Während sich die Vorstellung der Altersweisheit in der antiken Literatur als stabil und variabel zugleich erwies, blieb deren systematische Untersuchung in der Forschung bisher lückenhaft. Die Dissertation gibt nicht nur einen Überblick über die Bedeutungsnuancen der antiken Weisheitsvorstellung und die variablen Altersbilder, sondern beschäftigt sich besonders mit der Frage, inwiefern die spätantiken Bischöfe Ambrosius und Paulinus pagane und biblische Traditionen zur Vorstellung der Altersweisheit aufgreifen und zu christlichen Konzepten umarbeiten. Mögliche Kontinuitäten, Modifikationen und Neuerungen im Umgang mit den tradierten Motiven werden so als spezifisch spätantik-christlich eruiert. Beide Bischöfe trugen zur Etablierung der christianisierten Verknüpfung von sapientia und senectus bei, sodass die Konstruktion der Altersweisheit auch in der Spätantike zu einem Stück antiker Geistesgeschichte wurde, anhand derer sich gesellschaftliche und sprachliche, philosophische und religiöse Konventionen, Strömungen und Wandlungen nachzeichnen lassen Old age and wisdom have been closely linked since the beginnings of human culture and theological-philosophical reflection. The volume details ancient notions about the wisdom of age and also identifies specific Christian nuances from late antiquity. The notion of the wisdom of old age also serves as a reflection of the philosophical-religious discourse of late-antiquity Christians in relating to pagan traditions

    This article deals with the manuscript tradition of Ambrose's De bono mortis. On the one hand, a list of the manuscripts that we know of so far, dating from the 8th to the 12th century, is provided. On the other hand, some remarks on various issues which are of interest in view of a new recensio and collatio of the manuscripts are presented: the two main corpora in which the De bono mortis is often included, and their origin and circulation up to the 12th century; the relationship between the contents of the manuscripts and their being assignable to different branches of the stemma codicum; the structure of the stemma itself. Cet article traite de la tradition manuscrite du De bono mortis d’Ambroise. D'une part, il dresse une liste des manuscrits connus à ce jour, du viiie au xiie siècle. D'autre part, il présente quelques observations sur diverses questions qui présentent un intérêt en vue de nouvelles recensio et collatio des manuscrits: les deux corpora dans lesquels le De bono mortis est souvent transmis, et leur origine et leur circulation jusqu’au xiie siècle ; la relation entre le contenu des manuscrits et leur répartition entre les différentes branches du stemma codicum; la structure du stemma.

This brief treatise of 85 paragraphs, the De Helia et ieiunio, has kept several traces of the homilies which were used for its composition, but it is characterized by an important effort of literary writing: the eloquence and the obvious signs of literarity that it displays endow it with originality and allow us to understand better Ambrose’s process of writing.
