    Die Ursachen von Klimawandel und Artenschwund wurzeln u. a. in kulturellen Gewohnheiten und ästhetischen Vorstellungen, die jahrhundertelang nicht infrage gestellt wurden. Diese zu identifizieren und zu hinterfragen trägt dazu bei, die Welt vor Kulturpraktiken zu warnen, welche auf eine planetarische Katastrophe zusteuern. Die vorliegende Einführung in den Anthropozän-Diskurs taucht in die Kulturgeschichte der Ökologie ein und fragt sowohl nach der, bisher in Fachkreisen wenig beachteten, Erfindung der Natur in Wort und Bild, als auch nach dem Menschen (Anthropos), der die ökologische Frage stellt. Kolonialkritik, neumaterialistisches Denken und die Rolle ökokritischer Bildanalysen stehen dabei im Mittelpunkt. Mit einem Geleitwort von Prof. Dr. Oliver Jehle. The causes of climate change and biodiversity loss are rooted in cultural habits and aesthetics that have not been challenged for centuries. Identifying and challenging them will help to warn the world about cultural practices that may be leading to planetary catastrophe. This introduction to Anthropocene discourse delves into the cultural history of ecology, asking both about the invention of nature in words and images and about the human being (Anthropos) who poses ecological questions. A critique of colonialism, neo-materialist thinking and the role of ecocritical image analysis are central to an examination of these issues. With a foreword by Prof. Dr. Oliver Jehle.

Dieses Buch präsentiert Analysen und Fallstudien, welche die Funktion und Bedeutung von Natur im Prozess der Modernisierung an der Epochenschwelle 1900 neu erschließen.Im transnationalen, nordeuropäischen Vergleich widmen sich die Beiträge den medialen Repräsentationen von Natur (in Literatur, Philosophie, Film, Foto) ebenso wie der Kolonisierung des Raumes (in Tourismus, Reisen, Sport, Natur- und Heimatschutz). Der Band bietet damit auch Impulse für die neuen theoretisch-methodischen Ansätze der Ökokritik und der Raumsoziologie Current ecological and environmental problems put the concept of nature more and more into the center of debates. This book presents analyses and case studies that explore the function and meaning of nature within the process of modernization at the epochal threshold of 1900 anew. In a trans-national, Northern European comparison, the contributions address the medial representations of nature (in literature, philosophy, film, photography) as well as the colonization of space (in tourism, travels, sports, environmental and cultural heritage protection). Thus, this volume also offers stimuli for the new theoretical-methodical approaches of eco-criticism and spatial sociology

    Over the past roughly two decades, the interconnected concepts of reparation, restitution, and commemorative culture have gained renewed momentum - in academic discourse as much as in activist, artistic, and political contexts. This development insists on a critique of the material and systemic conditions of societies and global relations. In their 2018 report on the restitution of looted cultural artifacts, for example, Bénédicte Savoy and Felwine Sarr discuss restitutions in the light of a new ethics of relations. Individual acts of restitution, but also the processes of material and immaterial reparation that go with them, are viewed as mediators in the by definition irreparable legacy of colonialism and its present repercussions. A new ethics of relations might even go beyond anthropocentrism: The destruction of nature in the Anthropocene and the destruction of humanity that is colonialism both require a fundamental questioning of the premises of western modernity and a radically different relationship to the world. The present volume aims to examine different discourses and practices of reparation, bringing together perspectives from cultural studies, memory studies, post- or decolonial studies as well as literary studies. Chapters from these disciplines are complemented by contributions from the fields of philosophy, art, and literature in order to explore the multiple facets of reparation.     Peter Krieger entwirft in diesem Buch eine politische Ikonographie des Anthropozäns: Er zeigt, wie man mit Hilfe einer optischen Forensik, einer ideengeschichtlichen Erkundung und einer bildwissenschaftlichen Interpretation versteht, was Menschen dazu veranlasst, wilde Natur als Müllabladeplatz zu missbrauchen. Seine mikrohistorische Studie eines abfallverseuchten Naturschutzgebietes in Mexiko-Stadt zeigt exemplarisch auf, wie Müll zu einer neuen geologischen Schicht des Anthropozäns geworden ist. His micro-historical study of a waste-contaminated nature reserve in Mexico City exemplifies how waste has become a new geological layer of the Anthropocene. Dieses Buch präsentiert Analysen und Fallstudien, welche die Funktion und Bedeutung von Natur im Prozess der Modernisierung an der Epochenschwelle 1900 neu erschließen.Im transnationalen, nordeuropäischen Vergleich widmen sich die Beiträge den medialen Repräsentationen von Natur (in Literatur, Philosophie, Film, Foto) ebenso wie der Kolonisierung des Raumes (in Tourismus, Reisen, Sport, Natur- und Heimatschutz). Der Band bietet damit auch Impulse für die neuen theoretisch-methodischen Ansätze der Ökokritik und der Raumsoziologie. Current ecological and environmental problems put the concept of nature more and more into the center of debates. This book presents analyses and case studies that explore the function and meaning of nature within the process of modernization at the epochal threshold of 1900 anew. In a trans-national, Northern European comparison, the contributions address the medial representations of nature (in literature, philosophy, film, photography) as well as the colonization of space (in tourism, travels, sports, environmental and cultural heritage protection). Thus, this volume also offers stimuli for the new theoretical-methodical approaches of eco-criticism and spatial sociology.
