    Main description: The study examines texts by Julia Kristeva, Philippe Sollers, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Georges Perec, Italo Calvino and Roland Barthes, stemming largely from the 80s and 90s, with a view to essaying a tour d'horizon of an important transitional period in present-day literature against the background of system-theoretical considerations. It transpires that the apparent paradoxicality of the concept 'post-avantgarde' is a constitutional element in the self-reflection and self-description of a number of authors long established as major representatives of avant-garde groups such as Tel Quel, Nouveau Roman and Oulipo. The (self-)observations of these authors have a number of things in common. Their reflections on the historical limits of a-historical, formalist and self-referential theory-formation and the narrative practice associated with it, and the all-pervading preoccupation with the evolution of literary forms are crucial elements in their quest for an aesthetic program. This engagement with the historicity of literary forms is both a common denominator and a contribution of genuine originality, extending to a philosophical concern with the theory of the subject

    Der Problemnexus zwischen Avantgarde und Faschismus, für Italien und Deutschland bereits größtenteils erforscht, wird in der vorliegenden Arbeit erstmals in bezug auf die spanische Literatur untersucht. Die Frage nach der reaktionären Moderne erschließt einen vergessenen Sektor der spanischen Erzählprosa, der, quer zur gängigen Epochengliederung, die Leerstelle zwischen Vorkriegsavantgarde und Nachkriegsrealismus füllt. Zunächst werden die weitgehend unbekannten Autoren präsentiert: Ernesto Giménez Caballero (1899-1988), Vordenker des Faschismus in Spanien, Tomás Borrás (1891-1976), Felipe Ximénez de Sandoval (1903-1978), Samuel Ros (1904-1945) und Antonio de Obregón (1909-1985). Ohne reduktionistische Thesenbildung verfolgt die Studie in unmittelbarer Auseinandersetzung mit den Texten den Prozeß der ideologischen Umwertung bzw. Funktionalisierung avantgardistischer Diskursformen und Stilelemente (Pirandellismus, Expressionismus, Ästhetik der Grausamkeit). Inhaltlich manifestiert sich die Entwicklung von der 'Vanguardia' zur präfaschistischen 'Avanzada' in der Darstellung von Identitätsproblematik und Gesellschaftsbezug.     In Avant-Garde Canadian Literature, Gregory Betts draws attention to the fact that the avant-garde has had a presence in Canada long before the country's literary histories have recognized, and that the radicalism of avant-garde art has been sabotaged by pedestrian terms of engagement by the Canadian media, the public, and the literary critics. This book presents a rich body of evidence to illustrate the extent to which Canadians have been producing avant-garde art since the start of the twentieth century.Betts explores the radical literary ambitions and achievements of three different nodes of avant-garde literary activity: mystical revolutionaries from the 1910s to the 1930s; Surrealists/Automatists from the 1920s to the 1960s; and Canadian Vorticists from the 1920s to the 1970s.     For more than three hundred years, manifestoes have defined the aims of radical groups, individuals, and parties while galvanizing revolutionary movements. As Janet Lyon shows, the manifesto is both a signal genre of political modernity and one of the defining forms of aesthetic modernism. Ranging from the pamphlet wars of seventeenth-century England to dyke and ACT-UP manifestoes of the 1990s, her extraordinarily accomplished book offers the first extended treatment of this influential form of discourse. Lyon demonstrates that the manifesto, usually perceived as the very model of rhetorical transparency, is in fact a complex, ideologically inflected genre-one that has helped to shape modern consciousness. Lyon explores the development of the genre during periods of profound historical crisis. The French Revolution generated broadsides that became templates for the texts of Chartism, the Commune, and late-nineteenth-century anarchism, while in the twentieth century the historical avant-garde embraced a revolutionary discourse that sought in the manifesto's polarizing polemics a means for disaggregating and publicizing radical artistic movements. More recently, in the manifestoes of the 1960s, the wretched of the earth called for either the full realization or the final rejection of the idea of the universal subject, paving the way for contemporary contestations of identity among second- and third-wave feminists and queer activists
