Preliminary Material -- INTRODUCTION -- FLAUBERT : DE L’HISTOIRE A L’ANTHROPOLOGIE: SALAMMBO -- L’ÉDUCATION SENTIMENTALE -- DIGRESSION : LE PARADIGME BIOLOGIQUE ET MEDICAL CHEZ BURCKHARDT ET NIETZSCHE -- ZOLA : DU PROGRES A LA PULSION: ZOLA ET LE NATURALISME -- NANA -- GERMINAL -- ZOLA : PANORAMA ET CONCLUSION -- FONTANE : DESIR ET CONTRAINTE SOCIALE: LES PREDECESSEURS FRANÇAIS -- EFFI BRIEST -- IRRUNGEN, WIRRUNGEN -- CONCLUSION -- BIBLIOGRAPHIE -- INDEX DES NOMS -- TABLE DE MATIERES.

Although the body has been a vast subject for postcolonial studies, few theorists have attempted to go beyond the simple mixing of races in examining the impact of colonialism on the colonized body. However, as Deepika Bahri argues, it is essential to see the postcolonial body in a variety of forms: as capable of transformation not only in psyche and outward behavior but also in flesh and blood. European colonizers brought new ways of seeing the body in matters as basic as how to eat, speak, sit, shit, or spit. As nations decolonized, these imperialistic ideas remained, becoming part of the global economy of the body. In Postcolonial Biology, Bahri argues that the political challenges of the twenty-first century require that we deconstruct these imperial notions of the body, as they are fundamental to power structures governing todays globalized world. Postcolonial Biology investigates how minds and bodies have been shaped by colonial contact, to create deeply embedded hierarchies among the colonized. Moving beyond North/Souththinking, Bahri reframes the questions of postcolonial bodies to address all societies, whether developed or developing. Engaging in innovative, highly original readings of major thinkers such as Adorno, Horkenheimer, Derrida, and Fanon, this book brings an important new focus to the field of postcolonial studies-one that is essential to understanding the ideas and conflicts that currently dominate the global order

"In this interdisciplinary work, author Ron Edwards offers an innovative rereading of H. G. Wells' "The Island of Dr. Moreau." Edwards utilizes his twenty-five years in biology and the ethics of animal research to examine the bioethical implications of Wells' work and its relevance to contemporary scientific and philosophical discussions. He tackles the myth of human exceptionalism, the notion that we are fundamentally different from the rest of the animal kingdom. We must view ourselves, he argues, not as from animals, but as animals. The approachable tone is suitable for a wide audience of the scientifically curious. At the same time, great care is given to providing an accurate and considered treatment of the technical aspects of the novel, including the scientific plausibility of Dr. Moreau's experiment. Never before have Wells' ideas been examined in such detail by an evolutionary biologist with the author's considerable experience. The implications are far-reaching, touching on key topics in animal rights, evolution, and the relationship between religion and science. Its approachability and dedication to technical accuracy produces a unique perspective on Wells' classic. Anyone with an interest in confronting some of the central issues of human existence through the lens of fiction will be rewarded with an original and thought-provoking work. "...

Krementsov examines a particular fascination with the dream of immortality and the place of science and fiction in its pursuit in Russia during roughly a decade that followed the country's political revolutions of 1917. It argues that contemporary scientific experiments aimed at the control over life, death, and disease inspired many Russian writers to conduct their own literary experiments with the ideas and techniques offered by experimental biology and medicine, which found expression in both popular-science writings and a new literary genre, science fiction
