russian literary texts from Pre-Romanticism to Modernism and what particular role it played in the larger context of the Russian literary tradition. The correct understanding of this liaison helps the reader clarify many enigmatic images in Russian literary works of the last two centuries and to understand the roots of a particular cultural falsification that played an important role in the anti-Semitic mythology of the twentieth century

"Is a study of Kafka's thinking and writing from strictly a religious point of view justified? He is, after all, considered one of the pillars of modernism. As such, Kafka's well-established deploring of the inadequacy of his own Jewish upbringing only fuels the generally held belief that he was not much influenced by his religion. Or does it?" "This compelling book considers the writer from a very different point of view. In jargon-free language, Judaist Karl Erich Grozinger reveals that Kafka actually had an extraordinarily detailed and sophisticated knowledge of Judaismparticularly of the Kabbalah and kabbalistic tradition. Working from the earlier critical writings of Gershom Scholem, Professor Grozinger shows that these influences can be found in all of Kafka's texts: his novels and short stories; but, especially, in his diary entries and aphorisms." "In fact, the essence of what we have come to call Kafkaesque has its origins and foundations primarily in the Kabbalah. This ranges from the kabbalistic tradition of the gatekeeper in The Trial to Joseph K. and the surveyor in The Castle, men who try their hands at theurgy in order to intervene in the divine direction of life events. In one of Kafka's most famous stories, Josephine the Singer plays the role of the rebbe, or tzaddik: the person who takes on the role of theurgist (or intercessor) for the community." "Kafka's work has been subjected to many radically different interpretations ever since critics discovered it. Above all, the influence of Jewish theology - ideas of judgment and sin, atonement and justification - on Kafka's writings, as seen through the lens of kabbalistic-Eastern Jewish and Yiddish traditions, adds an important dimension to our understanding of this enigmatic and fascinating author."--BOOK JACKET.

"In the study of Judaism, the Zohar has captivated the minds of interpreters for over seven centuries, and continues to entrance readers in the modern day. Yet despite these centuries of study, very little attention has been devoted to the literary dimensions of the text, to formal appreciation of its status as one of the great works of religious literature. The Art of Mystical Narrative offers a critical approach to the Zohar story, seeking to explore the interplay between fictional discourse and mystical exegesis. Eitan Fishbane argues that the narrative must be understood first and foremost as a work of the fictional imagination, a representation of a world and reality invented by the thirteenth century authors of the text. He claims that the text functions as a kind of dramatic literature, one in which the power of revealing mystical secrets is demonstrated and performed for the reading audience. The Art of Mystical Narrative offers a fresh, interdisciplinary perspective on the intersections of literary and religious studies"...
