    In this interdisciplinary symposium the thematic complex of Jewry and Judaism, anti-Semitism and German literature is presented and discussed from many different complementary aspects. The volume includes studies of direct statements on the subject by Jewish and non-Jewish authors as well as the indirect expression of 'Jewish' themes in entire genres (popular drama and popular novel, popular religious literature) and periods of literary history (Pietism, the Enlightenment, Weimar Classicism, Romanticism, the Vormärz). In each case the individual aspects are seen in reference to the overall context of the emancipation debate - including the discussion within the Jewish community as well as the diametrically opposed anti-Jewish discussion. Der Themenkomplex Judentum, Antisemitismus und deutschsprachige Literatur wird in diesem interdisziplinären Symposion von verschiedensten Seiten her dargestellt und diskutiert, wobei sich die methodischen und inhaltlichen Perspektiven ergänzen. Untersucht werden die Stellungnahmen jüdischer wie nichtjüdischer Autoren ebenso wie der Niederschlag 'jüdischer' Thematik in ganzen Genres (populäres Drama, populärer Roman, religiöse Volksliteratur) und epochalen Strömungen (Pietismus, Aufklärung, Klassik, Romantik, Vormärz).     Das Buch befragt die deutsche Literatur- und Geistesgeschichte nach der Verdrängung der jüdischen Tradition und markiert die Lücken, die durch die Vertreibung der geistigen Repräsentanten des Judentums aus dem deutschen Sprachraum gerissen worden sind. Als in Deutschland gegen Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts uneingeschränkte Bewunderung für das antike Griechentum aufkam, wurde gleichzeitig das sich gerade der europäischen Aufklärung öffnende Judentum auf dem Schauplatz der Religionskritik vehement bekämpft. In diesem Kontext ist der aggressive Antijudaismus zu verstehen, mit dem sich Goethe und Schiller gegen die Sinai-Offenbarung und deren legendären Mittler Moses wandten. Beginnend mit Winckelmann hat die deutsche Klassik einen neuen Legitimationsdiskurs geschaffen, der unter Rückgriff auf den antiken Polytheismus das ‚produktive Individuum‘ und die ‚wachsende Natur‘ zu seinen zentralen Kategorien machte und damit den geltenden Monotheismus zu verdrängen suchte. Im Gegensatz dazu suchten Mendelssohn und Heine die Position einer deutsch-jüdischen Moderne zu etablieren. Das Buch verfolgt, wie der ‚Weltanschauungskampf‘ gegen den Monotheismus zum ‚völkischen‘ Antisemitismus des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts führte und in der Shoa mündete, was die Verdrängung der jüdischen Tradition aus dem kulturellen Gedächtnis der Deutschen zur Folge hatte.

Dies war das zentrale Thema eines Kolloquiums in Konstanz (Mai 2000), dessen Ergebnisse hier vorgestellt werden. An dem Kolloquium nahmen Anthropologen, Historiker und Literaturwissenschaftler teil. Diese interdisziplinäre Annäherung konzentrierte sich auf die Faktoren, Räume, Zahlen und Stimmen, die in den antijüdischen (und damit antisemitischen) Diskurs involviert waren, sowohl in ihrem historischen Kontext als auch in ihrer literarischen Darstellung. Bei dem letzten Thema ist dem apologetischen Aspekt ebensoviel Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet worden wie dem kritischen. What development did anti-Semitism take in Spain when, after the Banishment Edict (1492), the country was no longer a locus of co-existence for different ethnic groups? This was the topic central to the colloquium in Konstanz (May 2000), the results of which are presented here. The colloquium united anthropologists, historians and literary scholars. This interdisciplinary approach focused on the factors, spaces, figures and voices involved in anti-Jewish (and hence anti-Semitic) discourse, both in their historical context and in their literary representation. On the latter issue, as much attention is given to the apologetic as to the critical aspect.

    England during the Middle Ages was at the forefront of European antisemitism. It was in medieval Norwich that the notorious "blood libel" was first introduced when a resident accused the city's Jewish leaders of abducting and ritually murdering a local boy. England also enforced legislation demanding that Jews wear a badge of infamy, and in 1290, it became the first European nation to expel forcibly all of its Jewish residents. In The Accommodated Jew, Kathy Lavezzo rethinks the complex and contradictory relation between England’s rejection of “the Jew” and the centrality of Jews to classic English literature. Drawing on literary, historical, and cartographic texts, she charts an entangled Jewish imaginative presence in English culture. In a sweeping view that extends from the Anglo-Saxon period to the late seventeenth century, Lavezzo tracks how English writers from Bede to Milton imagine Jews via buildings—tombs, latrines and especially houses—that support fantasies of exile. Epitomizing this trope is the blood libel and its implication that Jews cannot be accommodated in England because of the anti-Christian violence they allegedly perform in their homes. In the Croxton Play of the Sacrament, Marlowe’s The Jew of Malta, and Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, the Jewish house not only serves as a lethal trap but also as the site of an emerging bourgeoisie incompatible with Christian pieties. Lavezzo reveals the central place of “the Jew” in the slow process by which a Christian “nation of shopkeepers” negotiated their relationship to the urban capitalist sensibility they came to embrace and embody. In the book’s epilogue, she advances her inquiry into Victorian England and the relationship between Charles Dickens (whose Fagin is the second most infamous Jew in English literature after Shylock) and the Jewish couple that purchased his London home, Tavistock House, showing how far relations between gentiles and Jews in England had (and had not) evolved.
