The book is a rare case study of the dynamics, processes and shifts around the creation and reading of one of the world’s major monuments, through all the processes of its design and making. The frieze which represents the Great Trek and Voortrekker occupation of South Africa (1835-52) is one of the largest of its kind. The key question is how, a century later, were eighteen years of Voortrekker memory transformed into a 92-metre marble frieze?

Chr.

This book discusses the 3rd–11th century developments that led to the formation of the three Scandinavian kingdoms in the Viking Age. Wide-ranging studies of communication routes, regional identities, judicial territories, and royal sites and graves trace a complex trajectory of rulership in these pagan Germanic societies. In the final section, new light is shed on the pinnacle and demise of the Norwegian kingdom in the 13th–14th centuries.

The volume, which has emerged from an international conference of the same title, unites a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary contributions on invasions of Goths and other Germanic tribes into the Roman Empire, focusing primarily on the third-century CE. The newly discovered fragments of the lost work Scythica by the third-century historian Dexippus of Athens, the so-called Scythica Vindobonensia alias Dexippus Vindobonensis, which survived in a Greek palimpsest kept in the Austrian National Library in Vienna, have great impact on the study of this field. The contributions explore the Vienna fragments in their historical and historiographical contexts, from the Roman to the Byzantine Era, and the history of the invasions themselves.

How does language work? How does language produce truth and beauty? Eleventh-century Arabic scholarship has detailed answers to these universal questions. Language Between God and the Poets reads the theory of four major scholars and asks how the conceptual vocabulary they shared enabled them to create theory in lexicography, theology, logic, and poetics. Their ideas engaged God and poetry at the nexus of language, mind, and reality. Their core conceptual vocabulary carved reality at the joints in a manner quite different from Anglophone and European thought in any period. This vocabulary centered around the words maʿnā (“mental content”) and ḥaqīqah (“accuracy”), two concepts for which Alexander Key develops a translation methodology with the help of Wittgenstein and Kuhn. Language Between God and the Poets helps us see how fundamental the lexicon and lexicography can be to all kinds of theory, how theology can be a science of naming, how logic interacts with language, and how poetic affect can be built on grammar and logic. The four scholars are ar-Rāġib al-Iṣfahānī, Ibn Fūrak, Ibn Sīnā (Avicenna), and ʿAbd al-Qāhir al-Ǧurǧānī.

A building erected north of the Ephesus state market in the final decade before Christ is today one of the few prytaneia that have been identified with certainty in the Greek-Roman world. A prytaneion was the main cult building of the polis; it functioned as the official seat of the city’s highest municipal authorities, with public cenotaphs and the site of the so-called state fire. It was possible to clarify, for the most part, the history of its construction, as well as the function and the structure of the site, but also the transformation process of this ancient monumental building.

In studies of the Roman elite, scholars have focused on their intensive and restricted commitment to political and military achievement. This book critically considers the lasting exclusivity of this way of life, widening the scope of inquiry to demonstrate how the aristocratic environment also integrated literary pursuits, artistic production and pervasive luxury consumption.

Highlights the important contribution Stoic philosophy made to aesthetics

Shows that this is a largely unexplored area of interest to scholars of both ancient philosophy and aesthetics

Analyses material to show that there is a coherent and substantial attempt at systematic enquiry into aesthetic phenomena

Discusses how Stoic ideas could enhance our understanding of ancient aesthetics and even contribute to contemporary aesthetics

Aistė Čelkytė shows us that Stoic views about beauty were substantial and compelling. She examines the ways in which the Stoics used aesthetic vocabulary in their arguments to demonstrate that aesthetic concepts played an important role in their philosophy.

Čelkytė argues that understanding the Stoic’s aesthetic views allows us to interpret their famous account of virtue more thoroughly. She also explores the place that Stoic aesthetics has within the broader ancient Greek and Roman tradition, highlighting the value of incorporating Stoic views in the discussions of aesthetic properties and values.

We are surrounded by complex things that affect us but which remain concealed behind interfaces. Examples of such black boxes are diverse: smart watches, artificial intelligence, complex software, and gene-editing technology. This interdisciplinary volume explores case examples of black boxes using theoretical analytic tools, looks at the ways they are sealed, and presents attempts to disclose their contents.

Contributions not only focus on the discovery of the papyrus roll, but also offer a broader view on early-imperial Roman historiography, to which the new perspectives opened by the rediscovery of Seneca the Elder’s Historiae greatly contribute.

Using a range of materials including the Bible, Greek epic, Beowulf, Old Norse and Old English riddles, and medieval music, the contributors collectively work to refine, challenge, and further advance contemporary Oral Theory, an interdisciplinary school of thought heavily influenced by John Miles Foley, whose work provides the jumping-off point for this volume. The book includes a useful introduction to the history of oral theory and Foley’s ground-breaking and influential work.

The book explores the significance of that work for the generations of historians and other authors in the Hellenistic age (323-31 BC). It is the first monograph that fully treats the question of the fate of the History in the Hellenistic world.

The book collects and analyses for the first time all the fragmentary evidence on Thucydides’ readership from the Classical and the Hellenistic period. It includes a thorough and up-to-date synoptic introduction and extensive bibliography, setting each chapter in the context of broader scholarship from XIXth century onwards.. With this book, readers shall receive a survey of manifold aspects of Thucydides in particular, and of historical writing in the Hellenistic age in general.

The period from the 5th to the 7th century AD was characterised by far-reaching structural changes that affected the entire west of the Roman Empire. This process used to be regarded by scholars aspart of the dissolution of Roman order, but in current discussions it is nowexamined more critically. The contributions to this volume of conference papers combine approaches from history and literature studies in order to review the changing forms and fields of the establishment of collective identities, and to analyse them in their mutual relationships.

Ancient Greek history holds a special place in the works of many 19th-c. writers. The same goes for Cyprian Norwid, one of the most eminent poets in the history of Polish literature, a thinker, and an artist. This book scrutinizes Norwid’s fascination with Greek history and culture, especially his peculiar synthesis of Greek thought and Christianity. It focuses on the key themes of the relationship of Platonism with early Christian writings and their presence in Norwid’s contemporary culture, the opposition of memory and history in 19th-c. literature and social life, and the image of the artist and its influence on social life in modern everyday. The book analyzes Norwid’s oeuvre in a broad comparison with representatives of French, German, and British literature and the humanities.

Lucan`s Bellum Civile (Pharsalia) is traditionally read as a political critique of the Principate. However, several features of this text run counter to this interpretation. This study reexamines Lucan`s work using the model of the unreliable narrator to illuminate its portrayal of contradictory structures in Nero`s Principate. The interdisciplinary approach offers a new perspective on Lucan`s epic poem and its historical importance.

Ammianus is regarded as the greatest historian of late antiquity. Yet his geographic and ethnographic digressions were long underestimated as examples offeigned eruditionand as undue interruptions to the historical narrative. The author of this volume believes that the key to understanding Ammianus`s work as a whole lies in his teaching of classical rhetoric, his metaphoric reading of landscapes, and the creation of spaces for memory and counterworlds to the Imperium Romanum. In this way, historical understanding and digressions concerning geographic knowledge must be viewed as interdependent features of the text. The author thus casts a new light on Ammianus`s literary achievements.

This volume covers the transition period stretching from the reign of Justinian I to the end of the 8th century, focusing on the experience of individuals who lived through the last decades of Byzantine rule in Egypt before the arrival of the new Arab rulers. The contributions drawing from the wealth of sources we have for Egypt, explore phenomena of stability and disruption during the transition from the classical to the postclassical world.

This volume provides an ambitious synopsis of the complex, colourful world of textiles in ancient Mediterranean iconography. A wealth of information on ancient textiles is available from depictions such as sculpture, vase painting, figurines, reliefs and mosaics. Commonly represented in clothing, textiles are also present in furnishings and through the processes of textile production. The challenge for anyone analysing ancient iconography is determining how we interpret what we see. As preserved textiles rarely survive in comparable forms, we must consider the extent to which representations of textiles reflect reality, and critically evaluate the sources. Images are not simple replicas or photographs of reality. Instead, iconography draws on select elements from the surrounding world that were recognisable to the ancient audience, and reveal the perceptions, ideologies, and ideas of the society in which they were produced. Through examining the durable evidence, this anthology reveals the ephemeral world of textiles and their integral role in the daily life, cult and economy of the ancient Mediterranean.
