Abstract: In present-day South Africa, urban development agendas have inscribed doctrines of desirable and undesirable life in city spaces and the public that uses the space. This book studies the ways in which segregated city spaces, displacement of people from their homes, and criminalization practices are structured and executed. The author shows that these doctrines are being legitimized and legalized as part of a discursive practice and that the criminalization of lower-class members are part of that practice, not as random policing techniques of individual security forces, but as a technology of power that attends to the body, zooms in on it, screens it, and interrogates it

Abstract: This article rethinks contemporary approaches to asylum by examining literary accounts of human displacement to problematise representations and authenticity. A believable testimonial of asylum seekers' experience is key in the asylum application process and the pursuit of such truth by Europe's border forces usually entails a celebration of authenticity. Yet, the emphasis on migrant testimonials as the definitive source in understanding the migration 'crisis' is deeply problematic. This essay argues that literary representations of displacement are equally valuable in helping us understand contemporary migration. This paper engages with the poetry of two exiled poets, Warsan Shire and Yousif Qasmiyeh, to illustrate the importance of literary accounts of migration, and to demonstrate that the intimate and traumatic stories of the borderline condition should be shared on migrants’ own terms, not by the demands of the European border forces. Abstract: Was ist performative Bürgerschaft? Wie verändert die Idee und Praxis künstlerischer Forschung den Begriff von Bürgerschaft? Der Beitrag widmet sich dieser grundsätzlichen Fragestellung in der Kombination von künstlerischer Praxis mit Ansätzen aus der Migrationsforschung, der postkolonialen Theorie und politischen Philosophie und zeigt: ein performatives Verständnis von Bürgerschaft bietet einen gewinnbringenden Ansatz, um aktuelle Fragen von Flucht und Vertreibung, Migration und Integration, Bürgerrechte und Bürgerpflichten kritisch zu reflektieren. Das Verhältnis von Bürgerschaft und Performance wird am konkreten Beispiel des künstlerischen Forschungsprojekts Welcome City diskutiert. Abstract: Zugang zu Land ist begehrt und umkämpft. Das verdeutlichen Konflikte, die weltweit im Zusammenhang mit land grabbing auftreten. Wie aber lassen sich Entstehung und Verlauf dieser Konflikte erklären? Dieser Frage nähert sich die Autorin in einer Fallstudie zu zwei Konflikten um Zugang zu Land im Kontext der Umsetzung agrarindustrieller Vorhaben in Ghana. Aus machtkritischer Perspektive beleuchtet sie die Rolle traditioneller Autoritäten, die zentrale Akteur*innen in diesen Konflikten sind.
