    This volume encompasses a broad span of issues related to borders as areas of intense activity substantially contributing to the dynamics of culture. The chapters address questions relating to the construction and reconstruction of borders, as well as the experience and representation of physical, spiritual, imagined and symbolic borders. The authors provide perspectives on emerging and dissolving borders in the past and present. Special emphasis is placed on subjective perception by asking how borders are experienced and expressed at the level of the specific community or individual. Several articles tackle dramatic and controversial issues like war, conflict between different ideologies and cultures, and remembering. The authors also explore dialectical relations between culture, social relations and landscape, and the interplay of ideological constructions and material culture. The contributions are arranged into two sections focusing on two wider issues: how borders are drawn in landscape, religion and scientific discourse (Wandering borders), and how representations of cultural borders and border crossings have changed over time (Bordering ruptures: the dynamics of self-description). The authors of this volume come from various scholarly fields and offer innovative tools for expanding the concept of the border across disciplinary frames.

    Due to their high material value and their meaningful iconography, Aegean signet rings have already attracted considerable attention in research. The focus was often on the analysis and interpretation of images, however, an overall consideration of this extremely complex archaeological genre and its diverse functions within the Minoan-Mycenaean administration and society was lacking so far. For the first time, not only preserved rings but also imprints of signet rings on sealings are systematically investigated in this work, which allows a new understanding of the material and its transformation during the Aegean Bronze Age. Aufgrund ihres hohen Materialwerts und ihrer aussagekräftigen Ikonographie fanden ägäische Siegelringe in der Forschung bereits mehrfach Beachtung. Dabei stand häufig die Analyse und Interpretation der Bilder im Fokus. Eine Gesamtbetrachtung dieser äußerst komplexen archäologischen Gattung und ihrer vielfältigen Funktionen innerhalb der minoisch-mykenischen Administration und Gesellschaft fehlte jedoch bisher. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden erstmalig nicht nur erhaltene Ringe, sondern auch Abdrücke goldener Siegelringe auf Tonplomben systematisch untersucht, was ein neues Verständnis der Gattung und deren Wandel im Laufe der Ägäischen Bronzezeit ermöglicht.

    The volume contains 93 objects originating from workshops of the East Greek Area, the island of Cyprus, the Greek homeland and the Western Mediterranean like South Italy or Etruria.The pieces are shown to a large extent for the first time. Among the geometric pottery a fragment of a monumental crater of the Dipylon workshop is particularly noteworthy, among the Corinthian pottery two large alabastra of the Luxus-group emerge, but the Attic red-figure style is represented as the most prominent by a hydria of the Berlin painter. Der Band veröffentlicht 93 Gefäße der Archäologischen Sammlungen der Universität Graz. Er enthält Objekte aus der Bronzezeit Zyperns, der geometrischen , archaischen und klassischen Zeit Griechenlands sowie Keramik aus

    etruskischen, kampanischen, apulischen, apulisch-lukanischen und sizilischen Werkstätten. Besonders hervorzuheben sind geometrische Fragmente der Dipylon-Werkstatt, korinthische Gefäße der Luxus-Gruppe und eine Hydria des Berliner Malers.
