History is increasingly made in images, not only because its records are largely photographic but also because our ideas about the past are formed in visual terms. This book offers a discussion of contemporary art practices which question the received notions of historical representations after the pivotal changes of 1989 in Europe. These art practices reveal, in different ways, the operative role of the photographic media in making and remaking history. Not limited to a particular artistic medium, they demonstrate how history is forged through enacting or re-enacting its past forms, while, on the other hand, they indicate how copying and quoting can contribute to creating a new, operative aesthetics. By foregrounding a performative character of images, art is shown to construct an alternative knowledge of the past 1989, photography and history, representation -- The revolution as a technical disturbance -- Chaosmos : montage as spatial history -- Future pasts of a community -- Painting history photographically -- Afterword : History on an endless trial

Photographic returns -- Looking forward and looking back: Rashid Johnson and Frederick Douglass on photography -- Photographic remains: Sally Mann at Antietam -- The scene of the crime: Deborah Luster -- Photographic referrals: Lorna Simpson's 9 props -- Afterimages: Jason Lazarus -- Photographic reenactments: Carrie Mae Weems's constructing history -- False returns: Taryn Simon's The Innocents -- A glimpse forward: Dawoud Bey's The Birmingham project. "In PHOTOGRAPHIC RETURNS Shawn Smith sets out to examine works of contemporary art, only to find that many of the works refer back to the past, to photography's many intersections with the history of racial justice in the U.S. Smith focuses on flashpoints in that history -- spanning from the abolitionist movement, to the Civil War, lynching, and mass incarceration-- to mark the roles that photography has played in documenting the exigencies of Black life, and as a tool for resisting those racial regimes. For each of these moments, Smith shows how contemporary photographers utilize their medium as a way to recall, revise, or amplify the relationship between racial politics in the past and in the present. She argues that the tendency of African-American photographers and other artists to return to the archive of early photography does not simply point to the usefulness of early photography as document of the past, but to the recursive nature of photography itself. This study expands our theories of photography and memory by arguing that the recursive temporality of photography is central to its role in recording and remembering history. It also asserts that photography is an invaluable tool for critical practice of racial justice"--

"Fragmentation of the Photographic Image in the Digital Age challenges orthodoxies of photographic theory and practice. Beyond understanding the image as a static representation of reality, it shows photography as a linchpin of dynamic developments in augmented intelligence, neuroscience, critical theory and cybernetic cultures. Through essays by leading philosophers, political theorists, software artists, media researchers, curators, and experimental programmers photography emerges not as a mimetic or a recording device but simultaneously as a new type of critical discipline and a new artform that stands at the crossroads of visual art, contemporary philosophy and digital technologies"--

"What does it mean to live in a post-atomic world? Photography and contemporary art offer a provocative lens through which to comprehend the by-products of the atomic age, from weapons proliferation, nuclear disaster, and aerial surveillance to toxic waste disposal and climate change. Confronting cultural fallout from the dawn of the nuclear age, Through Post-Atomic Eyes addresses the myriad iterations of nuclear threat and their visual legacy in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Whether in the iconic black-and-white photograph of a mushroom cloud rising over Nagasaki in 1945 or the steady stream of real-time video documenting the 2011 meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, atomic culture--and our understanding of it--is inextricably constructed by the visual. This book takes the image as its starting point to address the visual inheritance of atomic anxieties; the intersection of photography, nuclear industries, and military technocultures; and the complex temporality of nuclear technologies. Contemporary artists contribute lens-based works that explore the consequences of the nuclear, and its afterlives, in the Anthropocene. Revealing, through both art and prose, startling new connections between the ongoing threat of nuclear catastrophe and current global crises, Through Post-Atomic Eyes is a richly illustrated examination of how photography shapes and is shaped by nuclear culture."--

"Italian futurism visualized diverse types of motion, which had been rooted in pervasive kinetic and vehicular forces generated during a period of dramatic modernization in the early twentieth century. Yet, as David Mather's sweeping intellectual and art historical scholarship demonstrates, it was the camera-not the engine-that proved to be the primary invention against which many futurist ideas and practices were measured. Overturning several misconceptions about Italian futurism's interest in the disruptive and destructive effects of technology, Futurist Conditions provides a refreshing update to that historical narrative by arguing that the formal and conceptual approaches by futurist visual artists reoriented the possibly dehumanizing effects of mechanized imagery toward more humanizing, spiritual aims. Through its sustained analysis of the artworks and writings of Umberto Boccioni, Giacomo Balla, and the Bragaglia brothers, dating to the first decade after the movement's founding in 1909, Mather's account of their obsession with kinetic motion pivots around a 1913 debate on the place and relative import of photography among traditional artistic mediums-a debate culminating in the expulsion of the Bragaglias, but one that also prompted a range of productive responses by other futurist artists to world-changing social, political, and economic conditions"--
