Bringing together leading scholars of literature, history, library studies, and communications, Print Culture Histories Beyond the Metropolis rejects the idea that print culture necessarily spreads outwards from capitals and cosmopolitan cities and focuses attention to how the residents of smaller cities, provincial districts, rural settings, and colonial outposts have produced, disseminated, and read print materials.Too often print media has been represented as an engine of metropolitan modernity. Rather than being the passive recipients of print culture generated in city centres, the inhabitants of provinces and colonies have acted independently, as jobbing printers in provincial Britain, black newspaper proprietors in the West Indies, and library patrons in "Middletown," Indiana, to mention a few examples. This important new book gives us a sophisticated account of how printed materials circulated, a more precise sense of their impact, and a fuller of understanding of how local contexts shaped reading experiences

The Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio has had a long and colourful history in English translation. This new interdisciplinary study presents the first exploration of the reception of Boccaccio’s writings in English literary culture, tracing his presence from the early fifteenth century to the 1930s. Guyda Armstrong tells this story through a wide-ranging journey through time and space – from the medieval reading communities of Naples and Avignon to the English court of Henry VIII, from the censorship of the Decameron to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, from the world of fine-press printing to the clandestine pornographers of 1920s New York, and much more.Drawing on the disciplines of book history, translation studies, comparative literature, and visual studies, the author focuses on the book as an object, examining how specific copies of manuscripts and printed books were presented to an English readership by a variety of translators. Armstrong is thereby able to reveal how the medieval text in translation is remade and re-authorized for every new generation of readers

In the world of books and literature, "hype" is associated with bestsellerism-the books that sell the most, are read by vast numbers, and constantly talked about in media and staff rooms. Often, it is the success in itself that generates an interest because popularity begets popularity. Quite often though, a hyped bestseller is met with a skeptic criticism of poor language, a badly constructed plot, a predictable story line, or all three. The bestseller phenomenon is sometimes conceived as a threat against "real" literature. Research into the creation, reception, and meaning of bestsellers is

The role played by the book trade in the diffusion of artistic and architectural theory, fashion and practice is explored, while other essays trace the impact on the appearance of books themselves of aesthetic trends and of advances in the techniques of binding, colour printing and illustration. Among topics discussed are the printed sources for decorative motifs in 16th-century churches, the publication history of the works of Andrea Palladio, and the evolution of drawing manuals in 17th-century England. Other subjects include the library formed by the architect Sir John Soane, developments in 19th-century art publishing, and the role of printed catalogues in documenting the acquisitions made by English collectors of paintings, sculpture and antiquities

"This book takes us into the social networks of contemporary literary culture, examining how small-scale presses, writers, book distributors, and editors make new fiction-and make a living-in a mass market indifferent to all but a tiny slice of the literature produced today. McSweeney's, the small San Francisco-based press founded by Dave Eggers, is the book's central subject, but the story of that press serves also as portal to broader networks of contemporary literary production, a network that requires not one person-like the famous Eggers-but thousands. How does new writing emerge and find readers today? Why does one writer's work become famous while another's remains invisible? Making literature now tells the stories of the creators, editors, readers, and critics who make their living by making literature itself come alive. The book shows how various conditions--including gender, education, business dynamics, social networks, money, and the forces of literary tradition--affect the things we can choose, or refuse, to read. Amy Hungerford focuses her discussion on literary bestsellers as well as little-known traditional and digital literature from smaller presses, such as McSweeney's. She deftly matches the particular human stories of the makers with the impersonal structures through which literary reputation is made. Ranging from fine-grained ethnography to polemical argument, this book transforms our sense of how and why new literature appears--and disappears--in contemporary American culture"--
