The first features images of children that the artist has known: being bathed or fed, laughing or crying with family members, posing with pets or mugging for the camera. The second section presents works from Friedlander's years of photographing people on the street: children in parades, sitting in cars, reflected in storefront windows. Taken together, these images offer a picture of America's youth through the eyes of one of the most renowned photographers of his generation

This book juxtaposes Karl Marx's biting - and memorably expressed - insights into the nature of profit, capitalism and the capitalist, with images of areas in which the process of profit-making is clearly exposed. Together, the sites pictured generate profits of over $35 billion each year. Shot during 'Rencontres d'Arles', the world's largest photography gathering, this book presents a very different reality to that of the city's Roman architecture and Van Gogh memorabilia. This is an area of industrial zones, traveler encampments, and high-security prisons. One in which, palpably, spending is minimized and the drive for profit reigns. The images are the work of Red Box Photography, a group of radical photographers based in Scotland

Robert Mapplethrope (1946-1989) is one of the twentieth century's most important artists, known for his groundbreaking and provocative work. He studied painting, drawing and sculpture in Brooklyn in the 1960s and started taking photographs when he acquired a Polaroid camera, in 1970. Beginning in 1973 and until his death in 1989, Mapplethorpe explored the flower with extraordinary dedication, using a range of photographic processes - from Polaroids to dye-transfer color works. In carefully constructed compositions, he captured roses, orchids, snapdragons, daisies, tulips and other species - both common and rare - and forever transformed the way we perceive a classic and familiar subject. The stunning results are collected in Mapplethorpe: Flora, the most comprehensive volume to date on this body of Mapplethorpe's work

Pictures from one of many housing estates that sprang up in Sweden at a time when people increasingly moved into the country's expanding towns and cities in the early 1960s. Within the welfare state's vision of community and mass produced owner-occupied housing. Over the years, the exteriors have changed according to the owners' preferences, formed by a more individualistic society than when the houses were first built. The photos were taken in Falkenberg, Sweden, between 2006 and 2016 in the area where I lived during my first ten years, from 1966 to 1976

With this series, Indra Laenens takes us on an 'imaginary journey' through the First World War. Fascinated from a young age by war photography, he made many collages from self-portraits inspired by popular scenes by Bruegel and old black and white documentary photographs. The photos of the First World War led the artist to work in a realistic way, focusing on emotion and experience, but with a personal look at the time guided by his readings and the help of specialists. The principle of the duplication of so makes it possible to test the limits of the medium. The book is also intended as a strong call for peace, no more war... With its singular focus on the very best portrait photography of the 1940s and 1950s Hollywood film noir era, every page of this coffee-table volume is rich in brooding atmosphere. The portraits gathered here, of actors such as Rita Hayworth, Orson Welles, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer, Gene Tierney, Burt Lancaster, Ava Gardner, Jack Palance, Joan Crawford and Richard Widmark, were taken by premier studio photographers such as Robert Coburn, Ernest Bachrach and A.L. "Whitey" Schafer. Their remarkable ability to exaggerate the play of shadow and light to dramatic effect is the reason that their work still has the same ability to arrest the viewer as it did in the 1940s. The photographs remain some of the most innovative and striking portraits in the history of cinema. Carefully curated, the photographs are taken from the collection of MPTV, one of the world's most exclusive archives of entertainment photography. The book includes many previously unseen images, including hitherto unpublished outtakes from The Night of the Hunter (1955) and Sweet Smell of Success (1957); and classic moments from films such as Gilda (1946), Double Indemnity (1944), The Lady from Shanghai (1947) and celebrated B-noirs such as Gun Crazy (1950) and The Hitch-Hiker (1953). Reel Art Press' exquisite print quality serves to emphasize the timeless power of the black-and-white studio portraiture

"Examining this innovative collaboration as a turning point in the history of photography and in queer American culture. Body Language is the first in-depth study of the extraordinary interplay between photographer George Platt Lynes and PaJaMa (painters Paul Cadmus, Jared French, and Margaret Hoening French). These enigmatic photographs--issuing from intimate private networks and queer sexualities--helped ground friendships and also found their way into the public worlds of fashion and fame. Nick Mauss and Angela Miller offer timely readings of how practices of staging, collaboration, and psychological enactment through the body arced across the boundaries of art and life, private and public worlds, anticipating contemporary social media. For these audacious artists, the camera was used not to capture, but to actively perform. Renouncing photography's conventional role as mirror of the real, Lynes and PaJaMa energized forms of worldmaking via a new social framing of the self"--
