    Why did human beings first begin to write history? Lisa Irene Hau argues that a driving force among Greek historians was the desire to use the past to teach lessons about the present and for the future. She uncovers the moral messages of the ancient Greek writers of history and the techniques they used to bring them across. Hau also shows how moral didacticism was an integral part of the writing of history from its inception in the 5th century BC, how it developed over the next 500 years in parallel with the development of historiography as a genre and how the moral messages on display remained surprisingly stable across this period.

     

     

    For the ancient Greek historiographers, moral didacticism was a way of making sense of the past and making it relevant to the present; but this does not mean that they falsified events: truth and morality were compatible and synergistic ends.

    Überlieferte Originalstelen mit Inschriften der großen Könige Sargon und Narām-Sîn von Akkade, die im 23. Jahrhundert v. Chr. als erste ein Weltreich eroberten, sowie mündlich tradierte Sagen haben diesen beiden Königen einen herausragenden Stellenwert in der historischen Erinnerung der Babylonier und Assyrer verschafft. Dies führte zu einer Reihe erzählender Werke, die zum Teil wie echte Heldenlieder gestaltet sind, zum Teil sich aber auch als authentische Königsinschriften gebärden. Das Verständnis dieser heterogenen Textgruppe in verschiedenen Fragerichtungen zu erhellen, ist das Ziel vorliegender Studie. Zu den Fragestellungen gehören die Bestimmung der Gattungen, denen die Texte angehören, und ihre Scheidung von den authentischen Königsinschriften, die durch das Merkmal der Fiktionalität gekennzeichnet ist. Des Weiteren soll die zum Teil hohe literarische Qualität dieser Werke herausgearbeitet werden. Schließlich wird untersucht, inwiefern sich an diesen Werken die Mechanismen und Bedingungen ihrer Überlieferung ablesen lassen, ob sie Spuren eines mündlichen Sargon- und Narām-Sîn-Sagenschatzes aufweisen und welche literarischen Funktionen sie erfüllten. Die Reihe “Göttinger Beiträge zun Alten Orient” setzt die erfolgreichen “Göttinger Arbeitshefte zur Altorientalischen Literatur” fort. Die Reihe wird vom Seminar für Altorientalistik der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen herausgegeben und behandelt die Erschließung und Deutung der reichhaltigen Schriftdenkmäler in akkadischer oder sumerischer Sprache aus der Zeit von ca. 3100 - 500 v. Chr.

Die thematische Spannweite der einzelnen Beiträge reicht in diesem Band geographisch von der eurasischen Seidenstraße bis zu dem prominenten Kampfplatz von Kalkriese (mit Spuren einer römisch-germanischen Auseinandersetzung in der augusteischen Ära) und chronologisch von den Zeiten des bronzezeitlichen Westkleinasien und des hethitischen Großreiches bis zur Rezeptionsgeschichte der „klassischen Antike“ im 18.     The Medicamina Faciei Femineae is a didactic elegy which showcases an early example of Ovid's trademark combination of a moralistic, instructive form and trivial subject and meter. Exploring female beauty and cosmetics, with particular emphasis on the concept of ‘cultus', the poem also presents five practical recipes for cosmetic treatments used by Roman women. Covering both didactic parody and pharmacological reality, this deceptively complex poem possesses wit, vivacity and importance. The first full study devoted to this little-researched but multi-faceted poem, Ovid on Cosmetics includes an in-depth introduction which situates the poem within its literary heritage of didactic and elegiac poetry, its place in Ovid's oeuvre and its relevance to social values, personal aesthetics and attitudes to female beauty in Roman society.

    Religious studies have long discussed the comparative notion of »holy« beyond religious, cultural, and linguistic boundaries. In this book, Thomas Jurczyk conducts a diachronic comparison of the meaning and application of two notions and their related word fields that are commonly associated with a broader comparative notion of holy, namely the Ancient Armenian term »surb« and its related words and the English word field associated with »holy«. To compare these two semantic fields, his methodological approach operates on the principle of distributional semantics and applies, among others, tools and methods from the field of corpus linguistics.

    The papers and videos presented here are the result of the international conference 'Teaching Classics in the Digital Age' held online on the 15 and 16 June 2020. As digital media provide new possibilities for teaching and outreach in Classics, the conference 'Teaching Classics in the Digital Age' aimed at presenting current approaches to digital teaching and sharing best practices by bringing together different projects and practitioners from all fields of Classics (including Classical Archaeology, Greek and Latin Studies and Ancient History). Furthermore, it aimed at starting a discussion about principles, problems and the future of teaching Classics in the 21st century within and beyond its single fields.

    Ist Schrift immer nur als Herrschaftsinstrument zu betrachten, so wie es Schriftwissenschaft, Ethnologie und Universalgeschichte behaupten? Vom antiken Scherbengericht bis zur Samisdat-Presse konnte Schrift auch der Bestreitung oder Einhegung der Herrschaft dienen. Während Herrschenden-Apotheosen Maßstäbe setzen, an denen real Herrschende scheitern können, zeigen uns Chroniken, wie umkämpft jede Macht ist. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes zeigen, dass es bei der Instrumentalisierung von Schrift auf die Trägergruppen der Schriftlichkeit, auf Genres und die kulturelle Einbettung ankommt. Anhand von Beispielen, die von der Antike bis in die Zeitgeschichte reichen, beleuchten sie das prekäre Verhältnis zwischen Literalität und Macht.
