    Abstract: "Seit den neunziger Jahren kam es aufgrund technologischer, organisatorischer und umweltbedingter Entwicklungen im Fahrzeugbau zu einer außergewöhnlichen Kumulierung von Reaktionen und Innovationsanstößen, die seit Mitte der neunziger Jahre Strukturen und Prozesse dieser bedeutenden Industrie grundlegend verändern. Gegenüber bisherigen evolutorischen Entwicklungslinien ist diese Phase eher von Strukturbrüchen und Diskontinuitäten gekennzeichnet. Diese Umbruchphase vollzieht sich am Anfang des neuen Jahrtausends mit weiterhin hoher Veränderungsdynamik. Innovatorische Konzepte, die nahezu alle Bereiche des Automobils betreffen, bilden eine wesentliche Triebkraft dieser Entwicklung. Dies betrifft die Einführung neuer Technologien (Elektronik, neue Werkstoffe, neue Antriebssysteme) ebenso wie Produktkonzepte (Module/ Plattformen) und Produktionskonzepte (Fraktalisierung, Teamkonzepte).     Abstract: In 'Keeping autonomous driving alive', the author studies the relationships between researchers and artefacts held together by contested visions. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in a pioneering research project in Germany, he argues we can make sense of technological visions only if we simultaneously grasp the role of care, gender, and narrative in sustaining technological research. Instead of focusing on the genesis and expansion of sociotechnical assemblages, the book offers a radically new alternative to the study of visions. Building on literature from Science & Technology Studies, Science Communication, and Gender Studies, Göde Both investigates the ambivalence and fragility of technological visions, video demonstrations, and street trials in the hands of researchers invested in self-driving cars.     Abstract: Historical research on World War II and the impact of large-scale violence largely depends on the availability of source materials: diaries, newspapers, eyewitness accounts, archival documents, photographs and videos, etc. Currently, these resources are held by a large number of memory institutions, often in analogue formats. For scholars, it can be challenging to find out which collections are relevant for their research and also what information can be found in these collections. In this article it is argued that Semantic Web technologies, together with new digital tooling to automatically open up collections and interlink their contents, have the potential to revolutionize future access and use. By making the contents of collections machine-readable and enriching them with links to reference data, a shift can be made from a "web of documents" to a "web of data." An kommunizierenden Maschinen zei­gen sich kontroverse Deutungen von Autonomie, Kreativität, Komple­xität und Opazität von Mensch und Maschine wie in einem Brennglas.     Abstract: The present paper intends to explore Gibson's Neuromancer (1984) with a critical eye on the changes and influences technology has effected in contemporary societies, to elucidate how and in which ways these impacts have brought about changes in both individuals’ roles and attitudes, and to investigate the different realms influenced by technology. Hence, in the introduction section, some terms associated with Neuromncer will be first defined and expounded, and then in the discussion, the focus of the current research will be on the above-mentioned work in order to shed light on the main concerns of the book. At the end, a conclusion based upon the points discussed in the preceding sections will be drawn in order to help readers of Gibson's appreciate the significance of his work in portraying the ramifications of advanced technology in years to come

Debord presents the society of Spectacle as a mere representation of seemingly real images which is used by the capital for its own good. Spectacle consists of images such as games, entertainments or television shows which are political tools in the hands of the Capitol to stabilize its power. In fact, by applying these images through different exciting entertainments and shows, the Capitol disperses people more and destroys their unity so that people cannot be united to rebel against the Capitol’s power. This paper tries to apply the theory of spectacle to Suzanne Collin's Hunger Games and as the title of the novel is very telling of itself, it revolves around the annual event of Hunger Games connoting the starvation of the poor people in the twelve districts and the Capitol.     Abstract: "Auf der Basis einer empirischen Untersuchung mit Schweizer Jugendlichen befasst sich der Aufsatz mit dem audiovisuellen Artefakt 'Handyfilm' und den mit seiner Herstellung, Verbreitung, Archivierung und Rezeption verknüpften sozialen Praktiken. Aufgezeigt wird, wie diese Praktiken sowohl mit der Kameratechnik des Handys als auch mit ästhetischen und formalen Aspekten von Handyfilmen verknüpft werden und wie sich jugendliche Akteure durch das Filmen und Gefilmt-Werden populär- und jugendkulturelle Diskurse aneignen und für ihr Identitätsmanagement fruchtbar machen. Handyfilme werden dazu historisch kontextualisiert und aus der Perspektive einer medienweltlichen Ethnografie interpretiert: Als integraler Bestandteil einer subjektivierten Dokumentation des Alltags und alltäglicher Kommunikation, die - so die These - sowohl Alltage konstituieren als auch als Instrument zur Alltagsbewältigung dienen." Surprisingly, the troubles with, and the costs of, deficiencies, accidents, data crimes, terroristic acts or catastrophic events, have not been reduced. On the contrary, the objective scope of risk and the subjective sense of insecurity seem to have increased. The contribution provides an answer to the question of why increasing technologies of safety does not automatically lead to an increased safety. As far as the social practices and processes of designing and instituting new technologies are concerned, this contribution argues further that a) the belief in 'ruly technology' b) the under-estimation of unplanned interference

    Abstract: Be it in the case of opening a website, sending an email, or high-frequency trading, bits and bytes of information have to cross numerous nodes at which micro-decisions are made. These decisions concern the most efficient path through the network, the processing speed, or the priority of incoming data packets. Despite their multifaceted nature, micro-decisions are a dimension of control and surveillance in the twenty-first century that has received little critical attention. They represent the smallest unit and the technical precondition of a contemporary network politics - and of our potential opposition to it. The current debates regarding net neutrality and Edward Snowden’s revelation of NSA surveillance are only the tip of the iceberg. What is at stake is nothing less than the future of the Internet as we know it

    Abstract: Ob beim Aufrufen einer Webseite, beim Versenden einer E-Mail oder beim Hochfrequenzhandel an der Börse: Auf ihrem Weg durch die Weiten digitaler Netze durchqueren Bits zahlreiche Knoten, an denen eine Reihe von Mikroentscheidungen getroffen werden. Diese Entscheidungen betreffen den besten Pfad zum Ziel, die Verarbeitungsgeschwindigkeit oder die Priorität zwischen den ankommenden Paketen. In ihrer vielschichtigen Gestalt bilden solche Mikroentscheidungen eine bislang nur marginal beachtete Dimension von Kontrolle und Überwachung im 21. Jahrhundert. Sie sind sowohl die kleinste Einheit als auch die technische Voraussetzung einer gegenwärtigen Politik digitaler Netzwerke - und des Widerstands gegen sie. Die aktuellen Debatten um Netzneutralität und Edward Snowdens Enthüllung der NSA-Überwachung bilden dabei lediglich die Spitze des Eisbergs.     Abstract: Markets abound in media - but a media theory of markets is still emerging. Anthropology offers media archaeologies of markets, and the sociology of markets and finance unravels how contemporary financial markets have witnessed a media technological arms race. Building on such work, this volume brings together key thinkers of economic studies with German media theory, describes the central role of the media specificity of markets in new detail and inflects them in three distinct ways. Nik-Khah and Mirowski show how the denigration of human cognition and the concomitant faith in computation prevalent in contemporary market-design practices rely on neoliberal conceptions of information in markets. Schröter confronts the asymmetries and abstractions that characterize money as a medium and explores the absence of money in media.     Abstract: Der Aufstieg des Begriffs "Environment" zur Beschreibung der Gegenwart markiert den Einfluss, den das Nachdenken über Umgebungsrelationen und die Möglichkeit der technischen Gestaltung künstlicher Umgebungen seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts gewonnen haben. In geschlossenen artifiziellen Welten wie Raumstationen oder künstlichen Ökosystemen wird die Verschränkung des "Environments" mit den umgebenen Organismen zum Gegenstand einer Biopolitik, die heute in autonomen Technologien der Umgebungskontrolle neue Räume erschließt. Der Autor verfolgt diese Transformation ökologischen Umgebungswissens mit dem Ziel, gegenwärtige Technologien besser zu verstehen, den Begriff unselbstverständlich zu machen und die biopolitische Dimension jeder Ökologie herauszuarbeiten
