Although it is disputed whether there was a genre of ‘apocalyptic literature,’ it is obvious that numerous texts from ancient Judaism, early Christianity, and other religious milieus share a specific view of history and the world to come. Many of these writings are presented in form of a heavenly (divine) revelation, mediated through an otherworldly figure (like an angel) to an elected human being who discloses this revelation to his recipients in written form. In different strands of early Judaism, ancient Christianity as well as in Gnosticism, Manichaeism, and Islam, apocalyptic writings played an important role from early on and were produced also in later centuries. One of the most characteristic features of these texts is their specific interpretation of history, based on the knowledge about the upper, divine realm and the world to come. Against this background the volume deals with a wide range of apocalyptic texts from different periods and various religious backgrounds

When situating fixed prayers from the Dead Sea Scrolls corpus within the broader literary horizons of Second Temple period Judaism a number of discernible features emerge that allow us to group together prayers into clusters or streams of tradition according to a coherence and affinity of ideas. This article focuses on two distinct clusters of prayers: the first is influenced by the type of apocalyptic thinking espoused 1 Enoch, particularly the book’s views on cosmology and angelology; the second is influenced by a penitential theology inspired by the cycle of national reward and punishment that is illustrated in Deuteronomy and by the priestly laws of reparation in Leviticus.

The apocalyptic literature exhibits a worldview thatis significantly different from that of most of the Hebrew Bible, because of the expectation of judgment after death. This literatureis not more patient of injustice than were the prophets, butit has less interest in imagining a just society on earth. The Epistleof Enoch can serve as an illustration. It is exceptional in theapocalyptic literature in its concern with social injustice, but ithopes for redress after death rather than in this world. This shiftin perspective is also broadly true of the New Testament, as wecan see in the Gospel of Luke and the Epistle of James.

Mateusz Kusio traces and investigates the references to the Antichrist across ancient Jewish and Christian literature. Beginning with a reception-historical study of a number of eschatological and oracular texts in the Hebrew Bible, he goes on to discuss texts from the Dead Sea Scrolls, the New Testament, biblical pseudepigrapha and Apocrypha, and Patristic writings. The study reveals an anti-messianic tradition involving a variety of eschatological antagonists in conflict with diverse messianic actors that stretches across both Jewish and Christian corpora and revolves around a set of similar motifs, ideas, and core Biblical texts.

InhaltsübersichtMichaela Bauks: The Study of Pain in Historical Anthropology − Saul M. The essays engage the subject of pain and its representation in a multitude of ways, including consideration of the representation of physical pain, of psychological anguish, and the often complex relationship between the two. Several essays focus on the representation of pain in a particular genre of ancient literature such as Greek medical texts, narratives, prophetic texts, poetry, or legal texts. The volume also explores descriptions of concrete pain and the metaphorical use of pain imagery and idioms, as well as pain's relationship to shame, illness and torture. Finally, both communal and individual dimensions of pain are of interest to the contributors, as is the role pain might have had in ritual action and the part rites might play in the imposition of pain.Survey of contentsMichaela Bauks: The Study of Pain in Historical Anthropology − Saul M.
