The King Arthur we imagine did not exist in history. He is the result of stories told and retold, changed and added to by storytellers for centuries, each making the story reflect the storyteller's time and values. The chapters in this book look at movies, manga, comic books, a television show, and traditional books released since 1960 to explore some of the ways King Arthur has been reimagined in the past 60 years. Interpreting Avalon High and The Kid Who Would Be King, Camelot 3000 and King Arthur vs. Dracula, Fate/Zero, John Steinbeck's The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights, the influence of Arthurian legend on Harry Potter, Terry Gilliam's The Fisher King, John Boorman's Excalibur, Jerry Zucker's First Knight, Antoine Fuqua's King Arthur, Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword, Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Secret Service, Iris Murdoch's The Time of the Angels, and the BBC series Merlin, the authors find that while we are still interested in the idea of King Arthur, we may also want his story to be more racially and gender inclusive, less elitist, and in some cases, more secular

This major interdisciplinary collection captures the vitality and increasingly global significance of the Faust figure in literature, theatre and music. Bringing together scholars from around the world, International Faust Studies examines questions of adaptation, reception and translation centering on Faust discourse in a diversity of cultural contexts, including the Chinese, Japanese, Indian, African, Brazilian and Canadian, as well as the European, British and American. It broadens the field by including studies of lesser known or neglected Faust discourse, including the translation of Goet

"Shakespeare and Canada: Remembrance of Ourselves captures the state of Canadian scholarship on Shakespeare at a pivotal historical moment, when events around the world are commemorating the four-hundredth anniversary of Shakespeare's death and the beginning of his remarkable afterlife. Covering the Stratford Festival, the cult CBC television program Slings and Arrows, major Canadian critics such as Northrop Frye and Marshall McLuhan, the influential acting teacher Neil Freiman, the rise of Quebecois and First Nation approaches to Shakespeare, and Shakespeare's place in secondary schools today, this collection reflects the diversity and energy of that afterlife in Canada. Collectively, they suggest that Shakespeare continues to offer Canadians "remembrance of ourselves." While the essays in this volume are about diverse topics, together they reflect the state of Shakespeare's reception, performance, and reputation in Canada. The individual stories Canadians tell about Shakespeare, Daniel Fischlin reminds us in the closing essay, are always, but never only, about ourselves."-- Race, National Identity, and the Hauntological Ethics of Slings & ArrowsPerforming "Indigenous Shakespeare" in Canada: The Tempest and The Death of a Chief; Shakespeare, a Late Bloomer on the Quebec Stage; Mediatic Shakespeare: McLuhan and the Bard; Shakespeare and the "Cultural Lag" of Canadian Stratford in Alice Munro's "Tricks"; Beyond (or Beneath) the Folio: Neil Freeman's Shakespearean Acting Pedagogy in Context; Rhyme and Reason: Shakespeare's Exceptional Status and Role in Canadian Education; The Truth About Stories About Shakespeare ... This book investigates how two leading Sicilian authors, Giovanni Verga (1840-1922) and Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936), transposed their short stories to the stage. Their leading female characters, gaining voices of their own, can be seen as 'new' women--a phrase recalling Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House (1879). In uncovering these voices, De Francisci draws attention to the actresses performing them, namely Eleonora Duse (1858-1924) and Marta Abba (1900-1988). In giving a physical reality to characters otherwise existing only on paper, they became not only performers of Verga and Pirandello but also influences upon them. By tracing the evolution of these female characters, both on page and in the theatre, De Francisci offers new insights into why the narrative genre is so well suited to Verga's preoccupations, why the theatrical form is more effective in articulating Pirandello's umorismo, and what Pirandello's adaptations reveal about the way in which he comes to negotiate the transition from Realism (or verismo) to Modernism--back cover
